Adoption and Future Tasks of Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System for Agricultural and Rural Resources Conservation (농업·농촌자원 보전을 위한 국가중요농업유산 도입과 향후 과제)

  • The paradigm of agricultural and rural policies has shifted from food production and profitability to the competitiveness of rural areas through the discovery, grants and use of the agricultural and rural resources' potential value. This study aims to discover the value of the agriculture and rural resources and intend to offer the method for discovering resources and its value as the agricultural heritage. To this end, the functions and values of the agricultural and rural resource, the criteria and procedure of Globally and Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System which is leading institutions were investigated. The policy implications were proposed in the process and series of steps of discovery and evaluation of the pluralistic value of the agriculture and rural resources and agricultural heritage designation and management.

Efficient Determination of Genomic Variants from Sorghum Genetic Resources by HPC

  • In the digital age, a lot of agricultural R&D is based on data. However, genetic resources are still essential for basic research and agricultural development. Accordingly, many countries are making great efforts to secure various genetic resources. In Korea, the National Agrobiodiversity Center (NAC) has more than 270,000 plant genetic resources so far as part of its efforts. In order to efficiently use the resources for agricultural R&D, it is essential to determine the genotypes of the resources. For this, it is essential to build a system for mass genotyping. For this, sorghum were selected as a model crop considering the genome size, the high-quality reference genome, and the number of resources. To efficiently determine the genotype data from many genetic resources, we developed a GATK pipeline that works efficiently on HPC. The pipeline efficiently and rapidly determined 769 genotypes of 410 genetic resources. Going forward, our team will continue to work to determine genotypes of over a thousand sorghum resources, and the data will be released at the National Agricultural Biotechnology Information Center (NABIC) in order to be used in agricultural R&D.

Development of Rural Ecological Landscape Management Indicator considering Ecosystem Service Value (농촌경관 생태계서비스 가치를 고려한 관리지표 개발)

  • The interest on rural ecological landscape has recently grown on the part of policy makers for rural development. While considerable efforts and resources have been invested to preserve and utilize rural landscape, we still lack a systematic means to quantify and evaluate ecosystem service value of the rural landscape and management status. So this study suggests rural ecological landscape management indicator considering ecosystem service value. It consists of 28 criteria and 107 subcategories, which can be applied to rural village. And We have applied ecosystem service value assessment and resident's management status on three villages, Moondang village, Yonggye village, and Sesim village.

Increasing Sulforaphane Formation in Broccoli Sprouts by Radish Sprouts Additions

  • Cruciferous plants such as broccoli and radish contain glucosinolate, which is a bioactive precursor that is most often used in Korean foods and is unique as a food ingredient. In addition, it contains various other phytochemicals and is promising as a health-oriented food material. In particular, Sulforaphane is a hydrolyzate of the glucosinolate, which has a more beneficial effect on the human body. Glucosinolate may be hydrolyzed by enzymes called myrosinase, which is voluntarily possessed by cruciferous plants. However, the ESP(Epithiospecifier protein) in broccoli sprouts could acts competitively with myrosinase, and convert to the less bioactive sulforaphane nitrile form. Therefore, we improved the yielding of sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts with a new method. We induce inactivation of the ESP protein by heat treatment. At this time, a myrosinase was introduced from the radish sprout because myrosinase in broccoli sprouts is also denatured by heat treatment. According to the results, we have confirmed by GC / MS that formation of sulforaphane increases more than 7 fold using set heating and mixing conditions.
