The purpose of this study was to evaluate new bone formation following guided bone regeneration by resorbable and nonresorbable membrane. Six adult mongrel dogs were used. The first, second, third, fourth premolars in the mandible of each dog were extracted. Two months after tooth extraction, a buccal dehiscence defect was surgically created on each edentulous area. The experimental sites were divided into three groups according to the treatment modalities ; Group I-a: surgical treatment only ; Group I -b: allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting ; Group II-a : e- PTFE membrane placement only ; Group II-b : allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting and e-PTFE membrane placement ; Group III-a : Vicryl(R) mesh placement only ; Group III-b : allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting and Vicryl(R) mesh placement . The animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after operation and the specimens were prepared for histologic and histometric examination. The results were as follows : Clinically, all defect sites were healed without exposure of barrier membrane after the eight weeks. In Group I-a, dense connective tissues were impinged in the bony defect area. Well vascularized and fibrous bone marrow indicated that bone formation was still taking place was found. In Group I-b, in areas closer to the periphery, lamellation of the newly formed bone would found. In Group II-a, beneath the e-PTFE membrane a dense layer of connective tissue covering the most external portions of the regenerated tissue was seen. The new bone surfaces were lined with osteoid and osteoblast. In Group II-b, a dense layer of connective tissue covering the most external portions of the regenerated tissue was observed beneath the e-PTFE membrane. A notable amount of alveolar ridge regeneration was seen with new rigdes with well-contoured form. In Group III-a, the new bone surface were lined with osteoid and osteoblast, indicating active bone formation. A clear demarcation could not be noted between the host bone and new bone. In Group III-b, a notable amount of alveolar ridge regeneration was seen with new ridges assuming wellcontoured form. In areas closer to the periphery, lamellation of the newly formed bone would found. As histometric examination, the amount of bone formation was gained from $12.8mm^2$ to $26.3mm^2$. It was significantly greater in group II-b and group III-b compared to other groups(p<0.05) . These results suggest that Vicryl(R) mesh after DFDB grafting used in guided bone regeneration could create and sustain sufficient space for new bone formation.
Metacercariae of the genus Stictodora encysted in the head tissue of Acanthogobius navimanus (the gobies) caught at Sachun-gun, Kyongnam Province, were identified to be Stictodora Zari Yamaguti, 1939 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae), a new parasite fauna in Korea. The metacercariae were 0.39∼,0.43 mm by 0.32∼0.35 mm in size, long elliptical, and with a thin and transparent cyst wall. Total 200 metacercariae were collected from 50 gobies. In order to obtain adult worms two kittens and a Puppy were infected each with 34∼100 metacercariae, and total 33 adults were recovered between the day 4 and day 8 post-infection. The S. sari adults measured 0.95∼1.18 mm long and 0.26∼0.32 mm wide and the eggs in uteri 0.028∼0.033 mm by 0.017∼0.020 mm. The most characteristic morphological feature of these flukes was the presence of a gonotyl and gonotyl spines arranged in two groups; densely crowded group of 30~40 spines and linearly-arranged one of 30∼40 spines, together of which made a comma(or reversed comma) shape along the lateral margin of the gonotyl. It has been proved by this study that 5. sari is distributed in southern coasts of Korea.
This study evaluated the myocardial performance on echocardiography after the sedation/anesthesia of medetomidine (D), the combination of medetomidine and tiletamine/zolazepam (DZ), and the combination of medetomidine, tiletamine/zolazepam and tramadol (DZT) in Beagle dogs. Ten healthy adult Beagle dogs (weighing $8.6{\pm}1.0kg$) were enrolled in this study. Heart rate (HR), fractional shortening (%FS), left ventricular ejection fraction (%LVEF), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), left ventricular internal diameter in systole (LVIDs) and left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (LVIDd) using M-mode echocardiography were measured prior to anesthesia, then every 10 min for 60 min. The HR, %FS, %LVEF, SV and CO were significantly decreased during sedation/anesthesia with D, DZ and DZT combination of anesthesia. Although those anesthetic protocols provided acceptable quality of sedation/anesthesia, levels of cardiovascular suppression were substantial and persistent and thus the continuous monitoring on vital signs should be accompanied in any situation. Close attention is required for dogs with pre-existing heart diseases, when those anesthetic protocols were applied.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether medetomidine (MED) and tiletamine/zolazepam (ZT) combination in dogs provide the sufficient analgesia during the period of the stage of surgical anesthesia determined by the response to the noxious stimuli, which were evaluated by the change of electroencephalogram (EEG) and hemodynamic values. Seven clinically healthy, adult beagle dogs were used. They were used repeatedly at interval of a week, according to a randomized design. This study had 2 experimental groups. In Group 1, dogs received $30\;{\mu}g/kg$ of medetomidine and 10 mg/kg of tiletamine/zolazepam. Both drugs were administered intramuscularly. In Group 2, dogs were medicated with the same method as in Group 1, except the pedal withdrawal reflex test was done. In Group 2, interdigital regions were grasped with a mosquito forceps for 30 seconds, every 5 min from 10 min to 45 min after ZT injection. During all recording stages, the power for each band, mean arterial pressure and heart rates were calculated. On EEG, no significant changes were observed between groups. Although mean arterial pressure and heart rate were increased 10 min after ZT injection, no significant differences were observed between groups. In conclusion, the MED and ZT anesthesia in dogs are seemed to provide a satisfactory analgesic effect during the period of surgical anesthesia based on EEG with pedal withdrawal reflex test.
