  • The purpose of this study is to promote utilization of paper mill sludge as an adsorbent for stabilizing heavy metals in contaminated water by measuring the adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cadmium and arsenic. To measure adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge, sorption isotherm experiments were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Also, two methods of chemical modifications were applied to improve the adsorption capacities of paper-mill-sludge: the first method used sodium hydroxide (NaOH), called PMS-1, and the second method used the NaOH and tartaric acid ($C_4H_6O_6$) together, called PMS-2. For Cd adsorption, PMS-1 presented the increase of reactivity while PMS-2 presented the decline of reactivity compared to that of untreated paper-mill-sludge. In case of As adsorption, both PMS-1 and PMS-2 showed the decrease of adsorption capacities. This is because zeta-potential of paper mill sludge was changed to more negative values during chemical modification process due to the hydroxyl group in NaOH and the carboxyl group in $C_4H_6O_6$, respectively. Therefore, we may conclude that the chemical treatment process increases adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cation heavy metals such as Cd but not for As.

  • Ever increasing global energy demand gives rise to uncontrollable environmental pollution. Demand on fossil fuel and consequent carbon emission leads to global warming and climate change. Nuclear energy is an alternative source to generate clean energy but mining of nuclear fuel is associated with harmful chemicals. Mining of valuable minerals from sea water by membrane separation process is a cost effective along with environmental friendly process. Separation and adsorption based mining of valuable minerals from sea water are another efficient process. Recovery of actinides from rare earth elements are very challenging and expensive process. Pressure driven membrane separation process is economically more viable along with environmental process. In this review membrane separation process are based on polyether sulfone, polyamide, polyimide, polyamidoxine and hybrid membranes. In case of adsorption process, mainly amidoxime kind of adsorbent are discussed.

  • In the present study, batch experiments were carried out for the utilizatioin of activated carbon as a potential adsorbent to remove a hazardous malachite green from an aqueous solution. The effects of various parameters such as temperature, contact time, initial concentration on the adsorption system were investigated. On the basis of adsorption data Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model were also confirmed. The equilibrium process was described well by Langmuir isotherm model. From determined separation factor, the activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment for removal of malachite green. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with increasing both the initial concentration of malachite green and the adsoprtion temperature. Thermodynamic parameters like that activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the adsorption nature. The activation energy calculated from Arrhenius equation indicated that the adsortpion of malachite green on the zeolite was physical process. The negative Gibbs free energy change ($\Delta$G = -3.68~-7.76 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change ($\Delta$H = +26.34 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K.

  • In order to separate the Freon-12 and air mixture$(CF_2Cl_2/Air=0.1/99.9 vol.%)$ by pressure swing adsorption (PSA), the breakthrough curve was experimentally observed in a fixed bed adsorption column. A single adsorber was packed with various adsorbents such as, the activated carbon(S-AC, W-AC) and the molecular sieve(MS-5A, MS-13X). The order of appearance of breakthrough curve is MS-5A > MS-13X > W-AC > S-AC. The activated carbon was found to be more effective adsorbent for separating Freon-12 from the mixture than the molecular sieve was. From the experimental data obtained by the separation of Freon-12 gas out of the air stream in the steady-state PSA process cycle, whose size is the same one of column used for the breakthrough curve observation, it has been confirmed that Freon-rich gas could be obtained from the purge step of PSA and Freon-free air could be obtained from the adsorption step of PSA cycle.

  • This study was performed to select media for the development of biological activated carbon process. Using activated carbon made by Norit, Calgon, Samchully Co., removal efficiency of humic acid by the isothermal adsorption test and biodegradation of organic matters by microbes attached to BAC and observation and counting of microbes attached to BAC were examined. The removal efficiency of humic acid with dose of activated carbon was influenced by initial concentration. Compared with other activated carbon, Norit was found to be most effective in view of adsorption capacity, biodegradation of organic matter, and attachment characteristics of microorganism. In conclusion, Norit which has high adsorption capacity and good biodegradation of organic matter was recommended for selecting media in BAC process.

  • The adsorption of oxygen on ZnO was monitored by measuring the capacitance of two contacting crystals which have depletion layers originated from the interaction between oxygen and ZnO at 298 K-473 K. An admission of oxygen to the sample induced an irreversible increase in the depth and the amount of adsorbed oxygen was less than 0.001 monolayer in the experimental condition. The relation between pressure of oxygen and variation of the depth was tested from the view point of Langmuir or Freundlich isotherm. Using Hall effect measurement and kinetic experiment, a model equation on the adsorption process was proposed. From the results, it was suggested that oxygen adsorption depended on the rate of electron transfer from ZnO to oxygen while the amount of adsorbed oxygen was kinetically restricted by the height of surface potential barrier.

  • The self-assembled formation of octadecanethiol (CH3(CH2)17SH) on a gold substrate was studied using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). From the QCM measurements at vario us concentrations of octadecanethiol solutions in hexane and alcohol, the adsorption process of octadecanethiol onto Au was confirmed to consist of two steps as follows: (i) fast but disordered adsorption and (ii) a thermodynamically controlled rearrangement for uniform packing of octadecanethiol. Also, it was revealed that the adsorption rate became faster in ethanol than in hexane since less solubility of octadecanethiol in ethanol could help the formation of the monolayers. At 5 ${\times}$10-7 M solution, the monolayer formation was monitored by STM. The morphology of monolayer region was initially circular (diameter size: 7.26 $\pm$ 2.1 nm) and gradually changed to a stripe type after several minutes. At higher concentration, the self-assembled monolayer was formed immediately after the solution was introduced to a substrate.

  • The trajectories of adsorption and dissociation process of $O_2$ on the Al (111) surface were studied by the spinpolarized ab initio molecular dynamics method, and the adsorption activation energy was clarified by the NEB method with hybrid functionals. Three typical dissociation trajectories were found through simulation of $O_2$ molecule at different initial positions. When vertically approaches to the Al surface, the $O_2$ molecule tends to rotate, and the activation energy is 0.66eV. If $O_2$ molecule does not rotate, the activation energy will increase to 1.43 eV, and it makes the O atom enter the Al sublayer eventually. When the $O_2$ molecules parallel approach to the Al surface, there is no activation energy, due to the huge energy released during the adsorption process.

  • In this study, the extent of water removal in the high-moisture coal was measured. The simplified adsorption model was developed to predict the extent of water removal. The water removal was observed to increase up to 25% at saturation condition of 25℃. The modeling work shows that adsorption contributes the water removal only by 3%, whereas other factors such as CO2 solubility and wettability would be responsible for the water removal.
