  • Micro planar type liquid propellant thruster was fabricated by MEMS manufacturing process for micro/nano satellites applications. 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide was used as propellant and for propellant decomposition, Pt/Al2O3 was used as catalyst. Micro thruster structure was made by 5 photosensitive glasses patterned with thruster component profiles. Objective thrust was 50 mN and required hydrogen peroxide mass flow was 2.1 ml/min, which was supplied by syringe pump and teflon tube in experimental test. Performance test said that average steady thrust was approximately 30 mN, around 60% of objective thrust, and transient time was about 5 sec. It is estimated that extended response time was due to high thermal energy loss of micro scale thruster and low enthalpy input by propellant mass flow.

  • KARI is developing Image Data Acquisition and Control System (IDACS) for pre-processing meteorological and ocean data acquired on geostationary orbit. This paper describes the functions and architecture of IDACS and gives its operation policy including backup operation to overcome limitation of single-configured antenna system. The COMS IDACS provides the capability to receive the raw sensor data and disseminate processed MI data to users via a satellite. From the processed image data, users can produce a set of meteorological and ocean products for a wide range of applications. Most of IDACS subsystems are being developed by Korean technologies and experience acquired from previous projects. In case of COMS geometric correction software module, as it is closely dependent on the characteristics of imagers and spacecraft bus system, it is being co-developed with overseas prime contractor who develops spacecraft bus system.

  • The Compact Airborne Imaging Spectrometer System (CAISS) was jointly designed and developed as the hyperspectral imaging system by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and ELOP inc., Israel. The primary mission of the CAISS is to acquire and provide full contiguous spectral information with high quality spectral and high spatial resolution for advanced applications in the field of remote sensing. The CAISS consists of six physical units; the camera system, the gyro-stabilized mount, the jig, the GPS/INS, the power inverter and distributor, and the operating system. These subsystems shall be tested and verified in the laboratory before the flight. Especially the camera system of the CAISS shall be calibrated and validated with the calibration equipments such as the integrated sphere and spectral lamps. To improve data quality and availability, it is the most important to understand the mechanism of hyperspectral imaging system and the radiometric and spectral characteristics. This paper presents the major characteristics of camera system on the CAISS and summarizes the results of radiometric and spectral experiment during preliminary system verification.

  • The mission of the EO(electro-optical) based low earth orbit satellite is provision of the high-resolution images required for GIS(Geographical Information Systems) establishment and the applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring. AEISS(Advanced Earth Imaging Sensor System) which is the main payload on the satellite consists of EOS(electro-optical subsystem) and PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Sub-system). IDHU(Image Data Handling Unit) which is one of the major unit in PDTS is capable of compression, storage, encryption and encoding. In this paper, the payload system of the EO based satellite is briefly introduced and the influence of the compression on AEISS is analyzed.

  • A high temperature adhesive development which is crosslinked in low temperature is necessary for aerospace application because of thermal expansion mismatches of various substrates. For this purpose, we have designed and fabricated several formulations with high temperature epoxy resins, crosslinkers and additives considering various working conditions and high service temperature. As a result, some formulations showed higher adhesive strengths than Hysol EA 9394/C2 which is widely used for aerospace applications. We also have studied and summarized the mechanical properties of the best development adhesive in both room and high temperatures.

  • Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) is widely used to handle the advanced design in several engineering applications. Such applications are commonly simulation-based, in order to capture the physics of the phenomena under study. This framework demands fast optimization algorithms as well as trustworthy numerical analyses, and a synergic integration between the two is required to obtain an efficient design process. In order to meet these needs, an adaptive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver and a fast optimization algorithm have been developed and combined by the authors. The CFD solver is based on a high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretization while the optimization algorithm is a high-performance version of the Artificial Bee Colony method. In this work, they are used to address a typical aero-mechanical problem encountered in turbomachinery design. Interesting achievements in the considered test case are illustrated, highlighting the potential applicability of the proposed approach to other engineering problems.

  • This paper reviews most of the research done in the field of tensile buckling characteristics pertaining to aerospace structural elements with special attention to local buckling and parametric excitation due to periodic loading on plate and shell elements. The concepts of buckling in aerospace structures appear as the result of the application of a global compressive applied load or shear load. A less usual situation is the case, in which a global tensile stress creates buckling instability and the formation of complex spatial buckling pattern. In contrast to the case of a pure compression or shear load, here the applied macroscopic load has no compressive component and is thus globally stabilizing. The instability stems from a local compressive stress induced by the presence of a defect, such as a crack or a hole, due to partial or non-uniform applied load at the far end. This is referred to as tensile buckling. This paper discusses all aspects of tensile buckling, theoretical and experimental. Its far reaching applications causing local instability in aerospace structural components are discussed. The important effects on dynamic stability behaviour under locally induced periodic compression have been identified and influences of various parameters are discussed. Experimental results on simple and combination resonance characteristics on plate structures due to tensile buckling effects are elaborated.

  • The aircraft manufacturers are constantly driving to reduce manufacturing lead times and cost at the same time as the product complexity increases and technology continues to change. Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) is a solution that allows the aviation industry to manage their avionics complexity. IMA defines an integrated system architecture that preserves the fault containment and 'separation of concerns' properties of the federated architectures. In software side, the air transport industry has developed ARINC 653 specification as a standardized Real Time Operating System (RTOS) interface definition for IMA. It allows hosting multiple applications of different software levels on the same hardware in the context of IMA architecture. This paper describes a study that provided the avionics software design for separation of fault and backup of core function to reduce workload of pilot with cost efficiency.
