Recently, a great deal of research and development of a fuel cell have been carried out to solve problems on the drain of fossil fuel, air pollution and global warning. In order to improve the efficiency of a fuel cell, it is necessary to clarify the flow in separator. In this study, distributions of velocity flow rate and pressure, and streamlines are examined in detail from numerical analysis with CFD code. In the experiment the distribution of flow rate is measured and flow in the each grooves of the separator is visualized by dye method changing Reynolds number. Furthermore, effects of size of the inlet and outlet manifolds and shape of ribs near the inlet outlet on the distributions of flow and pressure are examined.

It is well known that a lean burn engine caused by stratified mixture formation has many kinds of advantages to combustion characteristics, such as higher thermal efficiency and lower CO, NOx levels than conventional homogeneous mixture combustion. Although this combustion can achieve low fuel consumption technology, it produces much unburned hydrocarbon and soot because of heterogeneous equivalence ratio in the combustion chamber. Therefore, the stratified mixture formation technology is very important to obtain the stable lean combustion. In this paper, fundamental studies for stratified combustion were carried out using a constant volume combustion chamber. The local effect of mixture formation according to control air-fuel distribution in the chamber was examined experimentally. In addition, the effect of turbulence on stratified charge combustion process was observed by schlieren photography. From this study, we found that the flame propagation speed increase with swirl flow and the swirl promotes the formation of fuel and air mixture.
Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion has a great advantage in reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) by lowering the combustion temperature due to spontaneous ignitions at multiple sites in a very lean combustible mixture. However, it is difficult to make a diesel-fuelled HCCI possible because of a poor vaporability of the fuel. To resolve this problem, the two-stage injection strategy was introduced to promote the ignition of the extremely early injected fuel. The compression ratio and air-fuel ratio were found to affect not only the ignition, but also control the combustion phase without a need for the intake-heating or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The ignition timing could be controlled even at a higher compression ratio with increased IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure). The NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emission level could be reduced by more than 90 % compared with that in a conventional DI (Direct Injection) diesel combustion mode, but the increase of PM and HC (Hydrocarbon) emissions due to over-penetration of spray still needs to be resolved.
Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is a method used to control oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$) in combustion system. The recirculated flue gases resulted in slow reaction and low flame temperatures, which in turn resulted in decreased thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that introducing the recirculated flue gas in the fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), resulted in a much greater reduction in $NO_x$ per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to introducing the flue gases in air. In the present study, the effect on $NO_x$ reduction in turbulent swirl flame in laboratory scale using FGR/FIR methods through the dilution using $N_2$ and $CO_2$. Results. show the $CO_2$ dilution is more effective $NO_x$ reduction methods because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. FIR is more effective to reduce $NO_x$ emission than FGR when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas.

The purpose of this work is to develop an effective active control system for combustion instabilities of premixed combustors. For the first step, the natural modes of combustion oscillation were investigated for a methane-air premixed combustor and the controls by secondary fuel injection were examined. The main premixed flame is stabilized by a swirler with orifices for secondary injection installed on the central hub. For sensing purposes, a pressure transducer and a chemiluminescence sensor were placed on the appropriate positions. The acoustic characteristics and the source of the oscillation were analyzed by those signals. To test the controllability, two methods of actuations by secondary fuel injection were examined. One is the open loop control and the other is the closed loop control. The comparison of the reduction levels of p $_{rms}$ shows that the closed loop control with a phase-shift injection performs best in this condition.ition.n.

This study considered the feasibility of controlling the air concentration by oscillating flow in fuel cell channels. The fuel cell stack performance is largely influenced by the air concentration. If the air concentration is lower than 2.5 times the stoichiometric of the inlet air, the fuel cell stack performance seriously deteriorates because of air starvation. In this respect, optimizing the air concentration is crucially important to maximizing the fuel cell stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation were studied to control the concentration. Studies have shown that there are two non-dimensional key parameters related to the frequency and oscillating amplitude. This paper presents how those parameters affect the performance of the stack.

In this study, the roadability, fuel economy and emission characteristics were evaluated for a natural gas converted vehicle. The results are as follows; Not only the shortage of power was observed in stall test, but also large deterioration of acceleration performance was exposed in roadability. Compared to the original LPG system, the acceleration is 76% in start acceleration and 45 ~ 65% in overtaking acceleration, especially the decline became larger when air conditioner is at work. Furthermore, because the mapping data, which controls the injection depending on driving condition, do not match up with injection system, the failure of air-fuel ratio feedback control occurs resulting from the large gap between the required and the really supplied amount of fuel. This failure cause the exhaust gas to emit without catalytic conversion and the fuel economy based on the fuel heat value to get worse 22% in the mode test and 16% in road test respectively. In addition, the existing injection system does not secure enough fuel at the starting so that it may lead to the fail of clod start, the deterioration of hot start and inharmonic of engine at the idle after start.

LPG direct injection (LPDi) technology is a method of improving the weaknesses of existing LPG vehicles by directly injection into the combustion chamber. This study was conducted on the comparison of emissions and fuel efficiency performance of the engine and vehicle by applying LPDi technology. The LPDi hybrid engine's maximum output and maximum torque were measured at an equivalent level of less than 1% compared to conventional gasoline fuel. The fuel amount was corrected using the LCU controller, and the THC, CO, and NOx emissions were reduced to 90% in the operating range of the three-way catalyst through air-fuel ratio control. The analysis of THC+NOx and CO emissions in FTP-75 (CVS-75) driving mode satisfied the US LEV III SULEV30 regulation.

In this study, we propose trajectory-based arrival management using CDO (Continuos Descent Operations). The operational procedures with TBO (Trajectory-Based Operations) concept were established to allow aircraft and ground system to share the trajectories with each other in real time. The proposed operational concept was validated in the air traffic control simulation environment, which consists of controller working position, pseudo pilot system, air traffic generation system, and controllers' decision support system for arrival management using CDO. Simulation results compared with actual flight data indicate that proposed concept could improve the efficiency of traffic flow management in terms of total descending time and fuel consumption. And it was confirmed that if there is a system that can share and utilize the synchronized trajectory, it can be helpful to control arrival aircraft and apply CDO concept.
