  • Three-dimensional and time-dependent solution for the fluid flow and heat transfer past a circular cylinder with fins is obtained using accurate and efficient spectral methods. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multi-domain method with a corresponding Chebyshev collocation is used along r-z plane to handle fins attached to the surface of a circular cylinder. At the Reynolds number of 300 based on a cylinder diameter, results with fins are compared with those without fins in order to see the effects of the presence of fins on three-dimensional and unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer past a bluff body. The detail structures of fluid flow and temperature field are obtained as a function of time to investigate how the presence of fins changes heat transfer mechanism related to the vortical structure in the wake region.

  • The flow around a structure has been an important subject in wind engineering research. There are various kinds of unstable aerodynamic phenomena with regard to a bluff body. In order to understand the physical mechanism of aerodynamic and aeroelastic instability of a bluff body, the relations between the flow around structures and the motion of body with various section shapes should be investigated. Based on a series of wind tunnel tests, this paper addresses the aerodynamic stability of square cylinder with various corner cuts and attack angles in the uniform flow. The test results show that the models with corner cut produced generally better behaviour for the galloping phenomenon than the original section. However, the corner cut method can not prevent the occurrence of the vortex-induced vibration(VIV). It is also shown that as the attack angle changes, the optimum size of corner cut changes also. This means that any one specific size of corner cut which shows the best aerodynamic behaviour throughout all the cases of attack angles does not exist. This paper presents an intensive study on obtaining the optimum size of corner cut for the stabilization of aerodynamic behaviour of cylinders.

  • In this paper the unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with large structural displacement are solved by partitioned solution approaches in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element framework. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme. Both a rigid body and a geometrically nonlinear solid are considered as the structural models. The latter is solved by Newton-Raphson procedure. The equation governing the structural motion is advanced by Newmark-${\beta}$ method in time. The dynamic mesh is updated by using moving submesh approach that cooperates with the ortho-semi-torsional spring analogy method. A mass source term (MST) is introduced into the CBS scheme to satisfy geometric conservation law. Three partitioned coupling strategies are developed to take FSI into account, involving the explicit, implicit and semi-implicit schemes. The semi-implicit scheme is a mixture of the explicit and implicit coupling schemes due to the fluid projection splitting. In this scheme MST is renewed for interfacial elements. Fixed-point algorithm with Aitken's ${\Delta}^2$ method is carried out to couple different solvers within the implicit and semi-implicit schemes. Flow-induced vibrations of a bridge deck and a flexible cantilever behind an obstacle are analyzed to test the performance of the proposed methods. The overall numerical results agree well with the existing data, demonstrating the validity and applicability of the present approaches.

  • Ultrafine dust, which is emitted from industrial factories or all kinds of vehicles, threatens the human's respiratory system and our environment. In this regard, separating airborne particles is essential to mitigate the severe problem. In this work, an axial cyclone for the effective technology of eliminating harmful dust is investigated by numerical simulation using Ansys 2020, Fluent R2. In addition, the optimized structure of the cyclone is constructed by means of multi objective optimization based on the response surface method which is a representative method to analyze the effect of design parameter on response variables. Among several design parameters, the modified length of the vortex finder and dust collector is a main point in promoting the performance of the axial cyclone. As a result, the optimized cyclone exhibits remarkable performance when compared to the original model, resulting in pressure drop of 307 Pa and separator efficiency of 98.5%.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of a wing during fold motion were investigated in order to understand how variations or changes in such characteristics increase aircraft performance. Numerical simulations were conducted, and the results were obtained using the unsteady vortex lattice method to estimate the lift, drag and the moment coefficient in subsonic flow during fold motion. Parameters such as the fold angle and the fold angular velocity were summarized in detail. Generally, the lift and pitching moment coefficients decreased as the angle increased. In contrast, the coefficients increased as the angular velocity increased.

  • Recently, thanks to advanced computational power and numerical techniques, it is made possible to analyze the flow around moving bodies using computational fluid dynamics techniques. In those simulations, moving mesh techniques should be able to represent both the body motion and boundary deformation which are frequently encounterd in fluid-structure interaction and/of six degree-of-freedom problems. There are several moving mesh techniques such as the Laplacian operator based, tension spring based and elastic deformation based methods. In the present study, the Laplacian operator based method was utilized and the results were validated. For the validation, the flow around an oscillating two-dimensional cylinder was simulated and analyzed.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the influence of the spinning control cylinders which was set on the surface of a fixed circular cylinder in uniform flow, $Re=1.24\times10^4$. The measurements of velocity vectors and pressure distributions are carried out in various spin parameters and angles of spinning control cylinder. The results show that velocity profiles and pressure distributions are different with angles of control cylinder and spin parameters. When the control cylinder angle is $100^{\circ}$, there is more effect in increasing the velocity and the pressure distribution than other cases. In this case, the vortex shedding frequency was increased as increasing spin parameter.

  • A numerical prediction was performed to clarify the air motion in the cylinder of an axisymmet-ric four-stroke reciprocating engine at its intake and compression stage. A scheme of finite volume method is used for the calculation. Modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is adopted and wall function is applied to the grids near the wall. The predicted mean velocity and rms velocity profiles showed a reasonable agreement with an available experimental data at its intake and compression stage. The predicted in-cylinder flow fields show that a strong turbulent twin vortex structure is pro-duced during induction but it commences to decay rapidly around inlet valve closure. The mean velocity continues to fall to a low level during compression but the turbulence intensity attains an approximate constant level.

  • The stability problem of steady motion of a rigid body with multi-elastic appendages and multi-liquid-filled cavities, in the presence of no external forces or torque, is considered in this paper. The flexible appendages are modeled as the clamped -free-free-free rectangular plates, or/and as the discrete mass- spring sub-system. The motion of liquid in every single ellipsoidal cavity is modeled as the uniform vortex motion with a finite number of degrees of freedom. Assuming that stationary holonomic constraints imposed on the body allow its rotation about a spatially fixed axis, the equation of motion for such a systematic configuration can be very complex. It consists of a set of ordinary differential equations for the motion of the rigid body, the uniform rotation of the contained liquids, the motion of discrete elastic parts, and a set of partial differential equations for the elastic appendages supplemented by appropriate initial and boundary conditions. In addition, for such a hybrid system, under suitable assumptions, their equations of motion have four types of first integrals, i.e., energy and area, Helmholtz' constancy of liquid - vortexes, and the constant of the Poisson equation of motion. Chetaev's effective method for constructing Liapunov functions in the form of a set of first integrals of the equations of the perturbed motion is employed to investigate the sufficient stability conditions of steady motions of the complete system in the sense of Liapunov, i.e., with respect to the variables determining the motion of the solid body and to some quantities which define integrally the motion of flexible appendages. These sufficient conditions take into account the vortexes of the contained liquids, the vibration of the flexible components, and coupling among the liquid-elasticity solid.
