Many recent studies have concentrated upon the radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols. Though their scattering and absorption of radiation, aerosols can also induce some other important environment effects. In this study, new radiation code and aerosol data within Atmosphere General Circulation Model (AGCM) is used to assess the aerosol radiative forcing and to analyze relative climate effects. The new Kangnung National University AGCM Stratospheric-15 (KNU AGCM ST15) was integrated by using two sets of radiative effect of aerosols: CTRL as not a radiative effect of aerosols and AERO as a radiative effect of aerosols. Two cases show the difference of net shortwave radiation budget at top-of-atmosphere (TOA) is found to be about $-3.4Wm^{-2}$, at the surface (SFC) is about $-5.6Wm^{-2}$. Consequently the mean atmospheric absorption due to aerosol layer in global is about $2.2Wm^{-2}$. This result confirms the existence of a negative forcing due to the direct effect of aerosols at the surface and TOA in global annual mean. In addition, it is found that cooling over at the surface air temperature due to radiative effect of aerosols is about $0.17^{\circ}C$. It is estimated that radiative forcing of the net upward longwave radiation taken as the indirect effect of aerosol is much smaller than that of the direct effect as there is about $0.2Wm^{-2}$ of positive forcing both at TOA and at SFC. From this study, It made an accurate estimation of considering effect of aerosols that is negative effect. This may slow the rate of projected global warming during the $21^{st}$ century.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of small satellite, namely PROBA platform with the compact high resolution imaging spectrometer (CHRIS), for aerosol retrieval in Hong Kong. The rationale of our technique is to estimate the aerosol reflectances by decomposing the Top of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectances from surface reflectance and Rayleigh path reflectances. For the determination of surface reflectances, the modified Minimum Reflectance Technique (MRT) is used on three winter ortho-rectified CHRIS images: Dec-18-2005, Feb-07-2006, Nov-09-2006. For validation purpose, MRT image was compared with ground based multispectral radiometer measurements and atmospherically corrected Landsat image. Results show good agreements between CHRIS-derived surface reflectance and both by ground measurement data as well as by Landsat image (r>0.84). The Root-Mean-Square Errors (RMSE) at 485, 551 and 660nm are 0.99%, 1.19%, and 1.53%, respectively. For aerosol retrieval, Look Up Tables (LUT) which are aerosol reflectances as a function of various AOT values were calculated by SBDART code with AERONET inversion products. The CHRIS derived Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) images were then validated with AERONET sunphotometer measurements and the differences are 0.05~0.11 (error=10~18%) at 440nm wavelength. The errors are relatively small compared to those from the operational moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) Deep Blue algorithm (within 30%) and MODIS ocean algorithm (within 20%).

Two hybrid receptor models, potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted tracjectory (CWT), were compared for locating $PM_{2.5}$ sources contributing to the atmospheric $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in Seoul. The source contribution estimates by chemical receptor model (CMB) receptor model were used to identify better source areas, Among the sources, soil, agricultural burning, marine aerosol, coal-fired power plant and Chinese aerosol were only considered for the study because these sources were more likely to be associated with the long-range transport of air pollutant. Both methods are based on combining chemical data with calculated air parcel backward trajectories. However, the PSCF analyses were performed with trajectories above the $75^{th}$ percentile criterion values, while the CWT analyses used all trajectories. This difference resulted in locating of different sources, which might be helpful to interpret locating of $PM_{2.5}$ sources, High possible source areas in source contribution of soil and agricultural burning contributing to the Seoul $PM_{2.5}$ were inland areas of Heibei and Shandong provinces (highest density areas of agricultural production and population) in China. The "Chinese aerosol" was used as a representative source for the $PM_{2.5}$ originated from urban area in China. High possible source areas for the aerosol were the cities in China where are relatively close to the receptor. This result suggests that Chinese aerosol is likely to be a useful tool in studies on source apportionment and identification in Korea.
The Asian dust (Hwangsa) forecasting model, Asian Dust Aerosol Model (ADAM) has been modified by using satelliate monitoring of surface vegetation, which enables to simulate dusts occuring not only in springtime but also for all-year-round period. Coupled with the Unified Model (UM), the operational weather forecasting model at KMA, UM-ADAM2 was implemented for operational dust forecasting since 2010, with an aid of development of Meteorology-Chemistry Interface Processor (MCIP) for usage UM. The performance analysis of the ADAM2 forecast was conducted with $PM_{10}$ concentrations observed at monitoring sites in the source regions in China and the downstream regions of Korea from March to December in 2010. It was found that the UM-ADAM2 model was able to simulate quite well Hwangsa events observed in spring and wintertime over Korea. In the downstream region of Korea, the starting and ending times of dust events were well-simulated, although the surface $PM_{10}$ concentration was slightly underestimated for some dust events. The general negative bias less than $35{\mu}g\;m^{3}$ in $PM_{10}$ is found and it is likely to be due to other fine aerosol species which is not considered in ADAM2. It is found that the correlation between observed and forecasted $PM_{10}$ concentration increases as forecasting time approaches, showing stably high correlation about 0.7 within 36 hr in forecasting time. This suggests the possibility that there is potential for the UM-ADAM2 model to be used as an operational Asian dust forecast model.
