The heat transfer and friction characteristics of the heat exchangers having sinusoidal wave fins were experimentally investigated. Twenty-nine samples having different waffle heights (1.5 mm and 2.0 m), fin pitches (1.3mm to 1.7mm) and tube rows (one to three) were tested. Focus was given to the effect of the waffle configuration (herringbone or sinusoidal) on the heat transfer and friction characteristics. Results show that the sinusoidal wave geometry provides higher heat transfer coefficients and friction factors than the herringbone wave geometry, and the difference increases as the number of row increases. The i/f ratios of the herringbone wave geometry, however, are larger than those of the sinusoidal wave geometry. Compared to the herringbone wave geometry, the sinusoidal wave geometry yielded a weak row effect, which suggests a superior heat transfer performance at the fully developed flow region. Possible explanation is provided considering the flow characteristics in wavy channels. Within the present geometric range, the effect of the waffle height on the heat transfer coefficient was not prominent. The effect of the fin pitch was also negligible. Existing correlations highly overpredicted both the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A new correlation was developed using the present data.

This study investigates the simultanceous heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow at the interface. The application of this work is the optimization of falling film evaporators for use in potential hybrid air conditioning systems. The specific geometry considered is liquid TEG films falling along the vertical cooled surfaces of a channel with air in cross flow. The equations to describe the coupled heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow for a falling film evaporator have been presented and solved numerically. The effects of important design and operating variables on the evaporator performance predicted by the parametric numerical analysis and suggestions for performance improvements of the evaporator are presented.
A series of numerical analyses was conducted to predict the thermal performance of a solar air heater depending on the hole configuration and geometry in the absorber plate. The planar dimensions of the prototype were 1 m (W) by 1.6 m (H), and the maximum air flow considered was $187m^3/h$. It was considered that protruding holes with a triangular opening in the absorber plate would invoke turbulence in the air flow to enhance the convection heat transfer. Six different hole configurations were investigated and compared with each other, while the hole opening height was considered as a design variable. Three-dimensional transient analyses were performed with a commercial software package on the airflow and heat transfer in the model. The numerical results were analyzed and compared from the view point of the outlet air temperature and its time response to derive the optimal hole pattern and hole opening height.

In this paper, recent research trend on heat transfer in impinging jet is reviewed. We focused on submerged jet that air issued into air or liquid issued into liquid. To control and enhance the heat transfer in single jet, researchers have performed a lot of experiments by considering the nozzle geometry, impinging surface and active method such as jet vibration, secondary injection and suction flow. The studies on multiple jet have been mainly focused on finding out the optimum condition and on investigating many different factors concerned with application condition (crossflow, rotation and geometry etc.) and combined techniques (rib turbulator, pin fin, dimple and effusion hole etc.). All most experiments showed the detailed heat transfer data by using liquid crystal method, infrared camera technique and naphthalene sublimation method. Many numerical calculations have been performed to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics in laminar jet region. Various turbulence models such as $k-\varepsilon-\bar{\nu^2}$, modified $k-\varepsilon-f_{\mu}$ were applied to the calculation for turbulent jet and the predicted results showed a good agreement with the experimental data. Although a lot of studies on impinging jet have performed consistently up to recently, further studies are still required to understand the flow and heat transfer characteristics more accurately, and to give a guideline for optimum impinging jet design in various applications.

This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.

A typical heat exchanger, found in many industrial sites, is made up of a large number of unitary cells, which causes difficulties when carrying out full-scale three-dimensional numerical simulations of the heat exchanger to analyze the aero-thermal performance. In the present study, a three-dimensional numerical study using a porous media model was carried out to evaluate the performance of the heat exchanger modelled in two different ways : full-scale and simplified. The pressure drop in the air side and gas side along with the overall heat transfer rate were calculated using a porous media model and the results were then compared to results obtained with a one-dimensional flow network model. The comparison between the results for two different geometries obtained using a porous media model and a one-dimensional flow network model shows good agreement between the simplified geometry and the one-dimensional flow network model. The full-scale geometry shows reasonable differences caused by the geometry such as sudden expansion and contraction.

Air interlacing serves to protect the yarn against damage, strengthens inter-filament compactness or cohesion, and ensures fabric consistency. The air interlacing nozzle is used to introduce intermittent nips to a filament yarn so as to improve its performance in textile processing. This study investigates the effect of interlacing nozzle geometry on the interlacing process. The geometries of interlacing nozzles with multiple air inlets located across the width of a yarn channels are investigated. The basic interlacing nozzle is the yarn channel, with a perpendicular single air inlet in the middle. The yarn channel shapes are cross sections with semicircular or rectangular shapes. This paper presents three doubled sub air inlets with main air inlet and one of them is slightly inclined doubled sub air inlets with main air inlet. The compressed air coming out from the inlet hits the opposing wall of the yarn channel, divides into two branches, flows trough the top side of yarn channel, joins with the compressed air coming out from the sub air inlet and then creates two free jets at both ends of the yarn channel. The compressed air moves in the shape of two opposing directional vortices. The CFD-FASTRAN was used to perform steady simulations of impinging jet flow inside of the interlace nozzles. The vortical structure and the flow pattern such as pressure contour, particle traces, velocity vector plots inside of interlace nozzle geometry are discussed in this paper.

A grease filter is used to remove grease generated from a cooking appliance in a kitchen. Since the inertial impaction is a dominant particle removal mechanism of the grease filter, the performance of the filter is greatly affected by the geometry. This numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of geometry on the performance of grease filters for four models having nominal flowrate of 100 m$^3$/h. Four models were designed by changing the shape of impaction surface, the length of eyelid, and the number of eyelids of the grease filter. The flow field and particle trajectories in the grease filter with a flow chamber were simulated using the commercial code of STAR-CD. The difference of air velocity and pressure distributions among four models was discussed in detail. The collection efficiency curves and the pressure drops of four models were also compared. It was found that the grease filter model with flat top surfaces shows highest performance among four models, having high particle collection efficiency and relatively low pressure drop. The cutoff diameter of this model representing 50-% collection efficiency is about 7.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for water droplets at 100 m$^3$/h.

The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a round header - flat tube geometry simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger. The number of branch flat tube is thirty. The effects of tube outlet direction, tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated. The flow at the header inlet is identified as annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted configuration, most of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, however, most of the water flows through rear part of the header. The protrusion depth, mass flux, or quality does not significantly alter the flow pattern. Possible explanations are provided based on the flow visualization results. Negligible difference on the water flow distribution was observed between the parallel and the reverse flow configuration.

The monopole theory has long been used to model air-pumped effect from the elastic cavities in car tire. This approach models the change of an air as a Piston moving backward and forward on a spring and equates local air movements exactly with the volume changes of the system. Thus, the monopole theory has a restricted domain of applicability due to the usual assumption of a small amplitude acoustic wave equation and acoustic monopole theory This paper describes an approach to predict the air-pumping noise of a car tyre with CFD/Kirchhoff integral method. The tyre groove is simply modeled as piston-cavity-sliding door geometry and with the aid of CFD technique flow properties in the groove of rolling car tyre are acquired.'rhese unsteady flow data are used as a air-pumping source in the next CFD calculation of full tyre-road geometry. Acoustic far field is predicted from Kirchhoff integral method by using unsteady flow data in space and time which is provided by the CFD calculation of full tyre-road domain. This approach can cover the non-linearity of acoustic monopole theory with the aid of Non-linear governing equation in CFD calculation. The method proposed in this paper is applied to the prediction of air-pumping noise of simply modeled car tyre and through the predicted results, the influence of nonlinear effect on air-pumping noise propagation is investigated.
