  • To elucidate the effects of alloying elements on the characteristics of microstructure and high temperature oxidation of cast austenitic stainless steel, a thermodynamic calculation, a cyclic oxidation test, a X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscopy-back scattered electron, a electron probe microanalysis were conducted. The thermodynamic calculation for the effect of vanadium (V) addition on the formation of various precipitates leads to a decrease of chromium (Cr)-rich $M_{23}C_6$ carbides due to the formation of M (C, N) carbo-nitrides containing V and / or niobium (Nb). The V added alloy increased the resistance to high temperature oxidation due to a decrease of Cr-depleted zone deteriorating the oxidation resistance and due to the V-enriched oxide layer formed in inner oxide layer blocking the outward transport of cations.

  • Room temperature oxidation of organic sulfides with polyvinylpyrrolidone-supported hydrogen peroxide (PVP-$H_2O_2$) in the presence of Mn(III) complexes of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin, Mn(TPP)X (X = OCN, SCN, OAc, Cl) and imidazole (ImH) leads to the highly chemoselective (ca. 90%) oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxide. The efficiency of reaction has been shown to be influenced by different reaction parameters such as the nature of counterion (X) and solvent as well as the molar ratio of reactants. Using Mn(TPP)OCN and ImH in 1:15 molar ratio and acetone as the solvent leads to the efficient oxidation of different sulfides.

  • Bioreactors are devices used by sewage treatment plants to process sewage and which produce active sludge, and sediments separated by solid-liquid are treated in anaerobic digestion tanks. In anaerobic digestion tanks, the volume of active sludge deposits is reduced and biogas is produced. After dehydrating the digestive sludge generated after anaerobic digestion, anaerobic digested wastewater, which features a high concentration of organic matters, is generated. In this study, the decomposition of organic carbon and nitrogen was studied by advanced oxidation process. Ozone-microbubble flotation process was used for oxidation pretreatment. During ozonation, the TOC decreased by 11.6%. After ozone treatment, the TOC decreased and the removal rate reached 80.4% as a result of the Ultra Violet-Advanced Oxidation Process (UV-AOP). The results with regard to organic substances before and after treatment differed depending on the organic carbon index, such as CODMn, CODCr, and TOC. Those indexes did not change significantly in ozone treatment, but decreased significantly after the UV-AOP process as the linkage treatment, and were removed by up to 39.1%, 15.2%, and 80.4%, respectively. It was confirmed that biodegradability was improved according to the ratio of CODMn to TOC. As for the nitrogen component, the ammonia nitrogen component showed a level of 3.2×102 mg/L or more, and the content was maintained at 80% even after treatment. Since most of the contaminants are removed from the treated water and its transparency is high, this water can be utilized as a resource that contains high concentrations of nitrogen.

  • Functionally gradient NiCrAlY/$ZrO_2$-$Y_2$$O_3$ and NiCrAlY/$ZrO_2$- $CeO_2$-$Y_2$$O_3$ coatings were prepared by APS. The as-sprayed microstructure consisted of metal-rich and ceramic-rich regions, between which $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layers existed owing to the oxidation during APS. During oxidation between 900 and $1100^{\circ}C$ in air, the pre-existing $Al_2$$O_3$-rich scales grew, due mainly to the preferential reaction of Al with inwardly transporting oxygen along the heterogeneous phase boundaries. As the amount of ceramics in the coating increased, the oxidation resistance increased.

  • An Si substrate (100) was oxidized at $400^{\circ}C$ in inductively coupled oxygen plasma. Interstitial oxygen was found in the Si substrate at the initial stage of oxidation by IR measurements. An x-ray rocking curve of Si substrates showed a lower peak intensity due to lattice distortion by the interstitial oxygen. The refractive index of thin oxides, below which interstitial oxygen existed in the Si substrate, was smaller than the refractive index of thick oxides, below which no interstitial oxygen existed. The interstitial oxygen was found by plasma oxidation using $O_{2}$ gas and $N_{2}O$ gas. The inductively coupled plasma oxidation using $N_{2}O$ gas was performed by atomic oxygen, not by molecular oxygen, indicating that atomic oxygen in plasma is responsible for the incorporation of interstitial oxygen.

