A Study of HC Reduction with Hydrocarbon Adsorber Systems

  • Hydrocarbon adsorber is considered as a promising technology to reduce cold start HCs in automotive exhaust gas. In this study, three in-line adsorber systems were tried to reduce the cold start emission. To check the basic characteristics of adsorber converters, surface areas, TPD and TP A were examined after a hydrothermal aging. Also idle engine bench was used to find the adsorption and desorption capabilities of the adsorber systems at cold start. Finally a practicability of the adsorber systems for the LEV achievement was checked with FTP test on a 2.0 D MIT vehicle. The results of this study indicate that hydrocarbon adsorber system is one of the promising passive technologies to meet the ULEV regulation.

활성탄 흡착지의 운영시 응집 방법에 따른 경제성 평가 (Economical Evaluation Based on Method of Coagulation with GAC Adsorber Operation)

  • Applying enhanced coagulation is not uncommon not only to improve water quality but also to obtain economical advantages in water treatment. In this study, the economical evaluation was investigated with considering dosage of coagulant, produced sludges and usage of activated carbon with two different water sources. To simulate the granular activated carbon(GAC) adsorber mini-column test was adapted. Even if there were some variation according to the source waters, the life time of GAC was extended 60 to 110days with adding 2.5 to 3 times of coagulant in enhanced coagulation. With assumption of changing GAC adsorber at 50% of breakthrough the total treatment cost can be reduced to range from 25% to 44% with adapting the enhanced coagulation. The obtained value can not be generalized because the value can be varied by water quality and cost of the GAC or coagulant. However, the evaluation can be basis starting point to find optimum operation methods for the drinking water treatment which has plan to adapt GAC adsorber.

A Study on the Reduction of Cold Start Hydrocarbon from Gasoline Engines Using Hydrocarbon Adsorbers

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and to reduce cold start hydrocarbons in gasoline engines. An HC adsorber was, used and it coated was by Pd/Rh catalyst with zeolite on a honeycomb monolith. The HCs were efficiently trapped at temperatures below $100^{\circ}C by physical adsorption. After adsorption, they were reduced gradually by the catalytic oxidation of Pd/Rh catalysts as the adsorber temperature increased above $100^{\circ}C. Increasing amounts of methane, ethylene and n-butane were emitted as the fuel-air mixture became richer and the engine speed decreased. As the temperature of adsorber increased, high-number carbons into low-number carbons. Thus, the C4 concentration decreased significantly during the first 30 seconds, and the C2 concentration increased continuously.

A simple and rapid approach to modeling chromium breakthrough in fixed bed adsorber

  • A simple mathematical model for predicting fixed bed adsorption dynamics is described. The model is characterized by a linear adsorption isotherm and a linear driving force expression for mass transfer. Its analytic solution can be approximated with an algebraic equation in closed form which is easily evaluated by spreadsheet computation. To demonstrate one application of the fixed bed model, a previously published adsorption system is used as a case study in this work. The adsorption system examined here describes chromium breakthrough in a fixed bed adsorber packed with imidazole functionalized adsorbent particles and is characterized by a nonlinear adsorption isotherm. However, the equilibrium behavior of the fixed bed adsorber is in essence governed by a linear adsorption isotherm due to the use of a low influent chromium concentration. It is shown that chromium breakthrough is predicted reasonably well by the fixed bed model. The model's parameters can be easily extracted from independent batch experiments. The proposed modeling approach is very simple and rapid, and only Excel is used for computation.

소독부산물 제어를 위한 실공정 F/A 운영에 관한 고찰 (Evaluation of Filter-Adsorber(F/A) Process for Removal of Disinfection By-products(DBPs))

