The effect of job insecurity, employment type and monthly income on depressive symptom: analysis of Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging data

  • Background: In modern society, depression is serious issue that causes socioeconomic and family burden. To decrease the incidence of depression, risk factors should be identified and managed. Among many risk factors for depression, this study examined socioeconomic risk factors for depression. Methods: We utilized first (2006), second (2008), and third (2010)-wave data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Depressive symptom was measured with the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Short Form (CES-D-10) in the survey in 2008 and 2010. Three risk factors including job security, employment type and monthly income were measured in the survey in 2006. The association between risk factors and depressive symptom was analyzed by Cox proportional-hazard model. Results: We analyzed data from 1,105 workers and hazard ratios (HRs) for 3 risk factors were significant entirely. In addition, regular worker with high income group is the most vulnerable group of poor job insecurity on depression among male workers (HR: 1.73; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-2.81). Finally, HRs for 7 groups who had at least 1 risk factor had higher HRs compared to groups who had no risk factors after stratifying 3 risk factors. In the analysis, significantly vulnerable groups were total 5 groups and the group who had highest HR was temporary/daily workers with poor job security (HR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.36-4.64). The results concerning women, regardless of job type, were non-significant. Conclusions: This study presented one or more risk factors among poor job security, low income, temporary/daily employment type increase hazard for depressive symptom in 2 or 4 years after the exposure. These results inform policy to screen for and protect against the risk of depression in vulnerable groups.

양돈장 작업환경 모니터링을 위한 웨어러블 장비개발 (Development of Wearable Device for Monitoring Working Environment in Pig House)

  • Enclosed pig house are creating an environment with high concentrations of gas and dust. Poor conditions in pig farms reduce pig weight and increase disease and accidents for livestock workers. In the pig house, the high concentration of harmful gas may cause asphyxiation accidents to workers and chronic respiratory disease by long-term exposure. As pig farm workers have been aging and feminized, the damage to the health of the harsh environment is getting serious, and real-time monitoring is needed to prevent the damage. However, most of the measuring devices related to humidity, harmful gas, and fine dust except temperature sensors are exposed to high concentrations of gas and dust inside pig house and are difficult to withstand for a long time. The purpose of this study is to develop an wearable based device to monitor the hazardous environment exposed to workers working in pig farms. Based on the field monitoring and previous researches, the measurement range and basic specifications of the equipment were selected, and wearable based device was designed in terms of utilization, economic efficiency, size and communication performance. Selected H2S and NH3 sensors showed the average error of 5.3% comparing to standard gas concentrations. The measured data can be used to manage the working environment according to the worker's location and to obtain basic data for work safety warning.

  • 식품제조업은 다른 제조업종에 비해 상대적으로 남성 대비 여성 재해자의 수가 많은 편이며 그 수는 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 고령화 사회로 접어듦에 따라 재해연령 또한 높아지고 있다. 이는 식품제조업종에서도 뚜렷이 나타나고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 식품제조업의 소규모 사업장에서 연령 및 성별에 따른 근로자들의 안전·보건 인식에 대하여 설문조사를 실시하였으며. 그중 고령 여성 근로자들에 초점을 맞추어 재해 특성을 분석해 재해율이 감소할 방안을 제시하고자 한다.

숙련 외국인 어선원 확보를 위한 제도 개선 방안 : 연근해 어업을 중심으로 (Policy Suggestions to Retain Skilled Migrant Fishermen in Korea : Focus on Offshore Fishing )

  • With the restriction of foreigners' entry into Korea due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fishery industry faced significant challenges in supplying migrant workers. In response to this, there is growing interest in methods that could facilitate the stable employment of migrant workers. This paper investigates whether the current system used for the employment of migrant workers in the fishery industry, which is highly dependent on them, adequately performs its function of providing a stable and skilled workforce amid the intensified labor shortage resulting from decreasing numbers of households with employment in the fishery and the aging Korean fishermen. To this end, past studies and government documents pertaining to the current system were analyzed, and a survey targeting the owners of offshore fishing boats that employ migrant workers was conducted. A total of 147 owners of fishing boats responded to the survey, and the data of 499 migrant workers employed by them were used for the analysis. The analysis indicated that the migrant fishermen had difficulty in acquiring minimum scores for the change of visa status according to the criteria for the Skilled Worker Points System. Furthermore, distinct differences were found between the characteristics and working conditions of migrant workers employed through the Employment Permit System (EPS) and the Foreign Seamen System. Based on this result, this paper suggests the reorganization of the skilled migrant worker system in the fishery industry and the expansion of the regional specialized visa pilot project.

한국 원자력 인력의 고령화와 인력정책의 함의: 원자력 관련기관 인력통계 분석 (Aging of Korean Nuclear Manpower and Implications of Manpower Policy: Statistical Analysis on Nuclear Organizations)

  • 원자력 인력 고령화는 원전 수출에 따른 새로운 인력 수요 증가에 못지 않는 중요한 인력 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 고령화된 숙련 전문인력의 대거 퇴직에 따른 고급 인력난과 원자력 기술능력 약화는 한국 원자력의 경쟁력을 크게 약화시킬 수 있다. 본 연구는 한국 원자력 관련 기관 및 업체들에 대해 2001년과 2010년 국내원자력 기관의 인력 현황에 대한 통계조사에 근거하여 약 10년의 기간 동안 원자력 인력 변동 추이 등의 인력 현황 통계자료를 활용했다. 이를 토대로 조사대상 기관별로 그리고 통합적으로 원자력 인력의 고령화 수준을 검토한다. 그리고 원자력 인력 고령화 문제에 대비하기 위한 인력 충원의 방향과 한국 원자력 인력 수급의 문제점을 해소해 나가기 위한 대응방안을 제시할 것이다.