Soot particles emitted from combustion processes are often coated by non-absorbing organic materials, which enhance the global warming effect of soot particles. It is of importance to study the condensation characteristics of soot particles experimentally and theoretically to reduce the uncertainty of the climate impact of soot particles. In this study, the condensational growth of soot particles in a tubular coater was modeled by a one-dimensional (1D) plug flow model and a two-dimensional (2D) laminar flow model. The effects of 2D heat and mass transports on the predicted particle growth were investigated. The temperature and coating material vapor concentration distributions in radial direction, which the 1D model could not accounted for, affected substantially the particle growth in the coater. Under the simulated conditions, the differences between the temperatures and vapor concentrations near the wall and at the tube center were large. The neglect of these variations by the 1D model resulted in a large error in modeling the mass transfer and aerosol dynamics occurring in the coater. The 1D model predicted the average temperature and vapor concentration quite accurately but overestimated the average diameter of the growing particles considerably. At the outermost grid, at which condensation begins earliest due to the lowest temperature and saturation vapor concentration, condensing vapor was exhausted rapidly because of the competition between condensations on the wall and on the particle surface, decreasing the growth rate. At the center of the tube, on the other hand, the growth rate was low due to high temperature and saturation vapor concentration. The effects of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis were not high enough to transport the coating material vapor quickly from the tube center to the wall. The 1D model based on perfect radial mixing could not take into account this phenomenon, resulting in a much higher growth rate than what the 2D model predicted. The result of this study indicates that contrary to a previous report for a thermodenuder, 2D heat and mass transports must be taken into account to model accurately the condensational particle growth in a coater.

Seasonal variation of major inorganic ions in the greater Seoul area was estimated using a photochemical box model and a gas/aerosol equilibrium model with emphasis on semi -volatile nitrate. Pollutant emission was determined by season by comparing the predicted concentration with the measurement one obtained for a year from the late 1996. The results showed that particulate nitrate was the highest in summer but about 40% of total nitrate was present in the gas phase. This was due to volatilization at high temperature since ammonia was sufficient to neutralize all nitrate regardless of season. As relative humidity in summer was higher than the deliquescence point, particulate ion concentration with water was two times higher than that in other season. So called ‘NOx disbenefit’ indicating increase in particulate ion concentration with decrease in NOx emission was evident especially in winter.
Aerosol optical properties as well as vertical location of layer can alter the radiative balance of the Earth by reflecting and absorbing solar radiation. In this study, radiative transfer model (RTM) and satellite-based analysis have been used to quantify the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative effect of aerosol layers in the cloudy atmosphere of the northeast Asia. RTM simulation results show that the atmospheric warming effect of aerosols increases with their height in the presence of underlying cloud layer. This relationship is higher for stronger absorbing aerosols and higher surface albedo condition. Over study region ($20-50^{\circ}N$, $110-140^{\circ}E$) and aerosol event cases, it is possible to qualitatively identify absorbing aerosol effects in the presence of clouds by combining the UV Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) derived from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), cloud parameters derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), with TOA Upward Shortwave Flux (USF) from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES). As the regional-mean radiative effect of aerosols, 6 - 26 % lower the USF between aerosols and cloud cover is taken into account. These results demonstrate the importance of estimation for the accurate quantification of aerosol's direct and indirect effect.
To examine the detectability of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust from China crossing over the Yellow sea, three works carried out as follows , Firstly, a comparison was made of the visible(VIS), water vapor(WV), and Infrared(IR) images of the GMS-5 and NOAA/AVHRR on the cases of yellow sand event over Korea. Secondly, the spectral radiance and reflectance(%) was observed during the yellow sand phenomena on April, 1998 in Seoul using the GER-2600 spectroradiometer, which observed the reflected radiance from 350 to 2500 nm in the atmosphere. We selected the optimum wavelength for detecting of the yellow sand from this observation, considering the effects of atmospheric absorption. Finally, the atmospheric radiance emerging from the LOWTRAN-7 radiative transfer model was simulated with and without yellow sand, where we used the estimated aerosol column optical depth ($\tau$ 673 nm) in the Meteorological Research Institute and the d'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosol radiative characteristics. The image analysis showed that it was very difficult to detect the yellow sand region only by the image processing because the albedo characteristics of the sand vary irregularly according to the density, size, components and depth of the yellow sand clouds. We found that the 670-680 nm band was useful to simulate aerosol characteristics considering the absorption band from the radiance observation. We are now processing the simulation of atmospheric radiance distribution in the range of 400-900 nm. The purpose of this study is to present the preliminary results of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust detectability using the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager(OSMI), which will be mounted on KOMPSAT-1 as the ocean color monitoring sensor with the range of 400-900 nm wavelength.
Characteristics of precipitation response to enhanced aerosols have been investigated during the severe haze events observed in Korea for 2011 to 2016. All 6-years haze events are classified into long-range transported haze (LH: 31%), urban haze (UH: 28%), and yellow sand (YS: 18%) in order. Long-range transported one is mainly discussed in this study. Interestingly, both LH (68%) and YS (87%) appear to be more frequently accompanied with precipitation than UH (48%). We also found out the different timing of precipitation for LH and YS, respectively. The variations of precipitation frequency for the LH event tend to coincide with aerosol variations specifically in terms of temporal covariation, which is in contrast with YS. Increased aerosol loadings following precipitation for the YS event seems to be primarily controlled by large scale synoptic forcing. Meanwhile, aerosols for the LH event may be closely associated with precipitation longevity through changes in cloud microphysics such that enhanced aerosols can increase smaller cloud droplets and further extend light precipitation at weaker rate. Notably, precipitation persisted longer than operational weather forecast not considering detailed aerosol-cloud interactions, but the timescale was limited within a day. This result demonstrates active interactions between aerosols and meteorology such as probable modifications of cloud microphysics and precipitation, synoptic-induced dust transport, and precipitation-scavenging in Korea. Understanding of aerosol potential effect on precipitation will contribute to improving the performance of numerical weather model especially in terms of precipitation timing and location.