  • 입상활성탄 공정은 수처리에서 널리 사용되고 있으며, S와 B정수장은 기존의 급속여과지의 여재를 활성탄으로 교체하여 F/A 공정으로 운영하고 있다. 소독부산물의 제어를 위해 F/A가 도입된 금강수계 S정수장과 낙동강 수계 B정수장의 운영결과를 토대로 용존유기물질(DOC)과 소독부산물(DBPs) 등의 효율평가와 F/A공정 운영인자 등에 대하여 검토하였다. 두 정수장 원수의 용존유기물질 특성은 친수성과 소수성이 유사한 범위를 보이고 있으며, F/A공정에서 운영 초기 흡착능에 의한 빠른 파과특성을 나타내었다. F/A에서 소독부산물의 제거특성은 운영초기에 THM과 HAA 모두 제거효율이 우수하였으나, 운영기간이 경과되면서 THM제거율은 급격히 감소하였으며, HAA의 제거율은 동절기 저수온 시기를 제외하고는 생물학적 제거기작에 의해 높은 제거효율을 나타냈다. F/A공정은 활성탄흡착지(Post GAC) 공정과 비교하여 높은 유기물 부하, 잔류염소, 응집제 또는 응집보조제, 망간, 빈번한 역세척 등의 여러 가지 이유로 인해 여재 물성치 및 흡착능의 감소가 빠르게 나타났다. F/A공정이 실공정으로 도입되어 1년 이상 운영되어진 결과를 보면 활성탄 여재의 물성치 및 흡착능의 빠른 감소 경향이 있지만, 소독부산물 중 $HAA_5$항목이 문제시되는 정수장의 경우 기타여과지로 인증을 받은 F/A공정은 향후 점점 더 강화되는 수질기준의 만족을 위한 대안공정의 하나로서 적용이 가능하리라 판단된다.

고도정수처리용 Filter/Adsorber Granular Activated Carbon 특성 평가: 마모지수, floater, water-soluble ash 및 흡착특성 평가 (Evaluation on Filter/Adsorber Granular Activated Carbon using in Advanced Drinking Water Treatment: Abrasion number, Floater, Water-soluble ash, and Adsorption characteristics)

  • The characteristics of filter/adsorber granular activated carbon (F/A GAC) were investigated by measuring various parameters, which include surface area, pore volume, abrasion number, floater, and water-soluble ash. The correlation between parameters was also evaluated. Moreover, rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) was conducted for adsorption characteristics. Thirteen F/A GAC were tested, and the average values of abrasion number and water-soluble ash were 88.9 and 0.15%, respectively. F/A GAC with the larger external surface area and greater mesopore volume had the lower abrasion number, which indicated that it was worn out relatively easily. Water-soluble ash of coconut-based GAC (about 2.6%) was greater than that of coal-based GAC (less than 1%), and the pH of solution was increased with GAC, which had the higher water-soluble ash. On the other hand, floater of thirteen F/A GAC was divided as two groups, which one group had relatively higher floater (2.7~3.5%) and the other group had lower floater (approximately 0.5%). The results of RSSCT indicated that coconut-based GAC (i.e. relatively higher water-soluble ash) had less adsorption capacity. Moreover, adsorption capacity of coal-based GAC with larger surface area and greater mesopore volume was superior to others.

역층상 점증형 흡착탑에서의 흡착특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Reverse Stratified Tapered Adsorber)

  • 활성탄 흡착법은 유해 유기화합물질을 처리하기 위한 최적기법이다. 강화되어 가는 각종 환경 기준을 만족시키고, 활성탄처리 비용절감을 위하여 RSTA의 최적화를 연구하였다. 실린더형 흡착탑과 RSTA의 비교실험에서는 동일 조건하에서 RSTA의 파과시간이 증가하였다. RSTA의 최적화를 위한 실험에서 최척 선속도는 19.10cm/min였으며, 최적각은 압력강하 실험과 최적 각도 결정 실험을 통해서 RSTA($3.0^{\circ}$)인 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 활성탄 주입량과 충전층수가 많을수록 흡착효율은 증가하였다.

소형 흡착식 냉동기에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Investigation on Small-scale Sorption Refrigerator)

  • This paper describes an experimental study on small-scale sorption refrigerator. Silica gel (type A) as an adsorbent, HFC-l34a as a refrigerant were selected for a sorption refrigerator The focus of the design was to reduce the cycle time of the sorption refrigerator. Through the experiment, pressure and temperature variations in the adsorber were measured and the performance of refrigerator was predicted. In this paper, the small-scale sorption refrigerator operates with the cycle time of 4805. Its predicted cooling capacity is 25 W at -15$^{\circ}C$ and COP is 0.23.

  • Exhaust emissions from vehicles are the main source of air pollution. Many researchers are trying to find the way of reducing vehicle emissions, especially in the cold transient period of the FTP-75 test. In this study, UEGI (Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition) technology, warming up the close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture using two glow plugs installed in the upstream of the catalyst, was developed. It was applied to an exhaust system with a hydrocarbon adsorber to ensure an effective reduction of HC emission during the cold start period. Results showed that the CCC reaches the light-off temperature (LOT) in a shorter time compared with the baseline exhaust system, and HC and CO emissions are reduced significantly during the cold start.