Sequential bilateral lung transplantation may result in a variety of perioperative and postoperative complications, showing high perioperative morbidity and mortality rates. This research was performed to investigate the hemodynamic changes in adult mongrel dogs after bilateral reimplantation, two methods preferred for avoiding or minimizing graft rejection. The anterior portion of the pulmonary artery and the left atrium proximal to the superior and the inferior pulmonary veins were resected out and then re-anastomosed one hour later to prevent torsion or stenosis of the anastomotic site and the formation of a thrombosis in the left atrium. An everted suture technique was employed for the left atrium; An hour after the division, however, the main bronchus was tightly anastomose by interrupted sutures of No. 4-0 prolene in a telescope method. A modified I-C solution mixed with PGEI was infused into the cut portion of the pulmonary artery at the rate of 15 mllkglmin and at a pressure of 40 cmH20 for a total dosage of 70 mlfkg in order to preserve the transected lung. Topical cooling using wet gauzes soaked with cold I-C solution was performed for one hour to prevent ischemic lung injury. The above procedures are considered to be beneficial for achieving a satisfactory outcome for bilateral lung reimplantation.

Background: Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) can induce alterations in blood viscoelasticity and cause red blood cell (RBC) aggregation. In this study, the authors evaluated the effects of pump flow pulsatility on blood viscoelasticity and RBC aggregation. Methods: Mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to two groups: a nonpulsatile pump group (n=6) or a pulsatile pump group (n=6). After ECC was started at a pump flow rate of 80 mL/kg/min, cardiac fibrillation was induced. Blood sampling was performed before and at 1, 2, and 3 hours after ECC commencement. To eliminate bias induced by hematocrit and plasma, all blood samples were adjusted to a hematocrit of 45% using baseline plasma. Blood viscoelasticity, plasma viscosity, hematocrit, arterial blood gas analysis, central venous $O_2$ saturation, and lactate were measured. Results: The blood viscosity and aggregation index decreased abruptly 1 hour after ECC and then remained low during ECC in both groups, but blood elasticity did not change during ECC. Blood viscosity, blood elasticity, plasma viscosity, and the aggregation index were not significantly different in the groups at any time. Hematocrit decreased abruptly 1 hour after ECC in both groups due to dilution by the priming solution used. Conclusion: After ECC, blood viscoelasticity and RBC aggregation were not different in the pulsatile and nonpulsatile groups in the adult dog model. Furthermore, pulsatile flow did not have a more harmful effect on blood viscoelasticity or RBC aggregation than nonpulsatile flow.
The human temporomandibular joint as a ginglymoarthrodial one has much in common with the other synovial joints of the body, but it does possess an unique charachteristic in that it must accomodate the various occlusal relations of dentition during an end point of closure. For that reason, the movement of the condyle in the temporomandibular joint is susceptible to influences from the nature of occlusion. Undue loading to the temporomandibular joint can be applied on the occasion of premature contacts in centric relation, balancing side interferences, change of occlusal surfaces due to excessive attrition, loss of tooth. Such occlusal disharmonies in association with the systemic and emotional factors may give rise to the temporomandibular disorder. On the other hand, the changes of occlusal patterns in the growing body can also have an effect on the growth of the temporomandibular joint through the alterations of functional stresses. The purpose of this study was to observe histopathologic response of the temporomandibular joint in unilateral chewing on one side exclusively for 10 months. Three dogs showing normal masticatory function were chosen. One dog aged about 12 months was for control, two dogs for experimental specimens were about 12 and 18 months old respectively. For chewing on the left side only, unilateral lower right premolar and molar were extracted in two experimental specimens. And then three dogs were sacrificed 10 months later. Frontal histologic sectioning of joints were done for the observation of the effects of one-side chewing. 24 specimens from three dogs were obtained and fixed in 10% formalin and routinly processed with H-E staining for histologic examination. The light microscopic findings were interpretated as follows: 1. Experimental specimen 1 aged about 22 months: In comparison with control and right non-chewing side, the proliferative and hypertrophic zone were increased at the mesial and lateral part of left chewing side condyle. There was no change of the articular tissue of temporal bone. 2. Experimental specimen 2 aged about 28 months: The articular tissues of adult joint were observed. The differences between the chewing and non-chewing side were not seen in the articular tissues of condyle and temporal bone.

