  • Effect of CaO addition on age hardening response has been studied by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis in AZ91 and CaO-containing ECO-AZ91 alloys. After solution treatment, the ${\beta}$($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) phase formed during solidification mostly disappeared in the microstructure in the AZ91 alloy, whereas numerous ${\beta}$ precipitates containing Ca were still observed in the ECO-AZ91 alloy due to its enhanced thermal stability. The ECO-AZ91 alloy showed the delayed peak aging time and higher peak hardness compared with those of the AZ91 alloy. The activation energies for ${\beta}$ precipitation calculated by means of Kissinger method increased from 71.4 to 85.6 kJ/mole by the addition of CaO, which implies that CaO plays a role in reducing ${\beta}$ precipitation rate in the AZ91 alloy.

  • In this work, the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent damping capacities of Mg-5%Sn alloy have been investigated as a function of its age-hardening response. The hardness increased with an increase in aging time, reached a peak value after 48 h, and then it gradually decreased. The damping capacities of the Mg-5%Sn alloy exhibited a decreasing tendency in the order of solution-treated, under-aged, peakaged, and over-aged states in the strain-amplitude dependent region, whereas they increased continuously with aging time in the strain-amplitude independent region. The microstructural examination during aging revealed that the lower concentration of Sn solutes in the α-(Mg) matrix and the lower density of the Mg2Sn precipitate particles may well be the crucial factors for better damping values in the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent regions, respectively.

  • Effects of Si and Ca additions on the mechanical properties of AM60 based Mg alloys have been investigated. Hardness of the AM60 based Mg alloys reached a maximum value after aging for approximately 33 hours but the amount of hardness increase was negligible. The poor age hardening response of the alloys was due to low Al content, which implies that Al content must be >6 wt.% to observe age hardening effect. The tensile and yield strength increased with increasing Al, Si, and Ca content but elongation decreased with increasing Al and Si content. The best mechanical properties obtained in AM 40-2.5Si-0.2Ca alloy after T4 heat treatment were as follows; tensile strength 193.4 MPa, yield strength 79.2 MPa, and elongation 11.2%. High temperature property obtained from creep test was also improved by introducing $Mg_2Si$ which has high hardness, high melting temperature and low thermal expansion coefficient.

  • A study was conducted to examine the effects of In addition on the precipitation behaviors of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu alloy by differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy and micro-hardness tester. DSC analysis was measured over the temperature range of $25{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $2{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min. The heat evolution peaks due to the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase shift to higher temperature and the peaks to $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases shift to lower temperature by In addition. From this result, it was proved that the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase is suppresed whereas that of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases are accelerated by the In addition of 0.15wt%. The age hardening curve aged at $190^{\circ}C$ showed that the In bearing alloy(alloy B) has more faster age hardening response and a higher peak hardness than In-free alloy(alloy A), attributed to the fine and homogeneous distribution of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases. The activation energies for the formation of ${\delta}$'phase in In-free and In-bearing alloys are 22.3kcal/mol and 18.6kcal/mol, respectively. Those for $T_1(+{\theta}^{\prime})$ phase of In-free and In-bearing alloys are 24.3 and 37.5kcal/mol, respectively. Quenched-in excess vacancies play an important role to the formation of precipitates.

  • This study investigates the nano/microstructure, the aging response, and the mechanical/tribological properties of the eutectic regions in rheoformed A356 alloy-T5 parts using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined with optical microscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM). Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers. The loading curve for the eutectic region was more irregular than that of the primary Al region due to the presence of various particles of varying strength. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in the rheoformed A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 72 h) were investigated. Both Victors hardness $(H_v)$ and indentation $(H_{IT})$ test results showed a similar trend of aging curves, and the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h. A remarkable size-dependence of the tests was found.

  • The present study aims to investigate the influence of Zn addition on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-9%Al and Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloys. To obtain large DPs volume fractions in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688 K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 413 K for 48 h. The aged Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloy had higher DPs content than the Mg-9%Al alloy, indicating that the Zn addition plays a beneficial role in enhancing age-hardening response. The DPs in the Zn-containing alloy possessed the higher hardness than those of the Zn-free alloy. Microstructural examination revealed that the increased hardness of the DPs resulting from the Zn addition is closely associated with the lower α-(Mg)/β(Mg17Al12) interlamellar spacing and the higher volume fraction of β phase layer of the DPs.

  • In this paper the viscoelastic responses of four experimental steel-concrete composite beams subjected to highly variable environmental conditions are investigated by means of a finite element (FE) model. Concrete specimens submitted to stepped stress changes are also evaluated to validate the current formulations. Here, two well-known approaches commonly used to solve the viscoelastic constitutive relationship for concrete are employed. The first approach directly solves the integral-type form of the constitutive equation at the macroscopic level, in which aging is included by updating material properties. The second approach is postulated from a rate-type law based on an age-independent Generalized Kelvin rheological model together with Solidification Theory, using a micromechanical based approach. Thus, conceptually both approaches include concrete hardening in two different manners. The aim of this work is to compare and analyze the numerical prediction in terms of long-term deflections of the studied specimens according to both approaches. To accomplish this goal, the performance of several well-known model codes for concrete creep and shrinkage such as ACI 209, CEB-MC90, CEB-MC99, B3, GL 2000 and FIB-2010 are evaluated by means of statistical bias indicators. It is shown that both approaches with minor differences acceptably match the long-term experimental deflection and are able to capture complex oscillatory responses due to variable temperature and relative humidity. Nevertheless, the use of an age-independent scheme as proposed by Solidification Theory may be computationally more advantageous.

  • The nano/microstructure, the aging response (in T5 heat treatment), and the mechanical/tribological properties of the eutectic regions in squeeze-cast A356 alloy were investigated using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined wit optical microscopy and atomic force microscope(AFM). Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers. The loading curve for the eutectic region was more irregular than that of the primary Al region due to the presence of various particles of varying strength. In addition, the eutectic region showed lower pile-up and higher elastic recovery than the primary Al region. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in the squeeze-cast A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times(0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36 and 72 h) were investigated. As the aging time increased, acicular Si particles in the eutectic regions gradually came to a fine structure. Both Vickers hardness ($H_V$) and indentation ($H_{IT}$) test results showed almost the same trend of aging curves, and the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h. A remarkable size-dependence of the tests was found. The friction coefficient for the eutectic region was lower than that for the primary Al region.
