Anti-inflammatory Compounds from the Leaves of Ailanthus altissima Meihua JIN

  • In our ongoing search for biological components from the Korea endemic plants, the MeOH extract of Ailanthus altissima leaves (Simaroubaceae) showed cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) dual inhibitory activity by assessing their effects on the production of prostaglandin $D_2$ ($PGD_2$) and leukotriene $C_4$ ($LTC_4$) in mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs). In further study, eight compounds, squalene (1), ${\beta}$-sitosterol (2), scopoletin (3), quercetin (4), luteolin (5), astragalin (6), scopolin (7), and daucosterol (8) were isolated, the chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of physicochemical and spectroscopic data and by comparison with those of published literatures. Among the compounds, 2, 4, and 5 strongly inhibited both the COX-2-dependent PGD2 generation with $IC_{50}$ values of 2.6, 7.3 and 2.5 ${\mu}M$, respectively and the generation of $LTC_4$ in the 5-LOX dependent phase with $IC_{50}$ values of 2.0, 5.1 and 1.8 ${\mu}M$, respectively, which suggest that the anti-inflammatory activity of A. altissima might occur in part via the inhibition of both $PGD_2$ and $LTC_4$ generation by 2, 4 and 5.

가죽나무군락의 공간별 분포특성에 관한 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Spatial Diffusion Patterns of Ailanthus altissima Communities)

  • 본 연구는 가죽나무의 확산에 필수적으로 요구되는 공간분포를 조사하고 입지특성, 식물상 분석을 실시하여 관리에 유용한 정보를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 조사지점은 군락의 우점도가 높고, 생육입지가 균질한 유형을 고려하여 김천, 산청과 양평의 3장소를 선정하여 Line-transect 방법으로 전수조사를 실시하였다. 분포 면적 크기는 양평 1,435 $m^2$, 김천 1,118 $m^2$, 산청 760 $m^2$ 순으로 확인되었으며 총 510개체가 공간상에서 무작위(random)적으로 분포하는 것으로 나타났다. 전체 흉고직경(DBH) 계급범위(Class) 중 I(1.0-3.4 cm), II(3.5-6.4 cm))에 포함되는 가죽나무는 평균 83.2%로 가죽나무군락은 직경이 작은 개체가 우점하며 생육지의 교란정도에 따른 분포 패턴이 밝혀졌다. 식물상은 총 43과 75속 91종이 조사되었으며 3지역 모두 일년생식물(Th)이 가장 높게 나타나, 생육지가 최근에 교란이 발생된 지역임을 알 수 있었다. 가죽나무개체군의 확산을 방지하기 위해선 도로변 개체군 제거와 동시에 산지개체군제거가 필요할 것으로 판단되었다.

Expansion of an invasive species, Ailanthus altissima, at a regional scale in Japan

  • Ailanthus altissima, which is recognized as an invasive tree in the Western world, has been widely observed in Japan. To investigate how A. altissima expanded within-population and to new populations within a region, 446 A. altissima trees were sampled from three separate sites (A, B, and C) including 35 distantly positioned patches, with three chloroplast DNA markers and nine nuclear microsatellite markers. We detected 2, 2, and 3 chloroplast haplotypes in sites A, B, and C, respectively. In addition, 271, 40, and 41 nuclear genotypes were detected in sites A, B, and C, respectively. The clonal richness value was 0.85, 0.78, and 0.53 in sites A, B, and C, respectively. Most trees with the same genotypes were distributed in the same patch, indicating that range expansion by asexual reproduction was limited to a maximum of 45 meters. According to autocorrelation analysis, the extent of nonrandom spatial genetic structure was approximately 0-2 km in sites A and C. KINGROUP analyses showed that 812, 74, and 111 nuclear genotype pairs were detected to have kinship in sites A, B, and C, respectively. Most nuclear genotype pairs were detected within the same patches or sites. These results indicate that the number of A. altissima trees gradually increased from seeds, some of which were produced by trees within sites, meaning that this species could regenerate naturally. This shows the need for the future management of A. altissima as an invasive species in Japan.

