Aircraft design requires the intergration of several disciplines, inculding aerodynamics, structures, controls. To achieves advances in performance, each technology, or discipline must be more accurate in analysis and must be more highly intergrated. One of the important interdisciplinary interactions in mordern aircraft design is that of aerodynamics and structures. In this study, for increasing accuracy in each discipline's analysis, CFD for aerodynamic analysis and FEM for structurral analysis was used and, for considering important interdisciplinary interactions, aeroelastic effect was considered. As optimization algorithm, PBIL algorithm was used for global optima and was parallelized to alleviate the computational burden. The efficiency and accuracy of the present method was assesed by range maximiziation of reference of reference wing.
Losses on the turbine consist of the mechanical loss, tip clearance loss, secondary flow loss and blade profile loss etc.,. More than 60 % of total losses on the turbine is generated by the two latter loss mechanisms. These losses are directly related with the reduction of turbine efficiency. In order to provide a new design methodology for reducing losses and increasing turbine efficiency, a two-dimensional axial-type turbine blade shape is modified by the optimization process with two-dimensional compressible flow analysis codes, which are validated by the experimental results on the VKI turbine blade. A turbine blade profile is selected at the mean radius of turbine rotor using on a heavy duty gas turbine, and optimized at the operating condition. Shape parameters, which are employed to change the blade shape, are applied as design variables in the optimization process. Aerodynamic, mechanical and geometric constraints are imposed to ensure that the optimized profile meets all engineering restrict conditions. The objective function is the pitchwise area averaged total pressure at the 30% axial chord downstream from the trailing edge. 13 design variables are chosen for blade shape modification. A 10.8 % reduction of total pressure loss on the turbine rotor is achieved by this process, which is same as a more than 1% total-to-total efficiency increase. The computed results are compared with those using 11 design variables, and show that optimized results depend heavily on the accuracy of blade design.
In the present paper, a flap was optimized to maximize the lift. A 2-element fowler flap system was utilized for optimization with an initial shape of general aviation airfoil and a flap shape designed by Wentz. Response surface method and Hicks-Henne shape function were implemented for optimization. 2-D Navier-Stokes method was used to solve flow field around aGA(W)-1 airfoil with a fowler flap. Commercial programs including Visual-Doc, Gambit/Tgridand Fluent were used. Upper surface shape and the flap gap were optimized and lift for landing condition was improved considerably. The original and optimized flaps were tested in the KARI's 1-m low speed wind tunnel to examine changes in aerodynamic characteristics. For optimized flap tests, the similar trend to prediction could be seen but stall angle of attack was lower than what was expected. Also, less gap than optimized design delayed stall and produced better lift characteristics. This is believed to be the effect of turbulence model.

High-lift devices have a major influence on takeoff, landing and stall performance of an aircraft. Therefore, a slotted flap design optimization process is proposed in this paper to obtain the most effective flap configuration from supported 2D flap configuration. Flap deflection, Gap and Overlap are considered as main contributors to flap lift increment. ANSYS Fluent 13.0.0$^{(R)}$ is used as aerodynamic analysis software that provides accurate solution at given flight conditions. Optimum configuration is obtained by Sequential Quadratic Programing (SQP) algorithm. Performance of the aircraft with optimized flap is estimated using Aircraft Design Synthesis Program (ADSP), the in-house performance analysis code. Obtained parameters such as takeoff, landing distance and stall speed met KAS-VLA airworthiness requirements.

Electric fans, which consist of axial blades, are operated by the induction motor. In this paper, the objective of this study is the performance improvement of the base model fan using the design optimization. In order to aerodynamic analysis, computational simulations are performed using commercial tool ANSYS-CFX ver. 14.5. And k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model is used for the CFD analysis. The design variables are set up as sweep and lean angles. Volumetric flow rate and torque of the fan blades are fixed to objective function. The optimized model is shown the increment of the volumetric flow rate and the reduction of the torque compared with the base model. The experimental procedure is followed KS C 9301. CFD results and experimental results are fairly well matched.

A simulation program is developed to analyse the performance of an axial flow turbine stage based on the meanline prediction method. The gradient projection method is utilized to minimize the aerodynamic losses under the specified constraints on such as flow coefficient, total pressure ratio, stage power and blade loading coefficient. After obtaining the optimum point for minimizing the stage loss, a sensitivity analysis is carried out ground the optimum point to find the effects of the design variables and the design constraints on the stage performance. The result of the senitivity analysis under a constant blade loading coefficient shows that the total loss is more sensitive to the mean diameter, the absolute flow angle at nozzle outlet, the relative flow angle at rotor outlet and the axial mean velocity compared to the chords and the pitches. Moreover, the design constraints on the degree of reaction at root and the blade length-to-diameter ratio are found to be most influencial on the maximization of the overall aerodynamic efficiency.

The aerodynamic optimization method for airfoil design was described in this paper. The Navier-Stokes equations were solved to consider the viscous flow information around an airfoil. The Modified Method of Feasible Direction(MMFD) was used for sensitivity analysis and the polynomial interpolation was used for distance calculation of the minimization. The Message Passing Interface(MPI) library of parallel computation was adopted to reduce the computation time of flow solver by decomposing the entire computational domain into 8 sub-domains and one-to-one allocating 8 processors to 8 sub-domains. The parallel computation was also used to compute the sensitivity analysis by allocating each search direction to each processor. The present optimization reduced the drag of airfoil while the lift is maintained at the tolerable design value.

Laidback fan shaped film-cooling hole is formulated numerically and optimized with the help of three-dimensional numerical analysis, surrogate methods, and the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by four geometric design variables, the injection angle of the hole, the lateral expansion angle of the diffuser, the forward expansion angle of the hole, and the ratio of the length to the diameter of the hole, to maximize the film-cooling effectiveness compromising with the aerodynamic loss. The objective function values are numerically evaluated through Reynolds- averaged Navier-Stokes analysis at the designs that are selected through the Latin hypercube sampling method. Using these numerical simulation results, the Response Surface Approximation model are constructed for each objective function and a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal front. The clustered points from Pareto optimal front were evaluated by flow analysis. These designs give enhanced objective function values in comparison with the experimental designs.
The present study is performed to find the effect of corner recession on a square plan-shaped tall building. A series of numerical simulations have been carried out to find the two orthogonal wind force coefficients on various model configurations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Numerical analyses are performed by using ANSYS-CFX (k-ℇ turbulence model) considering the length scale of 1:300. The study is performed for 0° to 360° wind angle of attack. The CFD data thus generated is utilised to fit parametric equations to predict alongwind and crosswind force coefficients, Cfx and Cfy. The precision of the parametric equations is validated by employing a wind tunnel study for the 40% corner recession model, and an excellent match is observed. Upon satisfactory validation, the parametric equations are further used to carry out multiobjective optimization considering two orthogonal force coefficients. Pareto optimal design results are presented to propose suitable percentages of corner recession for the study building. The optimization is based on reducing the alongwind and crosswind forces simultaneously to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the building.

A parallel computing technique was applied to large scale structure analysis or aerodynamic design and it is a essential element in reducing the huge computation time for large scale design problem. We can use a many computers for reducing the analysis time of multidisciplinary design optimization. But previous MDO frameworks can not support a parallel design process technique so still existing which calls an analysis program continuously. In this paper, We developed a MDO framework(MLR) which supports a parallel design process to solve sequential analysis call. Finally, three sample cases are presented to show the efficiency of design time using the suggested MDO framework.
