We developed a new measuring equipment which makes it possible to perform on-line measurements with the merits of its implicity and the time-saving characteristics. By using the newly developed measurement system, the amount of aeration is directly measured on several parameters, i.e, engine speed, oil quantity, oil deterioration, oil temperature and viscosity, etc. It showed that oil aeration is strongly related to be gas movements in crankcase and the residence time of circulating oil in oil pan. In addition, in order to clarify the mechanism of aeration and to quantify the degree of aeration, a modelling analysis to predict aeration was performed , and as a guiding parameter, Aeration Index was defined. Finally, the parameter was compared with the actual amount of aeration, and it was confirmed that they gave a good correlation with each other.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of optimal aeration time of livestock manure slurry with fruits pomace on germination index. Six co-digestates of livestock manure slurry with fruits was aerated with 0.1 ㎥ air/㎥·min for 54 days. The maturity of digestates was evaluated using the germination method. The germination index(GI) of co-digestate of SS + CS + MP was more than 70 at the 30th day of aeration. The GI of co-digestate of SS + CS was more than 70 at the 36th day of aeration. The GI of digestate of swine manure slurry alone was 70 at the 54th day of aeration. The co-digestate of SS + MP caused to shorten 24 days of aeration period to reach GI of 70, compared to swine manure digestate. These results suggest that the germination index of seed could be used to establish the optimal aeration time for co-digestate of liquid fertilizer.

Algal blooms in a local eutrophic lake often produces the musty and earthy taste & odor problems. Since the odor causing compounds(OCCs) including geosmin and 2-MIB have their own volatility, the OCCs can be removed from water by air stripping methods. Removal of TON(threshold odor number) as an index for OCCs could be fitted well with the first order equations($R^2=0.9$ above), where the air stripping coefficient of TON, k was in the range between 0.0055 and 0.0097 according to the aeration time. k within 30min aeration tests was 0.0097, while it was 0.0055 where the aeration time extended to 150min. With 15 mg/L of PAC, removal of TON was not simulated with 1st order equation within 30min aeration. Within 30min aeration, OCCs rather than geosmin and/or 2-MIB could be removed easily by air stripping or PAC adsorption, while OCCs such as geosmin and/or 2-MIB could be removed slowly by air stripping after 30min aeration. Geosmin and 2-MIB were not readily removed by air stripping(k of them were 0.0018~0.0047 and 0.0018~0.0034, respectively at different air flow rates). Geosmin could be removed by air stripping a little better than 2-MIB.
For the optimization of operating conditions for plant cell suspension culture in bioreactors, effects of bioreactor types, various kinds of impellers, and aeration rates were examined using Nicotiana tabacum cells as a model system. Stirred tank bioreactor and airlift bioreactor were used for the comparison of bioreactor type. Growth rates in both bioreactors were lower than in shake flasks. In terms of final cell concentration, stirred tank bioreactor supported a little bit better growth compared to airlift bioreactor. Impeller type did not affect cell growth significantly, but it was apparent that cell size index decreased in the case of using hollowed paddle impeller. When the aeration rate was maintained at 0.3 vvm, cell growth was the best. At above 1.0 vvm, growth inhibition as well a browning was noticed. In addition, it was found that cell size index reduced proportionally to the increased of aeration rate.

