  • This study performed field examinations of a zero discharge and reuse system developed by Hong and Choi(2009). The system installed one of villages located in Hyoryeong-myeon, Gunwee-gun for the experiments. The zero discharge and reuse system consists of anoxic, FES (Ferrous Electricity System), Oxic, Cralifier processes for water treatments. The main feature of the system is to remove phosphorous by using Fe-ionizing module within the FES process. The water purification performances of the system were evaluated, while any defects for using the system were investigated through the field monitoring. It was found that the removal capacities of T-P, T-N, and BOD of the system meet the required water quality with outstanding performance from T-P by obtaining the results of over 90 % removal rates. The efficiency of T-P removal rate of the system found to be greatly influenced by whether using an automatic washing system to the Fe-ionizing module and conducting replacement of iron plate within a proper period.

  • BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is produced by chemical reactions between various precursors. PM2.5 has been found to create greater human risk than particulate matter (PM10), with diameters that are generally 10 micrometers and smaller. Ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the sources of secondary generation of PM2.5. These substances generate PM2.5 through some chemical reactions in the atmosphere. Through chemical reactions in the atmosphere, NH3 generates PM2.5. It is the causative agent of PM2.5. In 2017 the annual ammonia emission recorded from the agricultural sector was 244,335 tons, which accounted for about 79.3% of the total ammonia emission in Korea in that year. To address this issue, the agricultural sector announced the inclusion of reducing fine particulate matter and ammonia emissions by 30% in its targets for the year 2022. This may be achieved through analyses of its emission characteristics by monitoring the PM2.5 and NH3. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the PM2.5 concentration was measured real-time (every 1 hour) by using beta radiation from the particle dust measuring device (Spirant BAM). NH3 concentration was analyzed real-time by Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS). The concentrations of ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were continuously measured and analyzed for the masses collected on filter papers by ultraviolet photometry and chemiluminescence. CONCLUSION: This study established air pollutant monitoring system in agricultural areas to analyze the NH3 emission characteristics. The amount of PM2.5 and NH3 emission in agriculture was measured. Scientific evidence in agricultural areas was obtained by identifying the emission concentration and characteristics per season (monthly) and per hour.

  • The particulate matters (PM10 and PM2.5) and ammonia emitted from livestock farms as dispersed to urban and residential areas can increase the public's concern over the health problem, social conflicts, and air quality. Understanding the atmospheric dispersion of such matters is important to prevent the problems for the regulatory purposes. In this study, AERMOD modeling was performed to predict the dispersion of livestock particulate matters and ammonia in Gwangju metropolitan city and five surrounding cities. The five cities were divided into 40 sub-zones to model the area-based emissions which varied with the number of livestock farms, species and growth stages of the animals. As a result, the concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and ammonia resulted from livestock farms located in the surrounding cities were 2.00 ㎍ m-3, 0.30 ㎍ m-3 and 0.04 ppm in the southwestern part of Gwangju based on the average concentration of 1 hour. These values accounted for 0.7% of PM10 concentration, 0.5% of PM2.5 concentration, and 0.4% of the ammonia concentration in Gwangju, contributing to a small amount of air pollution compared to other sources. As preventive measures, the plantation was applied to high emission source areas to reduce particulate matters and ammonia emissions by 35% and 31%, respectively, and resulted in decrease of the area of influence by 57% for particulate matters and 59% for ammonia.

  • Cities of China have been expanding rapidly during the last 10 years and the living environment of urban population developed highly making little difference with the developed nations. However, in the case of rural area, situation is totally different from the urban area. There are some cases where the quality of life in rural areas is retreating compared to the past. Agrarian cultures of the past are remained in the rural area with only older generations and no younger generations. The difference between the rural and the urban and the movement to the cities are increasing in a rapid speed. This led to the recognition of potential danger that lies on the agricultural societies which can demolish the economic development's sustainability. Therefore, in this study, basic information about the current Chinese elderly's house circumstances and to build new houses suited for the older generations will be provided. This can not only enhance the quality of the elder citizen's life, but also can be a meaningful research for the ideal construction of future Chinese agriculture.

  • A liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrrini (OV), is the major cause of the high incidence of cholangiocarcinoma in Thailand. The prevalence of OV infection remains high in various parts of the country, especially in Northeast Thailand and particularly in wetland rural areas where a large proportion of the community work in agriculture and continue the traditional practice of eating raw or uncooked cyprinoid fish products. The national control program seems to have had little impact in many of these areas, and it has been difficult to make precise assessments of the overall effectiveness of the program. This paper is the first report of prospective research project designed to monitor the impact of the national control program in rural communities located in a northeastern province and at high risk of OV infection. The participants in this initial survey were 1,569 villagers, aged 20-65 years, living in two subdistricts of Yasothon Province. Stool examinations showed that 38.68% were infected with OV. Males were slightly more likely to be infected than females, but the difference was not statistically significant. Infection was found to be positively associated with age in both males and females. The preliminary data indicate that the population selected for study is suitable for the purpose of the monitoring project.

