We investigated the possibility of using graphene for control of hydrogen isotopes by exploring adsorption, reflection, and penetration of hydrogen isotopes on graphene using molecular dynamics. Reflection is the dominant interaction when hydrogen isotopes have low incident energy. Adsorption rates increase with increasing incident energy until 5 eV is reached. After 5 eV, adsorption rates decrease as incident energy increases. At incident energies greater than 5 eV, adsorption rates increase with the number of graphene layers. At low incident energies (<1 eV), no isotopic effects on interactions are observed since the predominant interaction is derived from the force of π electrons. Between 1 eV and 50 eV, heavier isotopes exhibit higher adsorption rates and lower reflection rates than lighter isotopes, due to the greater momentum of heavier isotopes. Adsorption rates are consistently higher when the incident angle of the impacting atoms is smaller between 0.5 eV and 5 eV. At higher energies (>5 eV), larger incident angles lead to higher reflection and lower penetration rates. At high incident energies (>5 eV), crumpled graphene has higher adsorption and lower penetration rates than wrinkled or unwrinkled graphene. The results obtained in this research study will be used to develop novel nanomaterials that can be employed for tritium control.

Chloride ion, which penetrates into the cement composites from the outside, generally diffuses by the concentration gradient. Chloride ions are adsorbed by the chemical reaction with cement hydrates. Recent studies have shown that anion exchange resin (AER) powder can effectively adsorb the chloride ion in the cement composites, and thus, the cement composites containing AER have a high chloride adsorption capacity and a good resistance for chloride penetration. In this study, the chloride adsorption ability of the AER powder was investigated under the conditions of distilled water and calcium hydroxide saturated solution to determine if the AER powder is less effective to increase the chloride adsorption ability after grinding process. The chloride adsorption ability of AER powder was compared with the previous research about the chloride adsorption of AER bead. In addition, the compressive strength, chloride diffusion coefficient (using NT Build 492 method), and the chloride profile of cement mortar substituted with AER powder were investigated. There was no decrease in the chloride adsorption capacity of AER powder but increase in the kinetic property for chloride adsorption after the grinding process. The AER powder could absorb the chloride ion in the mortar quickly, and showed better chloride ion adsorption ability than the cement hydrates.
The chloride ions, responsible for the initiation of the corrosion mechanism, intrude from the external medium into the concrete. A part of the intruding chloride ions will be retained by the hydration products of the binder in concrete, either through chemical adsorption or by physical adsorption. Since the hydration products of cement are responsible for the chloride binding in concrete, this study focused on the chloride binding in individual hydrate. The purpose of this study is to explore the time dependant behaviors of chloride ions adsorption with cement hydrates, focused on its mechanism. AFt phase and CH phase were not able to absorb chloride ion, however, C-S-H phase and AFm phase had a significant chloride adsorption capacity. In particular, AFm phase showed a chemical adsorption with slow rate in 40 days, while C-S-H phase showed binding behaviors with 3 stages including momentary physical adsorption, physico-chemical adsorption, and chemical adsorption. Based on the results, this study suggested theoretical approach to depict chloride adsorption behavior with elapsed time of C-S-H phase and AFm phase effectively. It is believed that the approach suggested in this study can provide us with a good solution to understand the mechanism on chloride adsorption with hydrates and to calculate a rate of chloride penetration with original source of chloride ions, for example, marine sand at initial time or sea water penetration later on.

Factors influencing penetration kinetics of PVAm solution into paper were investigated with ultrasonic Penetration Evenness Analyzer (PEA). Paper structure was varied by changing basis weight, freeness of pulp, calendering, number of plies and filler addition and hydrophobicity of paper was varied by adding AKD. Important factors affecting liquid penetration are found to be pore structure and hydrophobicity of paper. Pore structure of paper can be designed by controlling refining degree and filler addition. Hydrophobicity of paper can be controlled by internal sizing.
Many commercial air purifiers currently have deployed granular activated carbon (GAC) filters for removing volatile organic compounds in the indoor air. GACs are generally used to remove gaseous contaminants in the air through adsorption by the inner surfaces of pores. In addition, airborne particles can be also filtered by the surface adsorption of the GACs, which can improve the life-time of the particulate filters. In this study, the filtration efficiency of GACs to ultrafine particles through surface adsorption was investigated at different volume flow rates by deploying a continuous particle filtration system. The polydisperse sodium chloride (NaCl) particles were generated by a set of an atomizer and a diffusion dryer, and then mixed with particle-free air at different volume flow rates. The penetration of ultrafine particles and pressure drop for each experimental condition were measured to figure out the effect of the volume flow rate on the surface adsoprtion of the GACs to particles, ~ 2 mm. The particle filtration efficiency of the GACs decreased as the volume flow rate increased from 4 to 14 lpm. However, the 5 times thicker GAC filter layer decreased the penetration of ultraparticles than a preious study. The filtration efficiency of the single granule was also higher than the previous result in the literature with smaller granule filter materials.

