Effect of Alcohol Insoluble Residues from Stem and Root Barks of Elm (Ulmus davidiana) on Intestinal Characteristics in Rats

  • Sprague-Dawley rats (n=32) were fed a diet containing basal (control), cellulose (5%), or alcohol insoluble residue (AIR) (5%) extracted from the stem and root barks of elm (Ulmus davidiana var. japonica Nakai) for 4 weeks. The effects of the diets, on gastrointestinal functions and morphology were evaluated. The weight gains, food intake, and food efficiencies for the cellulose and AIR diet-fed groups were not significantly different from those of the AIR-free (basal) diet. The gastrointestinal transit times of the stem and root bark AIR diets were significantly reduced (p<0.01) compared to the basal diet, and were slower than those of the cellulose diet. The fecal weights of the stem and root bark AIR diets were significantly increased (p<0.01) up to 4-fold compared to those of the basal diet. The height of the mucosal villi, and mucosal and muscle layer thicknesses of the colon were greater and more developed in the stem and root bark AIR diets (p<0.01) than in the basal diet. The villus heights in the jejunum and the colon mucosal goblet cells were more developed in the order of cellulose > stem bark AIR > root bark AIR diets.

건조방법과 한약재 추출물 첨가가 육포의 미세구조에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Drying Method and Medicinal Herb Extract Addition on the Microstructure of Beef Jerky)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 육포의 제조방법이 품질특성에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위하여 기본 양념(간장, 물엿, 참기름, 정종, 마늘, 양파, 배즙)에 설탕(A), 감초(B), 3종류의 향신료(정향;C, 회향;D, 청양고추;E) 추출물과 여러 추출물을 혼합 첨가(F)한 6군으로 나누어 쇠고기를 절인후, 열풍건조와 송풍건조하는 육포의 제조과정에서 근육의 미세구조 변화를 주사전자현미경(SEM)과 투과전자현미경(TEM)으로 관찰하였다. 투과전자현미경(TEM)으로 관찰한 결과, 쇠고기는 액틴과 미오신의 근육라인과 근원섬유가 평행으로 발달되어 있었고 세포의 미토콘드리아와 내막을 볼 수 있었으나 절임과정에서 근섬유가 절단되고 근육라인의 분해 및 세포 구조물들의 퇴행이 일어났다. 주사전자현미경(SEM)으로 관찰한 결과, 자연건조한 한약재 추출물 첨가 육포는 근원 섬유와 공간구조가 남아있고 육질이 보존되어 있었으나 열풍건조한 육포는 근원섬유의 배열과 공간구조가 전혀 관찰되지 않았다. 이상의 주사전자현미경과 투과전자현미경으로 육포의 미세구조를 관찰한 결과에서 한약재 추출물은 근섬유의 결을 보존하는데 도움이 되며 송풍건조는 열풍 건조에 비하여 육포의 물성을 좋게 함으로써 품질을 향상시킬 수 있는 건조방법으로 생각된다.

근육내 자극요법 후 목빗근내 농양의 치험례 (A Case of Intramuscular Abscess in the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle after Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS))

  • Purpose: Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) shows good results in the treatment of chronic pain patients who did not respond to other treatments such as oral analgesics, trigger point injection, nerve block and epidural steroid injection. But, IMS procedure especially, patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) has sometimes serious problem. So, we present a very rare case of intramuscular abscess in the sternocleiomastoid muscle after IMS with literature review. Methods: A 66 year old male visited our department 7 days after IMS in the neck. His premorbid conditions and risk factors of deep neck infection was DM and old age. Computed tomographic scans of the head and neck region were performed in this patient: signs of deep neck infection, were seen enhanced abscess in the sternocleidomastoid muscle, cellulitis overlying tissue of the neck, and air bubbles involved muscle. Necrotic wound was excised serially and we treated this with the Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC, Kinetics Concepts International, San Antonio, Texas) system device. After appropriately shaping the sponge in the pockets, continuous negative pressure of 125 mmHg was applied. The VAC therapy was utilized for a period of 12 days. Results: We obtained satisfactory results from wide excision, drainage of the abscess with the VAC system, and then primary closure. The postoperative course was uneventful. Results: We suggest that many of the infectious complications may be preventable by strict adherence to aseptic techniques and that some of the other complications may be minimized by refining the techniques with a clear understanding of the medical disorders of patients. And, the refined technique using the VAC system can provide a means of simple and effective management for the cervical intramuscular abscess, with better cosmetic and functional results.

