The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslink on adsorption of metal ions by resin(cryptand resin) adsorbent were investigated. The metal ions were showed fast adsorption on the resins in over pH 3. The equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours and the adsorption selectivity determined in methanol was in increasing order $UO^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ > $Gd^{3+}$ ion. The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2% and 5% crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.

Fluoride removal by acid and heat treated red mud were studied in batch and column system regarding contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and filter depth. The results showed that acid treated with 0.8 M HCl, had highest adsorption capacity of fluoride and adsorption capacity decreased as heat treatment temperature increased. Sorption equilibrium reached in 30 min at a initial concentration of 50 mg-F/L but 1 h was required to reach the sorption equilibrium at the initial concentration of 500 mg-F/L by 0.8 M acid treated red mud (0.8 M-ATRM). Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 23.162 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption decreased as pH increased due to the fluoride competition for favorable adsorption site with $OH^-$ at higher pH. Removal percentage was increased but the amount of adsorption per unit mass decreased by adding the amount of 0.8 M-ATRM. It was concluded that the 0.8 M-ATRM could be used as a potential adsorbent for the fluoride removal from aqueous solutions because of its high fluoride adsorption capacity and low cost.
Quantitative measurements have been made by using equilibrium dialysis techniques on the extent of complexation between PCB and dissoved humic acid(HA). This research investigates the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorption for the removal of PCB from organic free water and humid acid background solution by using bench-scale equilibrium and rate tests. It was found that the extent of complexation depended on the pH, calcium concentration, ionic strength, and the concentration of humic acid. When HA was present, activated carbon capacity was greatly reduced due to complexation and competitive adsorption effects and the adsorption characteristics became complicated by the presence of various species such as the unassociated HA, PCB, and PCB-HA complexes.

An Amberlite XAD-4 resin impregnated with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid was prepared and its adsorption-desorption behaviors with Sr(II) ions under various conditions was examined. The resin was characterized by fourier transform infrared and thermal analysis techniques. The effects contact time, temperature, pH, interfering ions and eluants were studied. Results showed that adsorption of Sr (II) well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data of Sr (II) on the impregnated resin were analyzed by Jossens, Weber-van Vliet, Redlich-Peterson and Fritz-Schlunder models to find out desirable equilibrium condition. Among them, the Fritz-Schlunder model best fitted to the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity of impregnated resin amounted to 0.45 mg/ g at pH 8.0 and $20^{\circ}C$.
Porous carbon with high surface area and pore volume was prepared by a reverse replication process and its toluene equilibrium adsorption behavior was investigated. The preparation process of the porous carbon was composed of fellowing sub-processes in series: synthesis and template preparation of silica gel, impregnation and polymerization of DVB monomer in silica template, carbonization of DVB polymer in a silica-polymer composite, and HF-assisted selective etching of silica in carbon-silica composite. The prepared porous carbon was nano porous and had ultrahigh specific surface area (2007 ㎡/g) and large pore volume (3.07 ㎤/g). The nanoporous carbon showed rapid toluene adsorption rate and good toluene adsorption capacity, compared with a commercial Y-type zeolite. In the present study, a reverse replication process to prepare nanoporous carbons will be introduced and its application potential as a gas adsorbent will be discussed.
The Langmuir competitive model and the IAS(ideal adsorption solution) model were eveluated and compared in a multisolute adsorption study using five organic compounds (phenol, 2, 4-dichlorophenol, 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenot brucine, and thiourea) and two soils. The chemicals were evaluated individually and in mixtures. In general, the IfS model predicted the equilibrium concentration of a chemical in a mixture better than the Langmuir model. The Langmuir model underestimated the sorption of phenol when the concentration of another compound in a mixture with phenol was high. Neither of the models predicted satisfactorily the equilibrium concentration of thiourea in the mixtures. Thiourea is an aliphatic compound while the other four chemicals are aromatic compounds.
An activated carbon was tested for its ability to remove transition metal ions from aqueous solutions. Physical, chemical and liquid-phase adsorption characterizations of the carbon were done following standard procedures. Studies on the removal of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions were attempted by varying adsorbate dose, pH of the metal ion solution and time in batch mode. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted with Freundlich and Langmuir and the isotherm constants were evaluated, equilibrium time of the different three metal ions were determined. pH was found to have a significant role to play in the adsorption. The processes were endothermic and the thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. Desorption studies indicate that ion-exchange mechanism is operating.
Biocarrier beads with dead biomass, Bacillus drentensis, immobilized in polymer polysulfone were synthesized to remove heavy metals from wastewater. To identify the sorption mechanisms and theoretical nature of underlying processes, a series of batch experiments were carried out to quantify the biosorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by the biocarrier beads. The parameters obtained from the thermodynamic analysis revealed that the biosorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by biomass immobilized in biocarrier beads was a spontaneous, irreversible, and physically-occurring adsorption phenomenon. Comparing batch experimental data to various adsorption isotherms confirmed that Koble-Corrigan and Langmuir isotherms well represented the biosorption equilibrium and the system likely occurred through monolayer sorption onto a homogeneous surface. The maximum adsorption capacities of the biocarrier beads for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were calculated as 0.3332 and 0.5598 mg/g, respectively. For the entire biosorption process, pseudo-second-order and Ritchie second-order kinetic models were observed to provide better descriptions for the biosorption kinetic data. Application of the intra-particle diffusion model showed that the intraparticle diffusion was not the rate-limiting step for the biosorption phenomena. Overall, the dead biomass immobilized in polysulfone biocarrier beads effectively removed metal ions and could be applied as a biosorbent in wastewater treatment.
Resistances to pitting corrosion of additive manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V alloys in 0.6 M NaBr and 0.6 M NaCl aqueous solutions were compared using micro-droplet cell techniques. With respect to the pitting corrosion resistance, this study focused on two different types of halide anions in aqueous solutions, i.e. $Br^-$ and $Cl^-$. The differences between $Br^-$ and $Cl^-$ halide anions for breakdown on passive films of AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy were explained using Langmuir adsorption model with their equilibrium adsorption coefficients. The results of the analysis showed that the lower resistance to pitting potential of AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy in $Br^-$ aqueous solution was attributed to the higher equilibrium adsorption coefficient of Br-. In addition, micro-electrochemical test results showed that the pitting corrosion resistance of dark grains in additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy was lower as compared to that of bright grains due to the larger volume of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase that caused the susceptibility to pit initiation.
Biosorption of Pb was evaluated for plants, Persicaria chinensis, Oenanthe javanica and Salvinia natnas. The adsorption equilibrium was reached in about 1hr for Pb and the highest adsorption capacity was 150mg Pb/g biomass at S.natans. Pb adsorption process showed a pseudo second order irreversible reaction. The highest initial adsorption rate was 2000mg pb/g biomass/hr at O.javanica. In spite of pH variation, Pb adsorption capacity by was selection, Pb was selectively adsorved. The selectivity of mixture solution showed the adsorption order of Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. The Pb adsorption capacity of P. chinensis pretreated with NaOH was increased by 30% in comparison with that of no treatment.
