  • Heat pump systems for commercial building with variable refrigerant flow(VRF) are expanding a market due to high energy efficiency, lower maintenance cost and easy installation comparing with the conventional heat pump with the constant refrigerant flow. In general, heat pump systems degrade the energy efficiency in the extremely low temperature regions. In this study, VRF heat pump system with refrigerant heating is experimentally investigated to overcome the low heating performance in the extremely low temperature regions. VRF heat pump system with refrigerant heating is found out the sufficient heating performance in the -25 degree temperature condition comparing with the conventional heat pump system and is obtained more than 2,500 kPa high pressure in the evaporator at low temperature.

  • Air-source heat pumps are widely used in residential heating systems. However, the decrease in the capacity of the heat pump is unavoidable when operating at very low and high ambient temperatures. The vapor injection technique is considered a promising technology to overcome this problem. Recent research on vapor injection cycles have mainly adopted a scroll compressor with an internal heat exchanger at severe operating conditions. This study measured the COP and EER of a gas injection heat pump using a flash tank with an inverter-driven rotary compressor at severe operating conditions. Compared to non-injection heat pumps, the heating capacity and COP of the gas injection heat pump improved up to 15% and 2.9%, respectively, at outdoor temperatures of $-10^{\circ}C$ to $7^{\circ}C$. The cooling capacity of the gas injection heat pump was 11% higher than the non-injection heat pump at an outdoor temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. At the same time, the EER of the gas injection heat pump was similar to that of the non-injection heat pump.

  • This paper presents the performance of a water-to-refrigerant type ground source heat pump (GSHP) system installed in a school building in Korea. For analyzing the performance of the GSHP system, we monitored various operating conditions, including the outdoor temperature, the ground temperature, and the input power of the GSHP system. The average cooling coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump was found to be 8.5 at 60% partial load condition, while the overall system COP was found to be 5.9. The average heating COP of the heat pump was found to be 6.5 at 45% partial load condition, while the overall system COP was found to be 5.0.

  • A technical analysis was conducted to predict the development trends for heat pump system. This study was based on submitted patents from 1983 to 2002 in Korea, USA, and Japan. The total number of raw data from the registered database was 19,261 and the obtained data to be analyzed through the filtering process was 5,143. Japan's technical development for the heat pump system was more dominant than the other countries. Approximately $54\%$ of the total patents related with the heat pump system was registered by Japan. The number of patents for the heat pump system registered by Korea was very low in 1980's, but it increased rapidly in 1990's. As a result, the number of patents applied by Korea was $21\%$ of all patents. When the patent was categorized into compression, absorption/ad-sorption, and chemical type, the technology of compression type made up over $80\%$ in each country. Approximately $93\%$ of the patents surveyed in this study was developed for air or water source heat pumps because of easy applications compared with other heat sources. The $89\%$ of all patents was applied by companies when applicants were divided into three groups of company, individual, and the others (national institute, university, and so on).

  • The aim of this study is to verify the performance of water-to-air multi-heat pump system with a vertical U-tube GLHX(U-tube system) and a double tube GLHX(double tube system), which were installed in a school building located in Asan. For analyzing the performance of the GSHP system, we monitored various operating da~ including the water temperature of inlet and outlet of the ground heat exchanger, mass flow rate, and power consumption. Daily average COP of the single U-tube system and the double tube system were 4.5 and 4.2 at cooling mode and were 3.5 and 3.8 at heating mode. As a result, We know that performance of water-to-air multi-heat pump unit is reliable at actual condition operated in a part load conditions for all day.

  • Solar assisted heat pump system uses solar thermal energy as a heat source of evaporator of heat pump. So, COP can be enhanced as well as collector efficiency. For improving performance of this system, some research about hybrid solar collector that has fin-and-tube heat exchanger has been conducted. This collector can get a thermal energy from ambient air for liquid heating, so heated liquid can be used as a heat source of evaporator in heat pump even the solar radiation is not enough. In this study, numerical analysis was conducted for confirming heat gain of liquid according to fin height and pitch of fin-and-tube heat exchanger in collector. As a result, higher heat gain was obtained on lower fin height and narrow fin pitch, but the pressure drop also increased with increment of heat gain. Thus the JF factor considering both heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop was investigated and the maximum value was shown when the fin height and pitch were 40mm and 45mm. So it is considered that this installation condition has a highest heat transfer improvement when comparing with pressure drop. However heat gain of liquid at this condition was less than the other installation conditions of fin pitch on same height. Then, after establishing a proper minimum heat gain of liquid, actual production and experiment of collector will be conducted with fin height and pitch showing maximum JF factor and satisfying selected minimum heat gain of liquid on the basis of results of this study.

Cascade heat pump system is composed R410A compressor, R134a compressor, EEV, cascade heat exchanger, Plate heat exchanger etc. Building area is $890m^2$ and has five floors above ground. R410A is used for a low-stage working fluid while R134a is for a high-stage. The system could runs at dual mode. One is mode of general R410A refrigeration cycle in summer and the other is cascade cycle. In order to gain a high temperature supply water in winter season, the system is designed to perform a cascade cycle. The filed test results show that the sea water heat source heat pump system exhibits a COP of about 5.5 in cooling mode along with a heating COP of about 4.0 in 1-stage heating mode. Cascade 2-stage heat pump system is enough to supply $60^{\circ}C$ water and heating COP is about 3.0

  • Ground heat pump systems utilize the annually stable underground temperature to supply heat for space heating and cooling. The underground temperature affects not only the underground ecosystem, but also the performance of these systems. However, in spite of the widespread use of these systems, there have been few researches on the effect of the systems on underground temperature. In this research, case studies with numerical simulation have been conducted, in order to estimate the effect of ground heat pump systems on underground temperature. The simulation was coupled with the ground water-ground heat transfer model and the ground surface heat transfer model. In the result, it was found that the underground change depends on the heat transfer from the ground surface, the heat exchange rate, and the heat conductivity of soil.

  • In this study a hybrid heating system based on geothermal source and solar heat was developed in order to save energy for greenhouse heating and its field performance was evaluated. Developed system are composed of following parts: water tank, heat exchanger, heat pump, fan coil unit and heat storage unit. The working performance test was carried out in a greenhouse cultivating oriental orchids being managed by $23^{\circ}C$. Field performance test results showed that average heating coefficient of performance ($COP_h$) was 3.4 for the period from mid-January to mid-March 2013. Heating coefficient of performance ($COP_h$) of developed hybrid heat pump system was more sensitive to water tank temperature than outside air temperature. This study showed that developed hybrid heat pump system has a potential to save the heating costs up to 91% compared to conventional agricultural oil heaters.