Performance Improvement of Pneumatic Artificial Muscle Manipulators Using Magneto-Rheological Brake

  • A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator), which has achieved increased popularity to provide the advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks, has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. Then it is not easy to realize the performance of transient response of pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator (PAM manipulator) due to the changes in the external inertia load with high speed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, a variable damper-Magneto­Rheological Brake (MRB), is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control method brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity, uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control method and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.

  • Industrial robots are powerful, extremely accurate multi-jointed systems, but they are heavy and highly rigid because of their mechanical structure and motorization. Therefore, sharing the robot working space with its environment is problematic. A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator) has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. Its main advantages are high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks. The PAM is undoubtedly the most promising artificial muscle for the actuation of new types of industrial robots such as Rubber Actuator and PAM manipulators. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. In addition, the nonlinearities in the PAM manipulator still limit the controllability. Therefore, it is not easy to realize motion with high accuracy and high speed and with respect to various external inertia loads in order to realize a human-friendly therapy robot To overcome these problems a novel controller, which harmonizes a phase plane switching control method with conventional PID controller and the adaptabilities of neural network, is newly proposed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance a variable damper - Magneto-Rheological Brake (MRB) is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control using neural network brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control using neural network and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.

감마선 조사가 우육의 단백질 용해성, 수분손실 및 전단력에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Protein Solubility, Purge Loss and Shear Force of Beef)

  • 사후경직이 끝난 우육의 이화학적 특성에 감마선 조사가 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 우육의 m. semitendinosus을 공시시료로 사용하여 진공포장과 함기포장을 시킨 후 감마선 조사를 실시하였다. 냉장 $(4^{\circ}C)$ 상태에서 저장하는 동안 육단백질 용해성, 수분 손실, 유리아미노산의 함량 변화 및 전단력 변화를 측정한 결과, 감마선 조사가 우육의 수분손실과 유리아미노산의 함량에는 영향을 끼치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 감마선 조사된 우육의 단백질 용해성은 조사선량의 증가에 의존하여 증가하는 것으로 나타났고, 전단력은 감소되었다. 그러나, 포장방법에 따른 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 결론적으로 적절한 선량에서의 감마선 조사는 육질에 큰 영향을 끼치지 않고, 우육의 연도를 개선하는 것으로 판단된다.

Changes of abdominal muscle thickness during stable and unstable surface bridging exercise in young people

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to measure the muscle architectural parameters of abdominal muscles in healthy individuals by rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) and to investigate their changes after bridging exercise in various environments. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study included 40 healthy participants (19 men, 21 women). Subjects were randomly allocated to a stable surface group (SG, n=20) or an unstable surface group (UG, n=20). The participants assumed three positions in rest, bridging exercise with knee flexion $60^{\circ}$, and bridging exercise with knee flexion $90^{\circ}$ for the measurement of abdominal muscle thickness by RUSI. For the resting position, the participants held the head neutral in a hook-lying position and the dominant side was measured. For contraction, the participants performed the bridging exercise with the knee joint in $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ of flexion for 10 seconds each. Results: For transversus abdominis, external oblique muscle thickness, within the stable surface group and the unstable surface group, no significant contraction difference was observed in both the $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ bridge exercise conditions. Contraction difference of internal oblique muscle was significantly larger at $90^{\circ}$ than at $60^{\circ}$ within the SG (p<0.05). But within the UG, no significant contraction difference was shown. There was no significant contraction difference between the surface group and the unstable SG at $60^{\circ}$ condition and at $90^{\circ}$ condition in all measured muscles. Conclusions: The contraction difference is different for each muscle during bridge exercise with knee flexion $60^{\circ}$ and bridging exercise with knee flexion $90^{\circ}$. Muscle contraction difference is generally large when exercised on an unstable surface than a stable surface, but these are not statistically significant when bridging exercise is performed using dynamic air cushion for unstable surface.