The new system for identification of organic vapours and analysis method of mechanism between organic vapours and sensitive materials were attempted using the resonant resistance and resonant frequency of Quartz Crystal Analyzer (Q. C. A.). The resonant resistance shift means rheological changes in sensitive LB films occurred by the adsorption of organic vapours, while the resonant frequency shift represent the mass of organic vapour loaded in or on the sensitive LB films. It is thought that we can obtain more accurate response mechanism of organic vapour using the resonant frequency and resonant resistance diagram. The polymeric sensitive material were quantitively depositied using the LB method. In the experimental results, the adsorption behavior of organic vapour response can be decided by two type ; surface adsorption and penetration into sensitive material. Organic vapours had different positions in the Frequency-Resistance (F-R) diagram as to the kinds and concentrations of organic vapours. Thus F-R diagram can be applied to the development of one channel gas sensing system using the Quartz Crystal Analyzer.

Starch is widely used as an adhesive material in the paper and corrugated board industry. The adhesion problem of corrugated board is categorized by two main parts called zipper board and white glue line. The object of this research is to investigate the factors affecting the adhesion problem by the gelatinization of various starch solutions and dynamic penetration properties measurements of various commercial base paper and handsheets. Flow property of starch solution is affected by sodium hydroxide addition and reaction level. Absorption property of commercial base papers and handsheets is affected by sizing and stock composition. Optimum bonding between top/bottom liners and corrugated medium is accomplished by acceptable flow viscosity of mixed starch solution and proper adsorption characteristic of base paper.

We deposited stearic acid LB films by using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)method and investigated anisotropy electrical conduction characteristics by I-V measurement for horizontal direction and vertical direction. Also, we measured gad response between deposited LB films and organic gas for various temperature(0~8$0^{\circ}C$) by 9MHz At-cut quartz crystal microbalance. The LB films have electrical conduction characteristics such as semiconducting and insulating properties. The is, the conductivity of LB films for the horizontal and vertical direction is about 10\ulcornerS/cm and 10\ulcorners/cm, respectively. the frequency shift of stearic acid LB films for the organic gases depended on the mass change by the surface adsorption and the inner penetration to the sensing films. The resonant frequency shift of the quartz crystal microbalance for temperature properties of LB films is thought to the effect of the rearrangement or the damage pf LB films above the melting point and the mobility increasement of the organic gas by the temperature rising.

This study used two types of rheology modifiers including an alkali-swellable emulsion (ASE) and an surface-adhesion emulsion (SAE) to elucidate their effects on high shear viscosity and dynamic penetration behavior among the flow properties of high solids coating. Since rheology under high shear and dynamic penetration behavior significantly affect the quality of coated paper in case of high solids coating, it is very important to examine the variations in rheology of high solids coating color by rheology modifier. It was found that the high solids coating color prepared with the SAE type showed superior dynamic penetration behavior and high shear viscosity than that with the ASE type rheology modifier.
Hydrogen permeation through dense palladium-based membranes has attracted the attention of many scientists largely due to their unmatched potential as hydrogen-selective membranes for membrane reactor applications. Although it is well known that the permeation mechanism of hydrogen through Pd involves various processes such as dissociative adsorption, transitions to and from the bulk Pd, diffusion within Pd, and recombinative desorption, it is still unclear which process mainly limits hydrogen permeation at a given temperature and hydrogen partial pressure. In this study, we report an all-electron density-functional theory study of hydrogen permeation through Pd membrane (using VASP code). Especially, we focus on the variation of the energy barrier of the penetration process from the surface to the bulk with hydrogen coverage, which means the large reduction of the fracture stress in the brittle crack propagation considering Griffith's criterion. It is also found that the penetration energy barrier from the surface to the bulk largely decreases so that it almost vanishes at the coverage 1.25, which means that the penetration process cannot be the rate determining process.