  • Failure mechanisms of electron beam physical vapor deposited thermal barrier coatings(EB-PVD TBCs) that occur during thermal cyclic oxidation were investigated. The investigations include microstructural degradation of NiCrAIY bond coat, thermally grown oxides(TGOs) along the ceramic top coat-substrate interface and fracture path within TBCs. The microstructural degradation of the bond coat during cyclic oxidation created Al depleted zones, resulting in reduction of NiAl and ${\gamma}$-Ni solid solution phase. It was observed that the fracture took placed primarily within the TGOs or at the interfaces between TGOs and bond coat.

  • $FeCl_3$ solution has been used as an etchant for metal etching such as Fe, Cu, Al and Ni. In the etching process, $Fe^{3+}$ is reduced to $Fe^{2+}$ and the etching efficiency is decreased. Waste $FeCl_3$ etchant has environmental, economic problems and thus the regeneration of the etching solution has been required. In this study, HCl was mixed with the $FeCl_2$ solution and then, $H_2O_2$, $NaClO_3$ were added into the mixed solution to oxidize the $Fe^{2+}$. During the oxidation process, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was measured and the relationship between ORP and oxidation ratio was investigated. The ORP is increased with increasing the concentration of $H_2O_2$ and $NaClO_3$, and then the ORP is decreased with oxidation progress. Such a behavior was in good agreement with Nernst's equation. Also, the oxidation efficiency was about 99% when a sufficient amount of HCl and $H_2O_2$, $NaClO_3$ were added.

  • The $FeCl_3$ solution has been used as an etchant for etching of metal. It is necessary to reuse the etching solution because waste $FeCl_3$ etchant generated after use has provided environmental and economic problems. In this study, HCl was mixed with the $FeCl_2$ solution and then $H_2O_2$ was added into the mixed solution to oxidize the $Fe^{2+}$. During the oxidation process, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was measured and the relationship between ORP and oxidation ratio was investigated. As a result, this study found that the ORP was increased with increasing the concentration of HCl and $H_2O_2$, while the ORP is decreased with oxidation progress. Such a behavior was in good agreement with Nernst's equation. Also, the oxidation efficiency reached about 99% when a sufficient amount of HCl and $H_2O_2$ were added.

  • In this study, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method was used to from anodic oxide films on Al alloy and their resistance and morphological characteristics were investigated as a function of film formation voltage and treatment time. Cross-sectional morphology and composition of the PEO films were analyzed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy). The PEO films showed increased surface roughness and thickness with of film formation voltage and treatment time. The wear resistance was found to be the best for the PEO film formed for 5 min at 500V which is attributed to be denser structure relatively and lower surface roughness.

  • The study on the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) to carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) using the noble metals has long been the interest subject and the recent progress in nanoscience provides the opportunity to develop new model systems of catalysts in this field. Of the noble metal catalysts, we selected ruthenium (Ru) as metal catalyst due to its unusual catalytic behavior. The size of colloid Ru NPs was controlled by the concentration of Ru precursor and the final reduction temperatures. For catalytic activity of CO oxidation, it was found that the trend is dependent on the size of Ru NPs. In order to explain this trend, the surface oxide layer surrounding the metal core has been suggested as the catalytically active species through several studies. In this poster, we show the influence of surface oxide on Ru NPs on the catalytic activity of CO oxidation using chemical treatments including oxidation, reduction and UV-Ozone surface treatment. The changes occurring to UV-Ozone surface treatment will be characterized with XPS and SEM. The catalytic activity before and after the chemical modification were measured. We discuss the trend of catalytic activity in light of the formation of core-shell type oxide on nanoparticles surfaces.