Changes in Ultrastructure and Sensory Characteristics on Electro-magnetic and Air Blast Freezing of Beef during Frozen Storage

  • The ultrastructure in the beef muscle of the electro-magnetic resonance and air blast freezing during the frozen storage, and the changes in the quality characteristics after thawing were evaluated. The size of ice crystal was small and evenly formed in the initial freezing period, and it showed that the size was increased as the storage period was elapsed (p<0.05). The beef stored by the electro-magnetic resonance freezing showed the size of ice crystal with a lower rate of increase than the air blast freezing during the frozen storage. The thawing loss of beef stored by the electro-magnetic resonance freezing was significantly lower than the air blast freezing during frozen storage (p<0.05), and it showed that the thawing loss of the round was higher than the loin. Water holding capacity decreased as the storage period became longer while the electro-magnetic resonance freezing was higher than the air blast on 8 month (p<0.05). As a result of sensory evaluation, the beef stored by the electro-magnetic resonance freezing did not show the difference until 4 months, and it showed higher acceptability in comparison with the beef stored by the air blast freezing. Thus, it is considered that the freezing method has an effect on the change in the ultrastructure and quality characteristics of the beef.

지연성 근육통 유발 후 냉기 적용 방법이 피부온도의 변화, 냉각 통과 근육 기능에 미치는 효과 (Effects of skin temperature change, cold pain and muscle activity by Cold Air Application type on the induced delayed onset muscle soreness)

  • 본 연구는 급성염증과 비슷한 지연성 근육통이 있을 때 초기 한냉치료를 적용함에 있어 냉기에 의한 냉각통증을 최소화하면서, 근육온도를 낮출 수 있는 방법으로 냉기단독과 냉기와 적외선 조사 병용을 적용하여 피부온도에 미치는 영향을 측정하고, 냉기와 적외선 병용치료의 효율성을 평가함과 동시에 초음파를 통한 근 두께를 바탕으로 등척성 근기능을 평가해보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과 냉기와 적외선 병용치료 시 냉기 단독치료보다 냉각통증의 빈도가 낮게 나타났으며, 냉각통증 자각 시점도 늦게 나타났다. 또한 충분한 냉기적용 후 피부온도가 재가온되는데 있어서 냉기를 2회 적용할 때가 1회 적용할 때 보다 더 느려지며, 냉기 단독치료보다 냉기와 적외선 광선 조사 병용치료 시 더 느려짐을 나타내어 2회 이상의 반복적인 냉기 적용이 냉기의 효용이 있다고 나타났다. 또한 상완이두근 두께 변화에 있어서 병용군이 대조군보다 더 크게 나타나 이 효과를 뒷받침하게 되었다. 이러한 연구결과 자료는 향후 급성염증이 있는 환자에게 한냉치료와 관련된 치료적인 자료로써 활용될 수 있을 것이라 생각되고 근골격계 초음파 진단기를 활용하여 통증에 대한 자각도를 간접적으로 표현하는 것이 구체화되어 임상에서 널리 활용될 것으로 보여진다.

한국산(韓國産) 전통(傳統) 가금육(家禽肉)의 냉동저장(冷凍貯藏)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on Frozen Storage for Korean Traditional Poultry)

  • 한국산 가금육(육계, 재래닭, 오골계 및 꿩의 다리살과 가슴살)을 냉동후 $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ 및 microwave로 해동하고, 해동방법에 따른 품질변화를 검토하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 해동 후 pH는 각 해동조건에서 냉동 전보다 모두 낮아졌으며 microwave 해동시의 pH 변화가 제일 적었고, 가슴살이 다리살 보다 큰 pH의 변화를 보였다. 또한 가금육의 품종별 비교에 있어서 pH의 저하는 오골계의 경우 가장 컸으며, 꿩에서 가장 적었다. 2. 해동후의 육즙 발생율은 microwave 해동시 가장 적었으며 부위별로는 다리살이 9~11%, 가슴살이 11~14%로 다리살의 경우 다소 낮아 보수력은 좋게 나타났다. 또한 품종별로는 육계 및 꿩에서의 육즙 발생율이 적었고 오골계에서 가장 많았다. 3. pH와 보수력은 1차함수의 관계로 pH가 낮아짐에 따라 육즙발생이 많이 생겨 보수력이 떨어지는 경향을 보였다. 이때 r값은 -0.82~-0.91의 값을 나타내었다. 4. 모든 가금육에 있어서 가슴살보다 다리살의 전단력이 컸으며, microwave 해동과 $5^{\circ}C$ 해동에 있어서는 비슷한 경향을 보였으며, $20^{\circ}C$ 해동에 있어서는 전단력의 큰 변화를 보여주었다. 5. 전단력과 pH는 1차 함수의 관계로 pH가 내려감에 따라 전단력이 저하하는 경향을 보였으며 이때 r값은 0.80~0.96의 값을 나타내었다.
