Mechanisms of Na adsorption on graphene and graphene oxide: density functional theory approach

  • We investigated the adsorption of Na on graphene and graphene oxide, which are used as anode materials in sodium ion batteries, using density functional theory. The adsorption energy for Na on graphene was -0.507 eV at the hollow sites, implying that adsorption was favorable. In the case of graphene oxide, Na atoms were separately adsorbed on the epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups. The adsorption of Na on graphene oxide-epoxide (adsorption energy of -1.024 eV) was found to be stronger than the adsorption of Na on pristine graphene. However, the adsorption of Na on graphene oxide-hydroxyl resulted in the generation of NaOH as a by-product. Using density of states (DOS) calculations, we found that the DOS of the Na-adsorbed graphene was shifted down more than that of the Na-adsorbed graphene oxide-epoxide. In addition, the intensity of the DOS around the Fermi level for the Na-adsorbed graphene was higher than that for the Na-adsorbed graphene oxide-epoxide.

  • In this study, we prepared the magnesium oxide decorated ordered mesoporous carbons processed by the reduction of magnesium oxide precursor on the CMK-3 surfaces in order to investigate the characterization and the effect on their carbon dioxide adsorption behaviors. The magnesium contents of the prepared samples were characterized using XPS. The textural properties of the prepared samples were investigated by $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms by BET equation. The carbon dioxide adsorption capacities of the prepared samples were investigated by the amounts of carbon dioxide adsorptions at 298 K and 1.0 atm. The results showed that the magnesium oxide on the CMK-3 surface enhanced interaction between carbon dioxide and adsorbents. Consequently, it was found that the magnesium oxide led to an increase in the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of the CMK-3.

전이금속 산화물이 고정된 하이드로탈사이트에 이산화질소 흡착 (Adsorption of Nitrogen Dioxide on Transition-Metal-Oxide-Incorporated Hydrotalcites)

  • 전이금속 산화물의 전구체가 들어있는 합성모액을 수열 반응시켜 전이금속 산화물이 고정된 하이드로탈사이트를 제조하여 이들에 대한 이산화질소의 흡착 성질을 조사하였다. 전이금속 산화물의 분산도, 이산화질소의 흡착량 및 흡착상태를 XRD, SEM, XPS, 질소 흡착등온선, 중량식 흡착법, FT-IR, 승온탈착법으로 조사하였다. 전이금속 산화물은 주로 하이드로탈사이트의 표면에 분산 담지되었으며, 철과 니켈 산화물이 고정된 하이드로탈사이트에 이산화질소가 많이 흡장되었다. 철 산화물이 표면에 분산되어 담지되면 이산화질소의 흡장량이 많지만, 철 산화물이 지나치게 많이 담지되면 덩어리져서 표면의 염기점을 차폐하므로 이산화질소의 흡장량이 오히려 줄어들었다. 철 산화물의 고정량이 적절하면 하이드로탈사이트에서 이산화질소의 흡장세기는 약해지지만, 흡장량은 많아지고 수열 안정성이 증진되었다.

재생 알루미늄 산화물을 이용한 비소 흡착 특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Arsenic using the Recycled Aluminium Oxide)

  • As(V) adsorption on aluminum oxide powder which was recycled from industrial wastes containing aluminum hydroxide was evaluated. Aluminum oxide powder in this study was prepared by calcinating aluminum hydroxide wastes at$550^{\circ}C$. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the aluminum hydroxide wastes were changed to aluminum oxide by calcination. Arsenic adsorption isotherm was conducted with variation of ionic strength and multiple-ion systems using Ca(II) and Cu(II). As(V) removal showed typical anionic adsorption characteristics that the removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH in single As(V) system as well as in binary and ternary system. More than 80% of As(V) at an initial concentration of $5{\times}10^{-5}$ M was removed from aluminum oxide powder in As(V) single system. The effect of ionic strength on As(V) adsorption was negligible, which indicated the strong bonding between aluminum oxide powder and As(V). The removal efficiency of As(V) was higher in a binary system with Cu(II) than in a binary system with Ca(II).

양극산화 공정을 이용한 Iron Oxide Nanotubes의 제조 및 수중 인 흡착 (Fabrication of Iron Oxide Nanotubes by Anodization for Phosphorus Adsorption in Water)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characterization of iron oxide nanotubes (INTs) by anodization method and applied adsorption isotherms and kinetic models for phosphate adsorption. SEM analysis was conducted to examine the INTs surface formation. Further XRD and XPS analysis were performed to observe the crystal structure of INTs before and after phosphate adsorption. AFM analysis was conducted to determine of Fe foil surface before and after anodization. Phosphate stock solution for adsorption experiment was prepared by $KH_2PO_4$. The batch experiment was conducted using 20 ml phosphate stock solution and $40cm^3$ of INTs in 50 ml conical tube. Adsorption isotherms were applied Langmuir and Freundlich models for adsorption equilibrium test of INTs. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of adsorption rate by reaction time. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) values of Langmuir and Freundlich models were 0.9157 and 0.8876 respectively.

