A Study on the Formative Character of the Korean Shaman′s Costume - Focusing on the Hong-Sung Area, Choong-Nam - (한국 무속복식의 조형성 고찰 -충남 홍성지역을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper aims at analysing the formative character of the Korean Shaman's Costume in the area of Hong -Sung, Choong -Nam. Korean shamanism has been the core of the traditional folk religions. so that it has had a great effect upon the formation of Korean's mind and custom. And its magical power remains unabated even today. Modern shamanism in the Hong-Sung area has been changed under the influence of the shamanism in the Seoul-Koungki area. Therefore modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area is similar to shaman's costume in the Seoul-Koungki area. Modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area has only 5 or 6 kinds. These consist of Pulsajangsam, Chulik, Kugunbok, Mongduri and Wonsam. But there are some differences between modern shaman's costume and traditional costume in the formative character, Modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area has became simpler in the formative character and more gorgeous in color or adornment than that of the traditional costume.

Communal Coherence, Spirituality and Clothing Symbolism of the Chief Priest in the Ga Traditional Governance

  • Investigations on the symbolic role, spiritual health benefits and efficacy of the clothing items of the Ga wolomo (chief priest) have received little attention. Highlighting the relevance of these clothes, this paper focuses on the chief priest's dress code for his appointment, confinement, ordination, ceremonial and daily life activities. Data were collected through content analysis, participant observation and interviews with people from selected Ga communities, such as La, Teshie and Ga Mashie. The findings revealed that the selection of the chief priest is confirmed with a special clothing item. His traditional clothes and adornment also have meanings, importance and symbolic interpretations; explained in their uses, colour and style. As the spiritual head, the role of the chief priest's costume is very distinguished and symbolic in executing his duties; protecting, strengthening faith, confidence and assurance during spiritual healing, and when solving pertinent problems in the community. The paper concludes by recommending further research and documentation on other aspects of the Ga clothing culture, such as hand items and hair styles from the pre-colonial period to the present.

  • The Scythians had a veritable passion for adornment, delighting in decorating themselves no less than their horses and belongings. Their love of jewellery was expressed at every turn. The most magnificent pieces naturally come from the royal tombs. In the area of the neck and chest the Scythian had a massive gold Torques, a symbol of power, made of gold, turquoise, cornelian coral and even amber. The entire surface of the torque, like that of many of the other artefacts, is decorated with depictions of animals. Scythian Torques are worn with the decorative terminals to the front. It was put a Torque on, grasped both terminals and placed the opening at the back of the neck. It is possible the Torque signified its wearer's religious leadership responsibilities. Scythian Torques were divided into several types according to the shape, Torque with Terminal style, Spiral style, Layers style, Crown style, Crescent-shaped pectoral style.

On Rupcumkyon : Monasteries with Sculptures at Sale, Salin, Legaing and Saku in Magway Region, Myanmar

  • There are many Rupcumkyon: - Monasteries with sculptures in Magway Region. But some were ruined and some are preserved and maintained still today. Most of the monasteries are built in Radanapon Period. But some are built in early Colonial Period. Nobilities and wealthy persons donated these monasteries to their learned Sayadaws. The architect used a lot of log in construction. Some monasteries have six stairways but other has four stairways. At these monasteries, sculptures were put on blusters. These were illustrations of extract from 547 Jataka stories and Dhammapada. Illustrations admonish the people not to do excessive craving and passion. These sculptures depict the art of sculpture, costume and adornment, and socio-economy of that Period under survey. This paper is to reveal and to explore the significant features in building monasteries and to compare each of the monasteries with sculptures at Sale, Salin, Legaing and Sagu in Magway Region.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the unique image characteristics of Korea and identify the Korea culture by comparing the image characteristics of traditional palaces of Korea, China and Japan. This study identifies the unique image characteristics of Korea through a comparative analysis the image of three nations. Literature research, free association measurement, survey were conducted to select study objects and descriptive words. 5 outside-pictures and 2 inside-pictures of the Changduckung, the Forbidden City, the Nijo castle representing each country's traditional palaces were chosen as study objects. A questionnaire was made with 47 descriptive words and 5-scale measurement. The results of analysis are as follows. The representative words to express the image characteristics of Korea, China and Japan traditional palaces are adornment, stability, openness, lines, unfamiliarity, feminine. This study researched the common and different factors between the image characteristics in traditional palaces of Korea, China and Japan. The common image is the image of lines. The distinctive characteristics of Korea are stability, curved lines and femininity. The characteristics of China are adornment and straight lines. And, the characteristics of Japan are simplicity, unfamiliarity, and openness. Based on the research, it was found out that stability and curved lines are the main characteristics of Korea. This study researches the characteristics of images of Korea, China and Japan. This study shows the common and different factors of image characteristics of in the neighboring three nations of East Asia. Due to the geographical and cultural effect over a long time, the Korea was evaluated as the middle cultural between China and Japan. However, this study found unique characteristics of Korea's image.