  • Eight field-collected populations of the two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae (Koch) from apple orchards of different geographical areas were tested for resistance to seven acaricides by leaf disk method in comparison with a susceptible strain. Marked regional variations of susceptibility were observed. Only low to moderate resistance to azocyclotin, fenpropathrin, propargite, and abamectin was obtained. However, high resistance to dicofol, fenpyroxymate, and pyridaen by eight field-collected populations was produced. Resistance to dicofol and fenpyroxymate was widespread. All of the strains tested were susceptible to one or more o the acaricides used. These results indicate that careful selection of the chemical used against any population of the two-spotted spider mite might result in satisfactory control.

  • Solar-sharing, which is an agricultural photovoltaic system installing solar panels on the upper part of crop growing field, has especially drawn attention. Because paddy fields for cultivating crops are large flat areas, there have been various attempts to utilize solar energy for solar photovoltaic as well as growth of crops in agriculture. Solar-sharing was first proposed in Japan, and has been actively studied for optimization and practical uses. The domestic climate differs from the climate conditions in which the solar-sharing has been widely studied, therefore, it is required to develop the solar-sharing technology suitable for the domestic climate. In this study, a simulation model was developed to analyze the change of solar radiation resulted from the solar-sharing installation. Monthly solar illumination intensity and the change of illumination intensity according to the various conditions of solar panel installation were simulated. The results of monthly illumination analysis differed by altitude of the sun, which was related to season. In addition, it was analyzed that the monthly illumination decreased by up to 42% due to solar-sharing. Accordingly, it is recommended that solar-sharing should be installed as a way to maximize the efficiency of solar photovoltaic system while minimizing the decrease in solar radiation reaching the crops.

  • It is necessary to consider the suicide problem of the senior citizens according to their occupation rather than simply dividing seniors according to whether they live in rural or urban areas to seek countermeasures against suicide. This study examines factors that influence the suicidal intentions of senior citizens engaged in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries using the ranking probit model. As a result, the suicidal intention of senior citizens working in the agriculture, forestry, and fishery industries who felt lonely increased by 3.0%, but the intention to commit suicide decreased by 1.1%, when they value their work, and the intent to commit suicide decreased by 2.7% when they feel a strong sense of belonging to their region. The more family members or relatives they meet every day, the suicide intentions of senior citizens in the agricultural, forestry, and fishing industries decreased by 2.5%. However, since the number of families living together is decreasing every year, there is an inevitable limit on face-to-face contact with family members or relatives. Therefore, it is necessary to establish policy that links the loneliness of senior citizens in the agricultural, forestry, and fishing industries with the effort of public institutions to promote social values.

  • BACKGROUND: Soil bacteria play important roles in organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling during the non-growing season. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of soil management and chemical properties on the utilization of carbon sources by soil bacteria in paddy fields. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Biolog EcoPlate was used for analyzing community-level carbon substrate utilization profiles of soil bacteria. Soils were collected from the following three types of areas: plain, interface and mountain areas, which were tested to investigate the topology effect. The results of canonical correspondence analysis and Kendall rank correlation analysis showed that soil C/N ratio and NH4+ influenced utilization of carbon sources by bacteria. The utilization of carbohydrates and complex carbon sources were positively correlated with NH4+ concentration. Cultivated paddy fields were compared with adjacent abandoned fields to investigate the impact of cultivation cessation. The level of utilization of putrescine was lower in abandoned fields than in cultivated fields. Monoculture fields were compared with double cropping fields cultivated with barley to investigate the impact of winter crop cultivation. Cropping system altered bacterial use of carbon sources, as reflected by the enhanced utilization of 2-hydroxy benzoic acid under monoculture conditions. CONCLUSION: These results show that soil use intensity and topological characteristics have a minimal impact on soil bacterial functioning in relation to carbon substrate utilization. Moreover, soil chemical properties were found to be important factors determining the physiological profile of the soil bacterial community in paddy fields.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the infection status of intestinal parasites in pigs and beef cattle in rural areas of Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. From November 2009 to April 2010, a total of 241 fecal samples of pigs and beef cattle (136 and 105, respectively) were examined by direct smear and centrifugal sedimentation methods. The overall positive rates of intestinal parasites among pigs and beef cattle were 73.5% and 4.8%, respectively, and the double-infection rate was 10.3% in pigs. Of 136 specimens from pigs, Balantidium coli, Ascaris suum, and Entamoeba spp. infections were found in 88 (64.7%), 24 (17.6%), and 5 cases (3.7%), respectively. Of 105 beef cattle, Entamoeba spp. infections were detected in 5 cases (4.8%). From these results, it is shown that pigs raised on rural farms in Chungcheongnam-do had a high B. coli infection rate and a moderate A. suum infection rate. These results demonstrate that environmentally resistant cysts or eggs could be widespread on the farms examined, and thus an effective hygienic management system is needed to prevent them from serving as the source of infection for human beings.