This study aims to conserve and monitor energy use in public sewage treatment plants by utilizing data from the SCADA system and by controlling the aeration rate required for maintaining effluent water quality. Power consumption in the sewage treatment process was predicted using the equipment's uptime, efficiency, and inherent power consumption. The predicted energy consumption was calibrated by measured data. Additionally, energy efficiency indicators were proposed based on statistical data for energy use, capacity, and effluent quality. In one case study, a sewage treatment plant operated via the SBR process used ~30% of energy consumed in maintaining the bioreactors and treated water tanks (included decanting pump and cleaning systems). Energy consumption analysis with the K-ECO Tool-kit was conducted for unit processing. The results showed that about 58.7% of total energy consumed was used in the preliminary and biological treatment rotating equipment such as the blower and pump. In addition, the energy consumption rate was higher to the order of 19.2% in the phosphorus removal process, 16.0% during sludge treatment, and 6.1% during disinfection and discharge. In terms of equipment energy usage, feeding and decanting pumps accounted for 40% of total energy consumed following 27% for blowers. By controlling the aeration rate based on the proposed feedback control system, the DO concentration was reduced by 56% compared pre-controls and the aeration amount decreased by 28%. The overall power consumption of the plant was reduced by 6% via aeration control.
This study aimed to determine the minimum period of aeration treatment of co-digestate to develop it as liquid fertilizer and the chemical changes that occur in the aerobic liquefying process. The co-digestates were divided into three types depending on their additives: swine slurry anaerobic digestate (SS AD), swine slurry 70% + cow slurry 30% anaerobic digestate (SS + CS AD), and swine slurry 70% + apple pomace 30% anaerobic digestate (SS + AP AD). The pH of all co-digestates increased rapidly after 3 days of aerobic treatment, but had slightly decreased in SS AD after 9 days and in SS + CS AD and SS + AP AD after 15 days. All co-digestates showed a strongly reduced pH between 27 and 36 days of aeration treatment. SS AD had lower pH value, dissolved oxygen (DO), NH4-N, and NO3-N content under aerobic conditions than other co-digestates. To assess the fully decomposed liquid fertilizer, a germination test was performed on the undiluted and diluted co-digestate using the liquid fertilizer germination index (LFGI) method. The relative germination ratio, relative root elongation, and germination index of SS AD were higher than those of the others. When the LFGI method was used for the germination test, all co-digestates showed an appropriate germination index of 70 after 60 days of aeration treatment. Thus, we suggest that the minimum period of aeration treatment for co-digestates might be 60 days to develop the fully decomposed liquid fertilizer.
Optimal range of soil physical quality to enhance crop productivity or to improve environmental health is still in dispute for the upland soil. We hypothesized that the optimal range might be established by comparing soil physical parameters and their interactions inhibiting crop growth. The parameter identifying optimal range covered favorable conditions of aeration, permeability and root extension. To establish soil physical standard two experiments were conducted as follows; 1) investigating interactions of bulk density and aeration porosity in the laboratory test and 2) determining effects of soil compaction and deep & conventional tillage on physical properties and crop growth in the field test. The crops were Perilla frutescens, Zea mays L., Solanum tuberosum L. and Secale cereael. The saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density from the root depth, root growth and stem length were obtained. Higher bulk density showed lower aeration porosity and hydraulic conductivity, and finer texture had lower threshold bulk density at 10% aeration bulk density. Reduced crop growth by subsoil compaction was higher in silt clay loam compared to other textures. Loam soil had better physical improvement in deep rotary tillage plot. Combined with results of the present studies, the soil physical quality was possibly assessed by bulk density index. Threshold subsoil bulk density as the upper value were $1.55Mg\;m^{-3}$ in sandy loam, $1.50Mg\;m^{-3}$ in loam and $1.45Mg\;m^{-3}$ in silty clay loam for optimal soil physical quality in upland.
To investigate the effect of hyperoxia on EKG findings and to evaluate the applicability of EKG as noninvasive monitoring index of oxygen toxicity, 38 rabbits were continuously exposed to 6 different conditions-3 hyperbaric oxygenations (HBO-2.5, 3.5 and 5ATA, 100% $O_2$), normobaric oxygenation (NBO,100% $O_2$), hyperbaric aeration (HBA-5ATA, 21% $O_2$) and normobaric aeration (NBA, 21% $O_2$)-for 120 minutes and their EKG and time to dyspnea and convulsion were recorded. Dyspnea and death were observed in exposure conditions of HBO-3.5 and HBO-5 (Positive rate of dyspnea 10%, 100%, death : 10%, 25%, respectively) only, and convulsion in 4 oxygenation groups (NBO;20%, HBO-2.5;20%, HBO-3.5;20%, HBO-5;88%). Abnormal EKG findings included arrhythmia and ST-T changes and the incidences was increasing with doses(partial pressure of oxygen). In addition to EKG change, findings observed during exposure were dyspnea and convulsion in the order of appearance and when non specific ST-T change was accepted as positive(abnormal) finding, the frequency of abnormal EKG was statistically significant(p<0.01), but when it was excluded from positive results, the frequency of EKG change was not significant(p>0.05). These results suggest that the effect of hyperoxia on heart is myocardial ischemia and arrhythmia, that oxygenation more than 3.5ATA causes myocardial damage in 120 minutes exposure, and that EKG is valuable as monitoring index of oxygen toxicity.
Solid animal wastes in Japan are treated mainly by composting. The composting process under controlled conditions is able to convert the wastes into high-quality organic fertilizer. Various types of composting facilities with/without forced aeration and turning device are available. Characterization of the maturing process during composting was studied, to improve the quality of compost and to make the degree of maturity. Recycling of animal wastes as compost without any environmental pollution will be closely related to the development of sustainable agriculture with organic fertilizer in Japan.

The understanding of the relationship between ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) communities in activated sludge and the operational treatment parameters supports the control of the treatment of ammonia-rich wastewater. The modifications of treatment parameters by alteration of the number and length of aerobic and anaerobic stages in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) working cycle may influence the efficiency of ammonium oxidation and induce changes in the AOB community. Therefore, in the research, the impact of an SBR cycle mode with alternating aeration/mixing conditions (7 h/1 h vs. 4 h/5.5 h) and volumetric exchange rate (n) on AOB abundance and diversity in activated sludge during the treatment of anaerobic sludge digester supernatant at limited oxygen concentration in the aeration stage (0.7 mg $O_2/l$) was assessed. AOB diversity expressed by the Shannon-Wiener index (H') was determined by the cycle mode. At aeration/mixing stage lengths of 7 h/1 h, H' averaged $2.48{\pm}0.17$, while at 4 h/5.5 h it was $2.35{\pm}0.16$. At the given mode, AOB diversity decreased with increasing n. The cycle mode did not affect AOB abundance; however, a higher AOB abundance in activated sludge was promoted by decreasing the volumetric exchange rate. The sequences clustering with Nitrosospira sp. NpAV revealed the uniqueness of the AOB community and the simultaneously lower ability of adaptation of Nitrosospira sp. to the operational parameters applied in comparison with Nitrosomonas sp.
