  • The aims of this study is to realize the structural design for development of a medium scale E-glass/epoxy composite wind turbine blade for a 750KW class horizontal axis wind turbine system. In this study, the various load cases specified by the IEC61400-1 international specification and GL Regulations for the wind energy conversion system were considered, and a specific composite structure configuration which can effectively endure various loads such as aerodynamic and centrifugal loads, loads due to accumulation of ice, hygro-thermal and mechanical loads was proposed. In order to evaluate the structure, the structural analysis for the composite wind turbine blade were peformed using tile finite element method(FEM). In the structural design, the acceptable blade structural configuration was determined through the parametric studies, and the most dominant design parameters were confirmed. In the stress analysis using the FEM, it was confirmed that the blade structure was safe and stable in any various load cases Moreover the safety of the blade root joint with insert bolts, newly devised in this study, was checked against the design fond and the fatigue.

  • In order to design a shear coaxial injector of solid particles for underwater propulsion system, basic experiments on gas-liquid shear coaxial injector are necessary. In the gas-liquid coaxial injector self-pulsation usually occurs with an intense scream. When self-pulsation occurs, mass flow rate oscillation and intense scream are detected by the interactions between the liquid and gas phase. Self-pulsation must be suppressed since this oscillation may cause combustion instabilities. Considerable research has been conducted on self-pulsation characteristics, but these researches are conducted in swirl coaxial injector. The main objective of this research is to understand the characteristics of self-pulsation in shear coaxial injector and reveal the mechanism of the phenomenon. Toward this object, self-pulsation frequency and spray patterns are measured by laser diagnostics and indirect photography. The self-pulsation characteristics of shear coaxial injector are studied with various injection conditions, such as the pressure drop of liquid and gas phase, and recess ratio. It was found that the frequency of the self-pulsation is proportional to the liquid and gas Reynolds number, and proportional to the L/d.

  • This paper deals with predicting comparable mechanical properties of laminated composite plates. The stiffness of an equivalent anisotropic composite plate is derived based on classical lamination theory. A novel failure criterion is defined to describe the failure behaviour of laminated composite plates based on micro-mechanics failure criteria. Finally, the theory's validation of finite element analysis results was verified. We concluded that this theory is very suitable for failure analysis of laminated composite plates for aerospace applications due to their relative simplicity and computational efficiency.

  • IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system is candidates which can solve the environmental problems including global warming, since it can be easily combined with CCS(Carbon Capture System). In this research, combustion instability characteristics were studied at various fuel which are composed of $H_2/CH_4/CO$ mixture. Mode analysis for instabilities observed experimentally was conducted and the linearly increasing tendency of frequency was observed as the hydrogen content in fuel increases.

  • Low cost launch vehicle for next-generation is underway in advanced space countries such as the United States, Europe, Japan and China. This paper surveys the latest technological trends in avionics system, including ground management system. In the case of on-board equipment, to make short the development period and reduce the cost, the equipment is standardized and modularized for each functions to flexibly respond to changes in system requirements. In addition, a network is applied to all inter-equipment interfaces and a powerful self-diagnostic function is included in the equipment to realize automation/simplification of the interface with the ground system, and it is confirmed that an efficient launcher system is realized.

  • STS 321 stainless steel is generally used for a material of high-temperature and high-pressure system including liquid rocket engine. The constitutive equation for flow stress has been suggested using thermal stress component and athermal stress component based on Kocks dislocation barrier model to predict 321 stainless steel's deformation behavior at elevated temperature. The suggested model predicted well the material deformation behaviors of 321 stainless steel at the wide temperature range from room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, the fundamental test for drag reduction is carried out by using a plasma generator. Fundamental test setup is constructed of visualization and drag measurement system. The schlieren technique is used to visualize the plasma counterflow in supersonic flow. The penetration of the plasma jet and the change of the flow structure are observed through visualization results. Load cell is used to confirm possibility of drag reduction. Results show that drag was reduced by 6.2% using plasma jet in supersonic flow.

  • Air-fuel mixing and flame-holding are two important factors that have to be considered in the design of an injection system. Different injection strategies have been proposed with particular concern for rapid air-fuel mixing and flame-holding. Two representative injection techniques can be applied in a supersonic combustor. One of the simplest approaches is a transverse(normal) injection. The cavity flame holder, an integrated fuel injection/flame-holding approach, has been proposed as a new concept for flame holding and air-fuel mixing in a supersonic combustor. This paper describes numerical efforts to characterize the flame-holding and air-fuel mixing process of a model scramjet engine combustor, where hydrogen is injected into a supersonic cross flow and a cavity. The combustion phenomena in a model scramjet engine, which has been experimentally studied at University of Queensland and Australian National University using a free-piston shock tunnel, were observed around the separation region of the transverse injector upstream and the inside cavity. The results show that this flow separation generates recirculation regions which increase air-fuel mixing. Self-ignition occurs in the separation-freestream and cavity-fteestream interfaces.

  • The microwave discharge ion engine generates plasmas of both the main ion source and the neutralizer using 4㎓ microwave without discharge electrodes and hollow cathodes, so that long life and durability against oxygen and air are expected. The MUSES-C “HAYABUSA” asteroid explorer installing four microwave discharge ion engines “$\mu$10s” was launched into deep space by M-V rocket No.5 on May 9, 2003. After vacuum exposure and several runs of baking for reduction of residual gas the ion engine system established the continuous acceleration of the spacecraft toward the asteroid “ITOKAWA”. The Doppler shift measurement of the communication microwave revealed the performance of ion engines, which is 8mN thrust force for a single unit with 3,200sec specific impulse at 23mN/㎾ thrust power ratio. At the end of 2003 the accumulated operational time exceeded 8,000 hour and unit. HAYABUSA will execute the Earth swing-by on June 2004 and arrive at the asteroid in 2005 and return to Earth in 2007.

  • The weak point of the artificial neural network(ANN) is that it is easy to fall in local minima when it learns too much nonlinear data. Accordingly, the classification ratio must be low. To overcome this weakness, the hybrid method has been proposed. That is, the ANN learns data selectively after detecting the defect position by the support vector machine(SVM). First, the SVM has been used for determination of the defect position and then the magnitude of the defect has been measured by the ANN. In off-design condition, the operation region of the engine is wide and the nonlinearity of learning data increases. The module system, dividing the whole operating region into reasonably small-size sections, has been suggested to solve this problem. In this study, the proposed algorithm has diagnosed the defects of triple components as well as single and dual components of the gas turbine engine in off-design condition.