Modeling As(III) and As(V) adsorption and transport from water by a sand coated with iron-oxide colloids

  • Tile development of a porous iron-oxide coated sand filter system can be modelled with the analytical solution of tile transport equation in order to obtain the operating parameters and investigate the mechanism of arsenic removal. The adsorbed amount from the model simulation showed the limitation of adsorption removal during arsenic transport. A loss reaction term in the transport equation plays a role in the mass loss in column conditions, and then resulted into the better model fitting, particularly, for arsenate. Further, the competitive oxyanions delayed the breakthrough near MCL (10 $\mu$g/L) due to the competitive adsorption. This is the reason why arsenate can be strongly attracted in tile interface of an iron-oxide coated sand, and competing oxyanions can occupy the adsorption sites. Therefore, arsenic retention was regulated by non-equilibrium of arsenic adsorption in a porous iron-oxide coated sand media. The transport-limited process seemed to be affect the arsenic adsorption by coated sand.

  • Metal oxide particles with mole ratio of aluminum: titanium of 1:1 were synthesized by a sol-gel method. Langmuir (a) and Freundlich (b) adsorption isotherms of dissolved lead [Pb(Ⅱ)] ion on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium were determined as follows, respectively,(a) , (b) at pH 6where, correlation coefficients (R2) of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were 0.95 and 0.96, respectively.The overall adsorption rate of Pb(Ⅱ) on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium was determined by a differential bed reactor. The overall adsorption rate at pH 6 was as a following equation.at pH 6

Fe-Mn-Si 산화물을 이용한 인제거 흡착연구 (Phosphate removal using novel combined Fe-Mn-Si oxide adsorbent)

  • 국내 하수처리장 인 방류기준이 강화되어 다양한 방법의 인 제거기술이 적용되고 있다. 흡착은 비교적 간단하면서 효과적으로 인을 제거할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 흡착제인 Fe-Mn-Si oxide와 Fe-Mn oxide을 개발하여, 인 제거효율을 검토하였으며 이 흡착제에 대하여 Kinetic과 Isotherm모델을 비교하였다. 두 흡착제의 최대흡착양은 각각 47.8, 35.5 mg-$PO{_4}^{3-}/g$이었고, 이들은 낮은 pH에서 효과적으로 흡착하였다. Freundlish isotherm 모델이 Langmuir 모델보다 Fe-Mn-Si oxide의 흡착에 더 적합했다. 이온성 용액은 인이 흡착되는 과정에서 음이온들과 경쟁관계로 흡착능이 감소되었다. 비록 음이온과 humic물질들로부터 흡착에 영향을 받지만 Fe-Mn-Si oxide는 Fe-Mn oxide보다 흡착능이 크게 나타났다.

소규모 정수처리시설 내 비소제거를 위한 산화철 담체 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristic of Iron Oxide Carrier for the Removal of Arsenic in Small Water Treatment Plant)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristic of the iron oxide carrier for removing arsenic contained in the groundwater. 4 types of iron oxide carrier used in the study is iron oxide coated sand carrier (IOCSC), iron oxide coated zeolite carrier (IOCZC), iron oxide plasticity carrier (IOPC) and platinum iron oxide plasticity carrier (PIOPC). The results of this study, IOPC is showed high arsenic adsorption strength and the maximum amount of adsorption than the IOCC. Based on the results of the arsenic adsorption characteristic, by using IOCC was conducted to column test. As a result, PIOPC is showed a high arsenic adsorption amount than IOPC, it was found that the time required to reach the breakthrough point is also extended. Therefore it is determined that stably compliance with water quality standards enhanced drinking water when using the PIOPC.

Simple and Efficient Synthesis of Iron Oxide-Coated Silica Gel Adsorbents for Arsenic Removal: Adsorption Isotherms and Kinetic Study

  • Iron oxide (ferrihydrite, hematite, and magnetite) coated silica gels were prepared using a low-cost, easily-scalable and straightforward method as the adsorbent material for arsenic removal application. Adsorption of the anionic form of arsenic oxyacids, arsenite ($AsO^{2-}$) and arsenate ($AsO{_4}^{3-}$), onto hematite coated silica gel was fitted against non-linear 3-parameter-model Sips isotherm and 2-parameter-model Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption kinetics of arsenic could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and value of adsorption energy derived from non-linear Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm suggests chemical adsorption. Although arsenic adsorption process was not affected by the presence of sulfate, chloride, and nitrate anions, as expected, bicarbonate and silicate gave moderate negative effects while the presence of phosphate anions significantly inhibited adsorption process of both arsenite and arsenate. When the actual efficiency to remove arsenic was tested against 1 L of artificial arsenic-contaminated groundwater (0.6 mg/L) in the presence competing anions, the reasonable amount (20 g) of hematite coated silica gel could reduce arsenic concentration to below the WHO permissible safety limit of drinking water of $10{\mu}g/L$ without adjusting pH and temperature, which would be highly advantageous for practical field application.
