  • An air spring was accepted for rail vehicle secondary suspension to reduce and absorb tile vibration and the noise. The air spring for the electric railway was developed with domestic technology, which consisted of a cord reinforced rubber bellows, a upper plate, a lower plate and a stopper rubber spring The fatigue test was conducted in laboratory by using servo hydraulic fatigue testing system to verify the durability. And to guarantee the adaptation of this air spring, the ride comfort and the air pressure variation were measured in train test on Boondang line.

  • The variation of the optical pass length between incident and reflective beam in a multilayer thin film reflection mirror is investigated. This variation is caused mainly by environmental parameters around the optical system, such as the air pressure, temperature, humidity and $CO_2$concentration. In this paper, a new method for measuring optical pass length variation is proposed. This optical pass length is measured against the above parameters by experiment. From the experimental results, it is clarified that the optical pass length is mostly effected by humidity changes.

  • A variable-flow-rate balancing valve has been developed and optimized to apply to a distributor in a hot-water heating system. Fluid dynamic performance of the system was evaluated by comparing the results with the previous pressure difference control valve (PDCV) system. In view of the variations of pressure drop and flow rate according to the sequential closing of the control valves, the present system which is named "smart system distributor", is very stable without a certain flow rate concentration. The level of pressure drop variation is also low as compared with the previous system with a PDCV. In view of the occurrence of cavitation, the present system is quite superior to the previous system because the instantaneous pressures at all sections are much higher than the vapor pressure. On the other hand, the previous system has a possibility of cavitation when one or more control valves are closed.

  • This paper deals with the effects of pulsating flow on volumetric efficiency, which may be generated during the gas exchange procedure, due to piston motion, valve event on intake and exhaust stroke and unsteady flow of turbocharger of a three-cylinder four stroke turbo-charged diesel engine. Consequently, volumetric efficiency affects significantly the engine performance; torque characteristics, fuel economy and further to emission and noise level. As the expansion ratio became larger the engine speed varies and torque increases, the pressure pulsation in an exhaust gas pipe acts as an increasing factor of intake air charging capacity totally. The phase and amplitude of pressure pulsation in the intake system only affects volumetric efficiency favorably, if it is well matched and tuned effectively to the engine. Thus, to verify the exact phase and amplitude of the pressure variation is the ultimate solution for the air-flow ratio assessment in the intake stroke. Some experimental results of pressure diagrams in the intake pipe and gas-flow of turbine in-outlet are presented, under various kinds of operating condition.

  • The process of energy separation in a low pressure vortex tube with compressed air as a working medium is studied in detail. Experimental data of the temperature of the cold and hot air leaving the vortex tube are presented. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the inner surface of a vortex tube and the temperature distribution in a vortex tube provide useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube Analysis of the results enabled to find the optimum ratio of nozzle area and the optimum shape of an orifice. From this optimum geometric setup of a low pressure and big vortex tube the effectiveness of energy separation was better than a high pressure and small vortex tube.

  • The water distribution system should be invariably operated on continuous pattern for 24 hours a day. Occasionally, it is not practically possible to operate for 24 hours due to water shortage or financial constraints. Therefore an intermittent water supply is unavoidable in water shortage area and developing countries. But the intermittent water supply can introduce large pressure forces and rapid fluid accelerations into a water supply network. These disturbances may result in new pipe failure, leakage and secondary contamination. This paper proposed an improvement methodology to prevent the disturbances by intermittent water supply. For the study, the hydraulic variation of intermittent flow in water distribution system was measured and analyzed in the field by comparing with simulation of hydraulic model. Installations of control valves such as, pressure reducing and sustaining and air valves were employed for pressure and flow control. The effectiveness of the methods are presented by comparing hydraulic conditions before and after introducing the proposed solutions.

  • To clarify the effects of equivalence ratio, initial pressure and temperature on the flame propagation and radicals characteristics, a series of the experimental study were conducted in a quiescent methane-air premixture using a constant volume chamber. The development of the flame was visualized following the start of ignition using high speed schlieren photo and radical images by intensified CCD camera. Combustion pressure and ion current were recorded simultaneously according to the experimental conditions which were equivalence ratio with 0.7 to 1.2, initial pressure with 0.08 MPa to 0.40 MPa and initial premixture temperature with 3l3.2K to 403.2K. The results showed that the flame speed by ion current and mass fraction burned by combustion pressure characterized the effects of flame propagation very well. And increased combustion duration due to lean combustion condition that was below equivalence ratio, 0.8 caused cycle variation and decreasing the power of engine.

  • Recently, the government introduced the thermal storage system for reducing the electric power load. Especially, the ice slurry type has gained lots of interest due to its good heat transfer and flowing characteristics. This study was peformed to understand the effects of transporting ice slurry through elbows of various angle. Propylene glycol water solution was used and about 2 mm ice particles were circulated. The experiments were carried out under various conditions, such as concentration and velocity of water solution ranging between 0∼20 wt%, 1.5∼2.5 m/s, respectively. And elbows with 4 different angles of 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$, 180$^{\circ}$. The differential pressure and IPF (ice packing factor) between the pipe entry and exit were measured. The tendency of pressure loss and outlet IPF in elbow is that the pressure loss was reduced as concentration and flow velocity of water solution is increased, and low value appeared at 10 wt% and 2.5 m/s. The variation of outlet IPF was compared with the inlet IPF in the range of $\pm$20%.
