Tissue Distribution of $TiO_2$ Nanoparticles in Mice after Oral Administration, and Skin Treatment (마우스 경구 및 경피투여에 의한 $TiO_2$ 나노입자의 체내분포)

  • The tissue distribution of $TiO_2$, nanopaprticles was investigated in mice after oral administration, and skin treatment. Male mice were treated with the dose of 5 g/kg of $TiO_2$ for three consecutive days and sacrificed at 24 hours after the last administration. As results, the orally administered $TiO_2$ nanoparticels were shown to be distributed in the testis, lung, and brain at 24 hours after the last treatment. Kidney does not seem to be the main target of $TiO_2$ nanoparticle distribution. It means that $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (17 nm) are easily absorbed through entero-gastric system and may cause toxicity in brain, lung, and reproductive organs. The distribution of skin treatment showed the same pattern like oral administration.

  • Tissue distribution of $SiO_2$ nanopaprticles was investigated in mice after oral administration or skin treatment. ICR Male mice were treated with $SiO_2$ nanoparticles 2.5 g/kg/day for five consecutive days and sacrificed at 24 hours after the last administration. As results, the orally administered $SiO_2$ nanoparticels were distributed in the testis and kidney but not in lung at 24 hours after the last treatment. In case of skin treatment, $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were distributed to lung as well as testis, brain, kidney and liver. The results suggested that $SiO_2$ nanoparticles (12 nm) are easily absorbed through entero-gastric system or skin.

  • Objective : To evaluate the effectiveness of Novalis shaped beam radiation treatment as an adjuvant treatment in patients with craniopharyngiomas. Methods : We reviewed 8 patients with craniopharyngiomas who had recurring tumors during follow-up or had residual lesions after primary surgery. Three of 8 patients were found to have recurrence after gross total excision of the tumor and 5 patents had residual lesions after subtotal resection. All patients were treated with fractionated stereotactic radiation treatment[FSRT] using Novalis system. The mean age of patients was 28 years [range $16{\sim}52$]. The median irradiation dose per fraction was 17Gy [range $1.7{\sim}2.0$]. The median fraction number was 23 [range $15{\sim}25$], and the median total dose was 39.1 Gy [range $25.5{\sim}42.5$]. Follow-up included MR imaging, and ophthalmologic and endocrine examinations. Results : The median follow-up period was 23 months [range $12{\sim}43$]. The local tumor control rate was 87.5%. One patient had a recurring tumor, in which cystic change developed 2 months after FSRT. Four patients showed a decrease in size of their tumor, while 3 patients remained stable. Seven out of 8 patients had hormonal dysfunction that remained unchanged after initial surgery. No further progression of visual impairment was observed. Conclusion : FSRT using Novais system is effective and safe for the treatment of recurring or residual craniopharyngiomas without toxicity like optic neuropathy.

Efficacy of Pharmacopuncture for Treating Children with Physical Disabilities in Uzbekistan

  • Objective: This research was performed to investigate the efficacy of complex rehabilitation combined with pharmacopuncture treatment for the children with neuromotor system diseases. Methods: Fifty (50) patients aged from 5 to 15 yr old were compared. Twenty (20) patients received conventional treatments and complex rehabilitation as a control group, and fifty (50) patients received complex rehabilitation with pharmacopuncture. At their first visits, the patients had checkups and neurological scales, and after 10 days of pharmacopuncture treatments and 55 days of rehabilitation, they also took neurological scales. We studied the pre and post effects of the treatment group. Results: The number of patients with ankle joint disorder and contracture, knee joint contracture, steppage, horsey hoof, shoulder weakness and contracture, radio-carpal joint disorder and contracture, arm hypotrophia, arm atrophia, leg hypotrophia and total atrophia decreased after treatments. Conclusion: This study showed the efficacy of pharmacopuncture combined with complex rehabilitation for the treatment of neuromotor system diseases.

A Comparative Study on Improvement of Bell's Palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome According to Treatment Duration (Bell's Palsy와 Ramsay Hunt Syndrome 환자군의 치료 기간에 따른 호전도의 비교 연구)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is comparing the improvement of Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt syndrome according to treatment duration. Methods : The 11cases diagnosed as Ramsay hunt syndrome and 30cases of Bell's palsy who visited Cheong-ju Oriental Medical hospital from February 2006 to June 2008 were evaluated. We used Yanagihara's unweighted Grading System to confirm the improvement. Results : In the analysis of cause, except the "none", the most common cause was "Overwork" in both two group. After 5-day treatment the score was getting worse but after 10-day treatment score was improved in both group. The improvement of Bell's palsy group was better than that of Ramsay hunt syndrome group after 5-day and 10-day treatment, but there was no significance. Conclusions : In comparison of Yanagihara's unweighted grading score checked before treatment, after 5-day, 10-day and 15-day treatment between Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt sundrome, there was no statistical significant difference.