  • In the world, most of the metal technologists were as called as adornment artists than other field of industrial arts strongly industrial characters functional materials and manufacturing technology many used in the present age. In the study, one of adornments researched and material character analyzed about Art Clay Silver. The shrinkage rate of shape was about 0.24%. A shrinking phenomenon drying time thought of evaporation of water linking bonding agents and powders. After calcination of Art Clay Silver, the EDX used that just Ag 100% analyzed a result from the surface assay in the room temperature. A binder with powder in the room temperature considered to disappear, because it was been fume and smoke at high calcined temperature. A study showed when handicrafted necklaces make by these characteristic as using in difficult and delicated operations rather than naturally and beautifully expressive products.

  • In the turn of the century, fashion designers have not just drawn upon one or two subcultural styles but have extracted elements from many subcultures to use in a single collection. In true postmodern style these are freely combined with historical, cross-cultural and futuristic influences to create new fashions. The process could be explained by bubble-up phenomenon, retroism. pastiche and pursuit of pleasure. In the course of illustrating subcultural styles transformed into mainstream fashion, the case of Punk was studied as a turning point of modernist and postmodern period which have been introduced by high fashion designers since the birth in 1976. The following cases have continued to appear entering upon the third millennium and the aesthetic value of those can be summarized as ambiguity, eclecticism, and deconstruction. In other words. the energy and authenticity of Punk has been considered to be desirable in high fashion, however designers focus on clothing and adornment rather than ideology and lifestyle. The aesthetic property of subcultural style defeats the established notion of standardized fashion and stimulates new consciousness. which allows a room to be diversified and subdivided.

A study of the determinants according to Avatar using motive (아바타 꾸미기 동기유형과 관련 변수에 관한 연구 -대구.경북지역 대학생을 중심으로-)

  • The purposes of this study were to find the actual condition about decoration of avatar systematically, classify each motive, considering the variety of the motive for avatar, and to analyse the important variables that they have an effect on Avatar using motive. The results were as follows; First, in result executing the factor analysis about the features of Avatar using motive, it revealed the factors like 'Pleasure-oriented', 'Other-oriented', 'Superiority-oriented' and "Individual expressive-oriented" motive. Second, the users on the basis of the Avatar using motive were divided into four groups respectively, that is 'Multipurpose purchasing group', 'Superiority group', 'Individual expressive group' and 'Passive-purpose group'. The most numbers of the respondent were belong to 'Multipurpose chasing group (N=179). On the other hands, the least numbers of the respondent were belong to 'Individual expressive group (N=93). Third, it was conducted by the crossing analysis and ANOVA about the consumer's group. And the result showed the significant difference in Avatar adornment experience, consuming expense, possession item's number, gender, age, friend, mass media and self esteem.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the concept and characteristics of 'grotesque,' examine the aesthetic characteristics of grotesque reflected in arts and dress, and modern fashion. The findings are as follows: 1) Grotesque indicates unnatural, unpleasant, and exaggerated that it upsets or shocks person. The characteristics of grotesque include terror, abnormality, unreality, amusement, disgust. 2) The grotesque art represented terror, abnormality, unreality, amusement, disgust by disordered form, nonnatural things, evil world, unorthodox methods, unrealistic image, strange dreamland. 3) The grotesque dress represented terror, abnormality, unreality, amusement, disgust by exaggerated silhouette, exaggerated adornment, excessive decoration, incroyables, using exaggerated silhouette, crinoline silhouette, bustle silhouette, surrealist style, extraordinary materials, glam rock style, unique silhouette, cyber look. 3) Terror was implied in the punk look suits of Junya Watanabe, and exaggerated outers of Viktor & Rolf. Abnormality was shown in the atypical suit of John Galliano, Junya Watanabe's dress decorated with the extreme ruff, Thom Browne's suit of abnormal proportion. Unreality was reflected in the architectural dress of Gareth Pugh, Mermaid dress of Giles, the surreal suit of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Amusement was represented in the amusing suit of Gareth Pugh, John Galliano's dress of sexual perversion. Disgust was reflected in the decadent dress of Thierry Mugler, Undercove's suit, and the ensemble of shocking details.

A Study on Symbolic Meanings and Aesthetic Senses of Henna Design (헤나디자인의 미적 특성과 상징적 의미 연구)

  • The earliest of the Cultural forms have utilized different methods of artistic expression and aesthetic senses such as the Tattoo that symbolized the adornment of the human body. when viewing from the perspective of postmodern art and design, these cultural forms were redefined as a regression and intertextuality, a modern interpretation of Henna that had a subversive significance. Specifically, Henna design quickly emerged as a new style in fashion art which represented a postmodern phenomenon. It was introduced as a fashion style in korea about 10years ago. since then, the henna fashion trends is growing rapidly in the domestic market. However, It is growing without our unique identity due to indiscriminate and excessive industrialization. This study of Henna design, (similar to the art of Tattooing) sees from a cultural and regional perspective of orgin. This study interprets henna as a fashion style and analyzes symbolic meaning and aesthetic senses today with a clear definition of henna Design. from now on It's purpose is to establish the Korean Henna culture and the possibility of it being the fashion style that contains a unique atmosphere.