  • In order to search for the anti-HIV agents from natural products, Eighty MeOH extracts of medicinal plants were applied to a syncytia formation inhibition assay which is based on the interaction between the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120/gp41 and the cellular membrane protein CD4 of T lymphocytes. Among them, Ailanthus altissima showed a potent virus-cell fusion inhibitory activity. (omitted)

가죽나무(Ailanthus altissima)의 부위별 성분 분석 (Analysis of Components in the Different Parts of Ailanthus altissima)

  • 본 연구는 뿌리를 저근백피라는 한방생약재로 사용하는 가죽나무(Ailanthus altissima)의 뿌리와 줄기 그리고 잎을 기능성 식품을 개발하기 위한 연구의 일환으로 영양정분과 생리활성 물질의 함유량을 측정하였다. 일반성분을 분석한 결과 뿌리에는 조회분(9.20%)과 조단백질(7.86%)이 많았으며, 잎에는 조단백질(11.36%) 그리고 줄기에서는 탄수화물(81.74%)의 함유량이 비교적 높았다. 수용성 단백질은 잎에서 9,839.52 mg%로 뿌리와 줄기보다 매우 많이 함유하였으며, 환윈당과 유리당은 뿌리에서 1,813.94 mg%와 1,140.20 mg%, 잎에서는 1,670.98 mg%와 1,190.42 mg%를 함유하였다. 유리아미노산은 뿌리에서 2,018.58 mg%로 잎(1,070.88 mg%)과 줄기(427.55 mg%)보다 많이 함유하였으며, 특히 뿌리에는 arginine과aspartic acid의 함유량이 매우 높아 유리아미노산의 약 85%를 차지하였다. 아미노산 유도체 함량은 잎에서 780.70 mg%로 가장 높았으며, 뿌리는 430.95 mg%을 함유하였다. 이중 뿌리에는 항산화 및 간기능 향상에 효과가 있는 것으로 알려진 taurine을 61.68 mg% 함유하였다. 가죽나무의 부위별 무기질을 분석한 결과 모든 부위에서 Ca와 K 그리고 Mg의 함유량이 매우 높아 무기질 총량의 $83{\sim}98%$를 차지하였으며, 뿌리에는 Fe와 Al의 함량도 비교적 높았다. 가죽나무의 부위별 시료와 추출물에 대한 폴리페놀과 플라보노이드 화합물을 측정한 결과, 잎에는 821.58 mg%의 폴리페놀과 2,501.67 mg%의 플라보노이드를 함유하였으며, 추출물 또한 잎의 물 추출물에서 8,040.35 mg%의 폴리페놀과 에탄을 추출물에서 13,592.20mg%의 플라보노이드를 함유하였다. 이상의 결과 한방생약재로 사용되고 있는 가죽나무의 뿌리를 포함하여 잎에서도 영양성분과 생리활성 물질이 다량 함유된 것으로 분석되었다.

Visual and Physiological Characteristic Changes of Five Tree Species Exposed to SO2

  • After long exposure to low-density $SO_2$ the five tree species showed different changes in their visible damage: Ailanthus altissima showed no visible damage; Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa, and Platanus orientalis showed typical damage of yellow spots on their leaves; and Liriodendron tulipifera showed serious damage on the end of leaf tip. The photosynthesis rate of Liriodendron tulipifera and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus was usually lower than the control group: Ailanthus altissima, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa, and Platanus orientalis showed no difference from the control group, while Acanthopanax sessiliflorus and Liriodendron tulipifera showed large changes. In regard to the light compensation points, Ailanthus altissima showed similar values, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa and Platanus orientalis exposed to $SO_2$, showed 3 to $5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ higher values than the control group, and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus and Liriodendron tulipifera exposed to $SO_2$ showed approximately twice higher light compensation points.

Environmental Factors Affecting Establishment and Expansion of the Invasive Alien Species of Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) in Seoripool Park, Seoul

  • Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima Swingle) as an invasive alien plant, appeared usually in the disturbed locations such as road-side, incised slope, and trampling path-side. They appeared abundantly in the trampling pathside but they did not appear or were rare in the interior of forest. Density and importance value of tree of heaven were proportionate to the relative light intensity measured according to distance from the trampling path toward forest interior and closely related to the breadth of trampling path as well. They were associated with annual, other exotic species or ruderal plants well. Distributional pattern of mature trees of them in the study area and its surrounding environments implied that they were introduced intentionally. Size class distribution of them showed that they are in expansion and artificial interferences such as, installing physical training space and developing hiking course functioned as trigger factors in their invasion and expansion. The results support the facts known generally in relation to invasion and expansion of the invasive alien plants. In this viewpoint, we suggest a management plan that applies ecological restoration principles to address ecosystems infected with tree of heaven by restoring the integral feature of the degraded nature and conserving the remained nature more thoroughly.

Triterpenoids and Sterones from the Stem Bark of Ailanthus altissima

  • One new tirucallane-type triterpenoid, alianthusaltinin A (1), one new $C_{29}$ sterone, alianthaltone A (2), and 12 known compounds have been isolated from the stem bark of Ailanthus altissima. The structures of new compounds were identified by means of spectroscopic methods. Compound 3 was isolated from natural sources for the first time, and compounds 4, 5, and 9 were isolated from this plant for the first time.