This study was performed to assess therapeutic effect of the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) in dogs with experimentally transected cranial cruciate ligaments (CrCL). Nine healthy adult Beagle dogs were transected left CrCL under general anesthesia. The dogs were assigned to TPLO and non-TPLO control groups. The TPLO procedures for correcting the CrCL rupture in the left stifle of dogs were performed under sterile conditions. Before TPLO procedures, all dogs were screened by orthopedic and radiographic examinations. Dogs were lameness free for the previous three months, and when examined at the walk and trot on a hard surface, in a straight line and on a circle. Lateral and craniocaudal radiographs were done to confirm the soundness of the both knee joint in dogs and not detectable lesions were diagnosed. The dogs were intravenously injected with a 10 mci/kg of 99mTechnetium-methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) under general anesthesia. Scintigraphs were obtained using a large field of view gamma camera equipped a parallel-hole, low-energy about 3 hours after intravenous injection of 99mTc-MDP. Before CrCL transection and 4, 8, and 12 weeks after the procedures, scintigraphy were conducted. Bone uptake of the left stifle joint increased after the procedures in all dogs. When the bone uptake from the TPLO procedure was compared with that of the control, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05). At 12 weeks after the TPLO procedure, the dogs showed normal anatomical posture and gait. It is concluded that TPLO procedure was effective in reconstruct of the stifle joint in dogs with CrCL rupture.
This study was performed to evaluate the sensitivity of conventional film-screen radiography (CFSR) and direct digital radiography (DDR) for detection of various amounts of free peritoneal fluid. Ten adult male healthy beagles were used in this study. Radiographic examinations were performed in the right lateral and ventrodorsal positions. Fluid was injected in increments of 2.0 ml/kg of body weight up to 20.0 ml/kg of body weight. The images of CFSR and DDR were evaluated by two veterinary radiologists for evidence of abdominal fluid without knowledge of injected fluid volume. Data were evaluated by using the receiver operation curve (ROC) analysis and the area under the curve (AUC). There was no significant difference in detection of peritoneal fluid between DDR and CFSR in the ROC analysis. The accuracy of CFSR (0.805) was relatively higher than that of DDR (0.733), based on the ROC analysis and AUC. AUC of CFSR was higher in most injection doses. These results suggest that CFSR is more accurate than DDR for the detecting peritoneal fluid. Therefore, for situation in which digital radiographs are equivocal or small amount of fluid is suspected, other imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography would be helpful for determining the presence of fluids.
The aims of this study were to investigate the anesthetic effects of medetomidine-midazolam-ketamine (MMK) combination and to compare antagonistic effects of atipamezole and yohimbine in dogs anesthetized with MMK. Eighteen adult male healthy beagles were used in this study. All dogs were anesthetized with intramuscular (IM) administration of medetomidine (0.04 mg/kg), midazolam (0.2 mg/kg) and ketamine (5 mg/kg) in one syringe. Intravenous (IV) administration of atipamezole (0.24 mg/kg, MMKA), yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg, MMKY) or saline solution (0.1 ml/kg, MMK) was administered 20 minutes after MMK combination anesthesia. Induction and recovery times, scores of sedation and analgesia, heart rate, blood pressure, rectal temperature, respiratory rate and blood gases were determined and recorded for each dog. Mean anesthesia times, sternal recumbency times, standing times and walking times in the MMKA and MMKY groups were significantly shorter than those in the MMK group. But there were not significantly different between MMKA and MMKY groups. In all groups, MMK administration produced a satisfactory sedation and analgesia for all dogs. However, after administration of atipamezole or yohimbine the scores for posture and response to noxious stimuli were significantly lower in the MMKA or MMKY group than those in the MMK group. MMK produced good sedation and anesthesia effects, and atipamezole or yohimbine can be used as a safe and effective agent for antagonizing the MMK anesthesia in dogs.
