  • The purpose of this study is to present a desirable model of memorial rites on the basis of their essential significance, as recognized by middle-aged housewives. This study was based on an interview survey that was conducted with 40 housewives in their 40's and 50's who live in Seoul. The interviews were carried out from August 1, 2009 to October 20, 2009, using a semi-structured questionnaire. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the middle-aged housewives recognized the significance of memorial rites as an expression of their sincerity, or as a cultural demonstration of affection commemorating their ancestors. Secondly, the housewives mentioned possible changes to different memorial rites depending on the will of their children's generation. These included a grafting of different memorial rites between religions, or a shift of the memorial rites to a religious institution or a memorial facility, in addition to maintaining the current practice in one's home. Thirdly, we proposed memorial rites that are carried out in one's home (Confucian, Christian, Confucian plus Catholic, or Confucian plus Buddhist style), a religious institution (Catholic church or Buddhist temple), and a memorial facility (arboretum, graveyard or enshrine facility).

As Korea is about to enter into the aged society, it is important to investigate the factors that cause an accident in the welfare facilities for the aged and establish the barrier-free construction standards. The accident influence factors include facility environmental, physical functional, socio demographic and socio psychological factors. In terms of the verification tools, there are Facility Evaluation Index, FIM, MMSE-K and General Feature. In terms of analysis method, in addition, there are real number, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and logistic regression. In conclusion, this paper attempts to reveal correlations among the accident influence factors using the Facility Evaluation Standards (115 items in total) for facility environmental factor, FIM (3 items) for physical functional factor, MMSE-K (6 items) for socio psychological factor and questionnaire (5 items) for socio demographic factor.

This study was conducted to identify the constructs of the servicescapes of senior welfare facility and to draw analysis indicators of it. For this, we performed literature review based on domestic & foreign government guide, service marketing theory and interior architectural results concerning the physical environment of the senior welfare facility. The result of this study showed as follows: servicescapes of the senior welfare facility could be explained as "a whole set of physical environment to support a variety of services provided by the senior welfare facility for the elderly or services of the kind of tangible clues". Analysis indicators of the senior welfare facility's servicescape could be explained as five factors: safety factor, functional factor, aesthetic factor, ambient factor and social factor. In addition we developed 37 pieces of detailed factors referred to five factors. The evaluation and verification of analysis indicators was carried out through 8 experts in-depth interviews. We inspected importance factor using a 5-point Likert scale, therefore safety factor was 4.41, functional factor was 4.27, aesthetic factor was 3.66, ambient factor was 4.20 and social factor was 4.25. More than anything else, in this study, there is a sense that it has established the concept of servicescape adapted to the senior welfare facility and contained a social element between the employees and the physical environment. • The Japanese elderly welfare policy has focused on facility policy for the aged and preventive care service for healthy elderly people. This paper has conducted a comparative analysis on Geriatric Gealth Services Facility and Special Nursing Home for the Elderly. For this, each service function has been divided into six categories; daily life / nursing and caring / medical service / management / supply / miscellaneous. Then the change in real structure by category has been analyzed through a plan analysis on case facilities. In the Geriatric Health Services Facility, the biggest change was observed in 'livelihood' among six categories. In the Special Nursing Home for the Elderly, 'the nursing and care parts' and 'medical service part' are decreased since 1999. At that time, the facilities started to be individualized and divided into a unit. To pursue home-like care instead of unit care, there was a change in construction planning to help the aged with dementia live a self-sufficient life.

  • Japan is a super-aged society where the proportion of the people aged over 65 is exceeded 20%. Therefore, there are many accidents that occur in long-term care facilities in Japan, and there are many civil litigations. The Japanese court has acknowledged in many cases that the long-term facility is responsible for the damage to the elderly who is injured in the facility. The cases can be divided into ① tumbling down, ② wandering, ③ suffocation, ④ bedsore, and ⑤ accidents among the facility-users. In most cases, the court found that the facility violated its obligation to protect their users. This is not only the case where the manager or the employee of the facility violates the obligation to watch and care for the elderly, but in some cases, the failure to maintain the human and material system itself is recognized. The basis for such judgment is whether the facility can predict the possibility of an accident and whether the facility has taken measures to prevent accidents. Also, the Japanese court recognizes the transfer of burden of proof in order to expedite the victims' rights. However, the liability of the facility for damages should not be so heavy that it would be hesitant to allow a person to enter the facility and make a contract.