  • After etching Al-Cu alloy films using $SiCl_4/Cl_2/He/CHF_3$ plasma, a corrosion phenomenon on the metal surface has been studied with XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and SEM (Scanning electron microscopy). In Al-Cu alloy system, the corrosion occurs rapidly on the etched surface by residual chlorine atoms. To prevent the corrosion, the $SF_6$ plasma treatment subsequent to the etch has been carried out. A passivation layer is formed by fluorine-related compounds on etched Al-Cu alloy surface after $SF_6$ treatment, and the layer suppresses effectively the corrosion on the surface as the RF power of $SF_6$ treatment increases. The corrosion could be suppressed successfully with $SF_6$ treatment in the RF power of 150watts.

  • These experiments were conducted to examine the effects of theophylline, pentoxifylline and heparin on frozen-thawed Hanwoo sperm for enhancing motility and viability of sperm. Frozen-thawed semen collected from one bull was treated in TALP(tyrode-albuminlactate-pyruvate) containing varous concentrations of theophylline and pentoxifylline. After incubated at 5% CO2 in air atmosphere for 6 hours, the motility of sperm after the treatments was characterized by CASA(computer aided semen analysis) system. When monitored notility(MOT) and curvilinear velocity(VCL), theophylline and pentoxifylline exerted their optimal action at the concentration of 30 mM and 3 mM, respectively. No difference of sperm motility was observed when the sperm was treated with both substances compared with a single treatment of each substance. Comparison was then made for evaluating the effect of theophylline and / or pentoxiophylline on the motility and viability of significant treatment effects of each substance, high MOT and VCL values were detected in sperm treated with theophylline. In the case of sperm viability examined by an eosin-nigrosin staining, however, a significant decrease was found after the combined treatment of theophylline+pentoxyphilline than after the treatment with heparin alone or no treatment(P<0.05). In conclusion, theophylline, pentoxiphylline or heparin can be used for enhancing the motional characteristics and viability of frozen thawed Hanwoo semen. Considering characteristics of these substances, theophyline may be useful in the artificial insemination system, which requires vigorous sperm motility. While, heparin supporting sperm viability in vitro can be effectively used for improving in vitro-fertilization system.

A study about treatment for water treatment residual sludge using submerged membrane system (침지식 막여과 공정을 이용한 정수장 배출수 처리에 관한 연구)

  • Various treatment system for residuals have applied to save water resources, but most of them were not be satisfied with legal standard consistently. In this study, submerged membrane treatment system was operated to treat water treatment plant residuals and operation parameters was evaluated. Result of this experiment, high concentration organic matters contributed to high increase Transmembrane pressure(TMP) of membrane system(from 0.05 bar to 0.35 bar). And backwash process was effective to stabilize membrane system operation. After Cleaning-In-Place(CIP), permeability was recovered about 100 % from first operation condition. Inorganic matters (Fe, Mn, Al, Ca, Mg) were not effective membrane filtration performance. The quality of residual treatment was satisfied with drinking water quality standard and a treated water from that system was suitable for water reuse.

A Study on Smart Medical Treatment System and Security (스마트 진료시스템과 보안에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the development of communications technology, it is now possible to be offered online from remote places. This kind of communications technology can be applied to the medical field. The medical treatment appointments in hospitals can be its typical example. But still, in most of hospitals, patient or guardian have to physically visit or call to the hospital to set up an appointment for the medical treatment. In addition, they have to wait in line in order to pay after receiving the medical treatment. The patient or guardian, after paying, receive a paper prescription and they go to a nearby pharmacy to take the medicines. They must wait in line again there in order to receive the medicine from the pharmacy. In this paper, we would like to suggest a smart medical treatment system in order to solve the problems discussed above. With this proposed system, the user will be able to make an appointment, make payments and receive medication quickly and easily without spending extra time. Also, there will be no need for paper prescriptions with this system. We discuss about the security of medical information for this proposed smart medical treatment system proposed.
