An aerodynamic optimization design process of multistage axial turbine is presented in this article: first, applying quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to conduct preliminary design and then adopting modern optimization design methods to implement multistage local optimization. Quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods, which mainly refer to S2 flow surface direct problem calculation, adopt the S2 flow surface direct problem calculation program of Harbin Institute of Technology. Multistage local optimization adopts the software of Numeca/Design3D, which jointly adopts genetic algorithm and artificial neural network. The major principle of the methodology is that the successive design evaluation is performed by using an artificial neural network instead of a flow solver and the genetic algorithms may be used in an efficient way. Flow computation applies three-dimensional viscosity Navier Stokes(N-S) equation solver. Such optimization process has three features: (i) local optimization based on aerodynamic performance of every cascade; (ii) several times of optimizations being performed to every cascade; and (iii) alternate use of coarse grid and fine grid. Such process was applied to optimize a three-stage axial turbine. During the optimization, blade shape and meridional channel were respectively optimized. Through optimization, the total efficiency increased 1.3% and total power increased 2.4% while total flow rate only slightly changed. Therefore, the total performance was improved and the design objective was achieved. The preliminary design makes use of quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to achieve most reasonable parameter distribution so as to preliminarily enhance total performance. Then total performance will be further improved by adopting multistage local optimization design. Thus the design objective will be successfully achieved without huge expenditure of manpower and calculation time. Therefore, such optimization design process may be efficiently applied to the aerodynamic design optimization of multistage axial turbine.
Rectangular-to-Ellipse Shape Transition (REST) inlets are a class of inward turning inlets designed for hypersonic flight. The aerodynamic design of REST inlets involves very complex flows and shock-wave patterns. These inlets are used in highly integrated propulsive systems. Often the design of these inlets may require many geometrical constraints at different cross-section. In present work a design approach for hypersonic inward-turning inlets, adapted for REST inlets, is coupled with a multi-objective optimization procedure. The automated procedure iterates on the parametric representation and on the numerical solution of a base flow from which the REST inlet is generated by using streamline tracing and shape transition algorithms. The typical design problem of optimizing the total pressure recovery and mass flow capture of the inlet is solved by the proposed procedure. The accuracy of the optimal solutions found is discussed and the performances of the designed REST inlets are investigated by means of fully 3-D Euler and 3-D RANS analyses.

Recent development of high speed computers and use of optimization techniques have given a big momentum of turbomachinery design replacing expensive experimental cost as well as trial and error approaches. The surrogate based optimization techniques being used for aerodynamic turbomachinery designs coupled with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations analysis involve single- and multi-objective optimization methods. The objectives commonly tried to improve were adiabatic efficiency, pressure ratio, weight etc. Presently coupling the fluid flow and structural analysis is being tried to find better design in terms of weight, flutter and vibration, and turbine life. The present article reviews the surrogate based optimization techniques used recently in turbomachinery shape optimizations.
The present paper is focused on analyzing a set of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation data on reducing orthogonal peak base moment coefficients on a high-rise rectangular building with wings. The study adopts an aerodynamic optimization procedure (AOP) composed of CFD, artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (G.A.). A parametric study is primarily accomplished by altering the wing positions with 3D transient CFD analysis using k - ε turbulence models. The CFD technique is validated by taking up a wind tunnel test. The required design parameters are obtained at each design point and used for training ANN. The trained ANN models are used as surrogates to conduct optimization studies using G.A. Two single-objective optimizations are performed to minimize the peak base moment coefficients in the individual directions. An additional multiobjective optimization is implemented with the motivation of diminishing the two orthogonal peak base moments concurrently. Pareto-optimal solutions specifying the preferred building shapes are offered.

This paper discusses a one-way fluid structural interaction (FSI) analysis and shape optimization of the impeller blades for a 15,000 HP centrifugal compressor using the response surface method (RSM). Because both the aerodynamic performance and the structural safety of the impeller are affected by the shape of its blades, shape optimization is necessary using the FSI analysis, which includes a structural analysis for the induced fluid pressure and centrifugal force. The FSI analysis is performed in ANSYS Workbench: ANSYS CFX is used for the flow field and ANSYS Mechanical is used for the structural field. The response surfaces for the FSI results (efficiency, pressure ratio, maximum stress, etc.) generated based on the design of experiments (DOE) are used to find an optimal shape for the impeller blades, which provides the maximum aerodynamic performance subject to the structural safety constraints.