Assessment of Work Ability of Korean Workers in the Shipbuilding Industry using FIOH Questionnaire

  • Objective: The goal of this study was to assess work ability of Korean workers in the shipbuilding industry. Background: Old age is associated with inevitable time-dependent losses in physical capabilities. However the maintenance of physical capabilities is essential for continuing independence in old age. The work ability index(WAI) was constructed to reveal how well a worker is able to perform his or her work. Method: The WAI is a kind of survey methods developed to estimate the work capacity of aged workers by the Finish Institute of Occupational Health(FIOH) in 1998. The difference of the WAI between groups in each category was tested using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and the relationship between the WAI and the workers' ages was tested by the Correlation test. Results: This study surveyed 2,709 persons working in the shipbuilding industry in Korea. The average WAI score for all workers was 40.0 denoting a Good Level. Also, workers in the shipbuilding industry had lower work ability, as compared to the results of other industries. The WAI was analyzed for different age groups(${\leq}29$; 30~34; 35~39; 40~44; 45~49; 50~54; ${\geq}55$). The results of Kruskal-Wallis test showed that significant difference was identified on the effect of aging(p<0.05). Conclusion: Advanced countries like the Finland showed decreasing tendency in good and excellent levels as aged, but there was no decreasing tendency in Korean population. The results may be attributable to the general characteristics of Korean society, such as poor social security and burden caused by role of the patriarch. It may bring forth higher work ability in aged population even their physical condition is getting worse. Application: This finding could be used for developing more accurate assessment tool of work ability for working environment.

Development of Advanced Management System for Social Infrastructures - Advanced Management System of Waste Disposal Facilities as an Example -

  • Infrastructures in Japan constructed mostly in high economic growth period become elder & elder, and the troubles & accidents caused by the aging increase. Though investment for the renewal is necessary, the shortage of public fund delays the action. Besides, we expect the decrease of the population that means the decrease of the engineers who take care of social infrastructures. Thus, it is necessary for us to develop Advanced Management system of social Infrastructures (AMI) to realize the efficient and economical operation. Our concept of AMI consists of using ICT, PI (Public Involvement) and establishment of O&M diagnosis system. We expect AMI will support to realize the appropriate repairing, preventive maintenance based on the actual performance, accidents & dangerous experience and education & training of the workers. In this paper, development of AMI for the waste disposal facility as a first example of infrastructures will be shown.

인구 고령화와 임금구조: 1990년대 이후 한국 남성 근로자의 세대규모효과에 대한 실증분석 (Population Aging and Wage Structure: An Empirical Study of Cohort Size Effect on Korean Male Worker since 1990)

  • 최근 우리나라는 고령화가 급속도로 진전되면서 향후 생산가능인구의 감소와 더불어 인구구조, 특히 연령구조(age structure) 또한 급격한 변화를 겪을 것으로 예상되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 이러한 인구구조의 변화가 임금구조에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 연령별 세대규모(cohort size)에 초점을 맞추어 세대규모효과로 인해 연령-임금 프로파일이 어떻게 변모하였는지를 분석하였다. 실증분석은 Wright(1991)의 모형을 기초로 노동부의 '임금구조기본통계조사' 원자료($1990년{\sim}2006$년)의 남성 근로자 데이터를 활용한 Weighted OLS 회귀분석으로 이루어졌다. 추정결과에서는 고졸 근로자 및 대졸이상 고학력 근로자에게서 세대규모효과가 발견되었는데, 고졸 근로자의 경우 기존 Welch(1979)나 Wright(1991)의 연구와 유사한 결과가 나타났지만, 대졸이상 근로자의 경우 반대로 정(+)의 신규진입효과와 부(-)의 지속효과가 나타났다. 따라서 고졸 근로자는 임금수준에서 세대규모로 인한 불이익을 받는 반면, 고학력 취업자의 경우 최근 청년실업 및 취업난의 상황에도 불구하고 상대적으로 작은 세대규모로 인해 임금수준에서 이득을 보고 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 이는 기존의 연구가 주로 노동수요 측면에 치우쳐 있다는 점에서 노동공급측면에서 인구 고령화에 따른 인구구조의 변화에 관심을 둔 연구가 필요하다는 것을 시사한다.

리브라스 거푸집의 적용을 위한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Application of Lib-lath Form)

  • In order for concrete as a basic material constituting reinforced concrete structure to meet the required performance, it is necessary to satisfy various requirements in concrete construction. Among them, form work has significant effects not only on the process of molding fresh concrete but also on the quality and performance of hardened concrete. Recently, the decrease and aging of form workers is becoming a great problem in the construction industry and, as a result, it is required to rationalize form works and reduce labor costs for employing form workers. Because form construction methods decide the type of form according to required performance, it is necessary to develop various form construction methods and examine their performance. Thus the present study purposed to expand the scope of application of form construction methods and, for this purpose, investigated the basic characteristics of rib- lath form and presented a system form construction method.

지하절 종사자의 작업능력과 직무스트레스 평가에 관한 연구 (The Evaluation of Work Ability and Job Stress for Subway Worker)

  • Work ability and job stress have become the important issues in Korean workplace recently. This study researched work ability and job stress and also analyzed correlation with work ability and job stress using the Work Ability Index and the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire against 742 subway workers. As the results, Work ability in subway workers was good in general. The relation between job stress and job type showed statistical significance (p<0.05). The relation between job stress and diseases showed statistical significance in musculoskeletal disorders(p<0.05), heart disease, and gastrointestinal disease. The correlations between work ability and job stress showed statistical significance in job demand and social support(p<0.05). The result of this study could be useful to manage the work ability of aging worker and the job stress in industry.
