This paper presents a control effectiveness analysis of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta. A multibody dynamic model of the insect that considers the time-varying inertia of two flapping wings is established, based on measurement data from the real hawkmoth. A six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) multibody flight dynamics simulation environment is used to analyze the effectiveness of the control variables defined in a wing kinematics function. The aerodynamics from complex wing flapping motions is estimated by a blade element approach, including translational and rotational force coefficients derived from relevant experimental studies. Control characteristics of flight dynamics with respect to the changes of three angular degrees of freedom (stroke positional, feathering, and deviation angle) of the wing kinematics are investigated. Results show that the symmetric (asymmetric) wing kinematics change of each wing only affects the longitudinal (lateral) flight forces and moments, which implies that the longitudinal and lateral flight controls are decoupled. However, there are coupling effects within each plane of motion. In the longitudinal plane, pitch and forward/backward motion controls are coupled; in the lateral plane, roll and side-translation motion controls are coupled.

A two-dimensional unsteady, inviscid flow solver has been developed for the simulation of airfoil-vortex interactions on unstructured dynamically adapted meshes. The Euler solver is based on a second-order accurate implicit time integration using a point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme and a dual time-step subiteration. A vertex-centered, finite-volume discretization is used in conjunction with the Roe's flux-difference splitting. An unsteady solution-adaptive dynamic mesh scheme is used by adding and deleting mesh points to take account of both spatial and temporal variations of the flow field. The effect of vortex interaction on the aeroelastic displacement of an airfoil attached to the idealized two degree-of-freedom spring system is investigated.

A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from the two-stage light gas gun. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The effect of a virtual mass is added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation system. The computed results reasonably capture the major flow characteristics which we generated in launching the projectile supersonically, such as the interaction between the shock wave and the blast wave, the interaction between the vortical flow and the barrel shock, and the steady under-expanded jet. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, and drag histories of the projectile.
This paper focuses on the processes of wind flow in atmospheric boundary layer, to produce realistic full scale pressures for design of low-rise buildings. CFD with LES turbulence closure is implemented on a scale 1:1 prototype building. A proximity study was executed computationally in CFD with LES that suggests new recommendations on the computational domain size, in front of a building model, apart from common RANS-based guidelines (e.g., COST and AIJ). Our findings suggest a location of the test building, different from existing guidelines, and the inflow boundary proximity influences pressure correlation and reproduction of peak loads. The CFD LES results are compared to corresponding pressures from open jet, full scale, wind tunnel, and the ASCE 7-10 standard for roof Component & Cladding design. The CFD LES shows its adequacy to produce peak pressures/loads on buildings, in agreement with field pressures, due to its capabilities of reproducing the spectral contents of the inflow at 1:1 scale.