A multi-level design optimization framework for aerodynamic design of rotary wing such as propeller and helicopter rotor blades is presented in this study. Strategy of the proposed framework is to enhance aerodynamic performance by sequentially applying the planform and sectional design optimization. In the first level of a planform design, we used a genetic algorithm and blade element momentum theory (BEMT) based on two-dimensional aerodynamic database to find optimal planform variables. After an initial planform design, local flow conditions of blade sections are analyzed using high-fidelity CFD methods. During the next level, a sectional design optimization is conducted using two dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and a gradient based optimization algorithm. When optimal airfoil shape is determined at the several spanwise locations, a planform design is performed again. Through this iterative design process, not only an optimal flow condition but also an optimal shape of an EAV propeller blade is obtained. To validate the optimized propeller-blade design, it is tested in wind-tunnel facility with different flow conditions. An efficiency, which is slightly less than the expected improvement of 7% predicted by our proposed design framework but is still satisfactory to enhance the aerodynamic performance of EAV system.
In preliminary design phase, the wing geometry of the civil aircraft was determined using the empirical equation and historical data. To make wing geometry more aerodynamically efficient, an aerodynamic shape optimization was conducted. For this purpose the parametric modeling, high fidelity CFD analysis and metamodel-based optimal design technique were adopted. The parametric modeling got the design process to achieve the improvement by generating the configuration outputs easily for the major design variables. The optimal design equations were formularized as the type of the multi-objective functions considering low/high speed and lift/drag coefficient. The optimal solution was explored with the help of the kriging metamodel and the desirability function, therefore the optimal wing planform was sought to be excellent at both low and high speed region. Additionally the optimal wing planform was validated that it was excellent not only at the specific AOA, but also all over the range of AOA.
Shape optimization of the 3-dimensional WIG airfoil with 3.0-aspect ratio has been performed by using the multi-objective genetic algorithm. The WIG ship effectively floating above the surface by the ram effect and the virtual additional aspect ratio by a ground is one of next-generation and cost-effective transportations. Unlike the airplane flying out of the ground effect, a WIG ship has possibility to capsize because of unsatisfying the static stability. The WIG ship should satisfy aerodynamic properties as well as a static stability. They tend to strong contradict and it is difficult to satisfy aerodynamic properties and static stability simultaneously. It is inevitable that lift force has to scarify to obtain a static stability. Multi-objective optimization technique that the individual objectives are considered separately instead of weighting can overcome the conflict. Due to handling individual objectives, the optimum cannot be unique but a set of nondominated potential solutions: pareto optimum. There are three objectives; lift coefficient, lift-to-drag ratio and static stability. After a few evolutions, the non-dominated pareto individuals can be obtained. Pareto sets are all the set of possible and excellent solution across the design space. At any selections of the pareto set, these are no better solutions in all design space
In the shape design optimization of an airfoil, the shape function has been used to find the optimal airfoil shape for given conditions. The parameters determining the airfoil shape are used in the shape design optimization as design variables. However, they usually don't have physical meaning. The PARSEC (Parametric Shapes) function is a recently proposed shape function and its parameters have the physical meaning. In this study the usefulness of the PARSEC is tested for the RAE2822 airfoil in the transonic flow region to reduce the shock strength and the result is compared with Hicks-Henne function. The optimized airfoils reduce the shock strength and they show similar result.
Adaptive wings are capable of properly modifying their shape depending on the current aerodynamic conditions, in order to improve the overall performance of a flying vehicle. In this paper is presented the concept design of a small-scale compliant wing rib whose outline may be distorted in order to switch from an aerodynamic profile to another. The distortion loads are induced by shape memory alloy actuators placed within the frame of a wing section whose elastic response is predicted by the matrix method with beam formulation. Genetic optimization is used to find a wing rib structure (corresponding to the first airfoil) able to properly deforms itself when loaded by the SMA-induced forces, becoming as close as possible to the desired target shape (second airfoil). An experimental validation of the design procedure is also carried out with reference to a simplified structure layout.
