  • 'Nokkwang' green pepper plants were grown in soil system (silty loam with pH 6.5) under the greenhouse, to determine the effects of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) and subsurface drip irrigation plus aeration (SDIA) into root zone comparing with conventional surface drip irrigation (DI) in terms of water use efficiency, soil properties, and growth and fruit yield. Two drip lines per crop row were layed on the soil surface in DI system, buried at a depth of 20cm below the soil surface in SDI system, and also buried at a depth of20cm below the soil surface and aerated for 3minutes a hour during the daytime ($08:00{\sim}19:00$) by a air compressor in SDIA system. A automatic irrigation with starting point of -20kPa and ending point of -10kPa based on soil moisture contents was applied by controllers and electronic vacum soil moisture sensors. Reduction in soil moisture contents was delayed in SDI and SDIA, compared to DI. Irrigation amount applied in pepper cultivation was around 30% less in SDI than in DI. Electric conductivity and nitrate nitrogen content in the surface soil grown green pepper were significantly lowered in SSDI and SDIA, compared to DI. Better development of root system was observed in SDIA and SDI than in DI. Results showed that pepper fruit yield increased by 30% in SDIA and 22% in SDI in comparision with DI.

  • This study was conducted to develop a new drying method far reducing the drying cost and time and to investigate the drying characteristics of oak mushroom. A far infrared dryer of down draft air flow type used for this experiment can control the drying parameters, such as far infrared heater temperature and aeration velocity. The far infrared drying tests were performed at aeration velocities of 0.3 and 0.6m/s under the temperature of 90 and 100$^{\circ}C$ in for infrared heater, respectively. The results were compared and analyzed with those of an heated air drying method used as a control in terms of properties representing the drying characteristics. such as shrinkage rate, color, energy consumption amino acid components, drying rate and moisture ratio. The results obtained from this research can be summarized as follows. 1. The drying rate of far infrared drying was faster than that of heated air drying. With high temperature of far infrared heater and slow aeration velocity, the far infrared drying of down draft air flow type was superior to the heated air drying. 2. Most of far infrared drying conditions required less energy consumption than heated air drying. 3. The shrinkage rates of heated air drying and far infrared drying were decreased by 17.0% and 18.2∼19.8%, respectively. 4. The difference of color on oak mushroom surface before and after drying can be represented as $\Delta$E. $\Delta$E values of far infrared drying and heated air drying were 2.39∼4.55 and 6.77, respectively. 5. The amounts of free amino acids were higher in the far infrared than in the heated air drying. In addition the amounts of Gln and Glu generally were increased and those of Ala, Leu, and Val were decreased in order.

  • The operational parameters and control strategies of a tertiary wastewater treatment process a biological filtration system were investigated. The biological filtration system consisted of a nitrification filter (Fiter 1) and a polishing filter with anoxic and aerobic parts (Filter 2). SS, T-C-BOD, and T-N in effluent were kept stable at less than 3, 5 mg/L, and 5 mgN/L, respectively, under a HRT in Filter (filter-bed) of 0.37~2.3 h. T-N at the outlet of Filter 2 were about 1~5 mgN/L under the condition of LV of 50~202 m/d. Methanol addition was controlled based on the COD/N ratio or McCarty's equation. Constant COD/N ratio control results in excess addition under large diurnal fluctuation of $NOx^--N$, and McCarty's equation can be used to add appropriate amount of methanol. Control of methanol addition by on-line nitrate measurement, control of aeration by on-line DO measurement, and control of backwashing by head loss measurement are successfully operated. These results proved that this process prove the easy-maintenance and cost-effectively treatment is attainable.

  • Antibiotic activity of selected biocontrol agent Trichoderma harzianum ABGS-95 showed 59% to P. graminicola, 65% to P. aphanidermatum and 57% to Rhizoctonia solani compare to non-treated control. ABGC-95 showed resistant to major agrochemicals such as metalaxyl+mancozeb, etridiazole, propamocarb, toclofos methly, terbuconazole, pencycuron and flutolanil. The biocontrol agent T. harzianum ABGC-95 grew vigorously in low nutrient media and water agar. And sand mixture with wheat bran or mowing debris of zoysia grass also provided good growth of the organism. Application of sand mixture of Trichoderma spp. into aeration cores in golf showed most effective biocontrol of pythium blight. Top dressing application of T. harzianum ABGC-95 reached 83% control efficient while spray application of same biocontrol agent showed only 69% control. The biocontrol agent ABGC-95 successfully suppressed the population density of Pythium spp. in soil. The population density of total Pythium spp. in ABGC-95 treated soil was sustained almost same population at beginning(early May) up to end of August, while the population in untreated control plot was increased 5 times that of beginning and even 10 times in pathogen accumulated soil.

  • The objectives of this study were to compare the characteristics of water quality in alternative Aerobic-Anoxic(A/A) and Aerobic(Control) sludge digestion. The A/A process control parameter as the pH signal(dpH/dt) was used. Comparison of the result of A/A digestion with those of Aerobic digestion indicated a 54% saving in aeration compared to Aerobic digestion. TN removal efficiency rates of A/A and Aerobic digestion were 45% and 4%, respectively. The concentration of COD(64 mg/l and 268 mg/l for the A/A and Aerobic digestion, respectively) and Ortho-P in the supernatant were also less with A/A digestion. MLVSS and Coliform destructions were noticed similar for both digestion, but better dewatering charateristics were noted for the A/A digestion.

  • A long- time aeration method was developed for purification of animal wastewater. Under repeated aereations of 4 hours on and 4 hours off, the higher removal rates were obtained which were in average of 99%, 96%, 92% and 50% for BOD, SS, total nitrogen and phosporous, respectively. In detail, the measured BOD concentrations of the influent and effluent were 2,700ppm and 40ppm while the SS concentrations in the primary chamber and of the effluent were about 3,000 and 110 ppm, respectively. Zeolite and activated carbon, applied for removing the nitrogen and phosphorous, showed a good absorption, especially zeolite for NH$_4$-N and activated carbon for NO$_3$-N and PO$_4$-P. The treatment cost per head by this method amounts to 1,923 won and it comes to 1.6% in the whole production cost. Therefore, this method is economically available with the half cost of the conventional activated sludge process.

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of chaff as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor Control, Ch-1, Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the ascending of the highest reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast time of pH ascending. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast consistency in the weight and volume reduction rates. Salinities were condensed by reaction days. The final salinity of Control was 2.79%, and the final range of salinities of chaff mixtures was 2.18 - 2.37%.

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of rice straw as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction, porosity, C/N ratio, salinity, and conductivity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to rice straw in reactor control, RS-1, RS-2, RS-2 and RS-4 were 4:0, 4:1. 4:2. 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24days with 1 hour stirring by lrpm and 2hours aeration per day. The values of pH of food wastes and rice straw were 4.39 and 7.4, respectively. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to rice straw resulted in the high reaction temperature and the fast weight and volume reduction rates. C/N ratio in control was larger than that in rice straw containing reactors. Salinity and conductivity in reactors were condensed and increased by reaction days.