Usual human gait can be modeled as continual impact phenomenon that happens due to the topological change of the kinematic structure of the two feet. The human being adapts his own control algorithm to minimize the ill effect due to the collision with the environment. In order to operate a Humanoid robot like the human being, it is necessary to understand the physics of the impact and to derive an analytical model of the impact. In this paper, specially, we focus on impact analysis of the kicking motion in playing soccer. At the instant of impact, the external impulse exerted on the ball by the foot is an important property. Initially, we introduce the complete external impulse model of the lower-extremity of the human body and analyze the external impulses for several kicking postures of the lower-extremity. Secondly, a trajectory-planning algorithm of a ball, in which the initial velocity and the launch angle of the ball are calculated for a desired trajectory of the ball, will be introduced. The aerodynamic effect such as drag force and lift force is also considered. We carry out numerical simulation and experimentation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed analytical methodology.
The development of a tilting train with construction of electric line on the conventional railway is required for speed-up on the conventional railway with many curving sections. For development of tilting train, the study and development of the tilting system and tilting bogie having the different mechanism with a general high speed train will play a main role for improving the technology in the field of Korean railway The study and development of the pantograph tilting mechanism in order to keep a good contact behavior between a pantograph and a contact wire by tilting a pantograph on the opposite direction of the vehicle tilting direction. In this study, we analyzed the aerodynamic characteristic of a developing pantograph on the tilting train and obtained the contact force with catenary by aerodynamic lift force by the aerodynamic analysis. We also performed the numerical analysis for design the device controlling lift force on a pantograph. From the aerodynamic simulation and parameter study for a device to control the lift force, we will suggest the various shape and the optimal shape of it corresponding to a developing tilting pantograph. The Fluent software is used for the calculation of flow profile in this study.
It takes a lot of time and effort to generate grids for numerical analysis of problems with ground effect because the relative attitude and height of airfoil should be maintained to the ground as well as the inflow. A low Mach number preconditioned turbulent flow solver using the overlap grid technique has been developed and applied to the ground effect simulation. It has been validated that the present method using the multi-block grid gives us highly accurate solutions comparing with the experimental data of the RAE 101 airfoil in an unbounded condition. Present numerical method has been extended to simulate ground effect problems by using the overlapped grid system to avoid tedious work in generating multi-block grid system. An extended method using the overlapped grid has been verified and validated by comparing with results of multi-block method and experimental data as well. Consequently, the overlapped grid method can provide not only sufficiently accurate solutions but also the efficiency to simulate ground effect problems. It is shown that the pressure and aerodynamic centers move backward by the ground effect as the airfoil approaches to the ground.
Transition prediction results are validated with experimental data obtained from a transonic wind tunnel for the KU109C airfoil. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code is simultaneously coupled with the transition transport model of Langtry and Menter and applied to the numerical prediction of aerodynamic performance of the KU109C airfoil. Drag coefficients from the experiment are better correlated to the numerical prediction results using a transition transport model rather than the fully turbulent simulation results. Maximum lift coefficient and drag divergence at the zero-lift condition with Mach number are investigated. Through the present validation procedure, the accuracy and usefulness of both the experiment and the numerical prediction are assessed.
Most airfoils for wind turbines commercially available have been developed for aircrafts, which are operated at high Reynolds numbers. However, Reynolds numbers of wind turbines are very low compared to those of aircrafts. In other to improve wind turbine performances, airfoils for the use of wind turbine shall be designed such as S-series airfoils developed by NREL in America. The authors have designed new airfoils for wind turbines considering designated operation conditions of wind turbines and even local wind resources in Korea. The designed airfoils are characterized by improved roughness insensitivities compared to other airfoils such as S814 and S820. The developed KWA005-240 and KWA009-127 are for root and tip sections of a wind turbine blade, respectively. Although the results show much improved performances against NACA airfoils, performance data of post-stall regulation loses some accuracies due to the characteristics of the simulation tool of XFOIL. Therefore, wind tunnel experiments are required for more accurate evaluation of the designed airfoils. Currently, the experiments has been completed and the data analysis works are going on now. The final results obtained from the experiments will be published soon.

Helicopters and rotary-wing vehicles encounter a wide variety of complex aerodynamic phenomena and these phenomena present substantial challenges for computational fluid dynamics(CFD) models. This investigation presents the rotor aerodynamic analysis items for the helicopter development and variety aerodynamic analysis methods to provide the better solution to researchers and helicopter developers between aerodynamic problems and numerical aerodynamic analysis methods. The numerical methods to make an analysis of helicopter rotor are as below - CFD Modelling : actuator disk model, BET model, fully rotor model,... - Grid : sliding mesh, chimera mesh / structure mesh, unstructure mesh,... - etc. : panel method periodic boundary, quasi-steady simulation, incompressible,... The choice of CFD methodology and the numerical resolution for the overall problem have been driven mostly by available computer speed and memory at any point in time. The combination of the knowledge of aerodynamic analysis items, available computing power and choice of CFD methods now allows the solution of a number of important rotorcraft aerodynamics design problems.
