  • Adolescents from stepfamilies have been considered as at-risk group of mental and behavioral problems. This study aims to determine whether there is a group difference of emotional or behavior disturbance between young people in step and non-stepfamilies and whether risk factors linked to emotional and behavior symptoms of young people in stepfamilies are different from those of girls in non-stepfamilies. The study used 'the Mental Health of Children and Young People in Great Britain, 2004 (MHCYP 2004)'. In the MHCYP 2004, the Rutter Problem Behavior Questionnaire, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were administered to parents, teachers, and children drawn from young people aged 5-17 living in private households in England, Scotland (including the Highlands and Islands) and Wales. The total of 2,471 samples of aged 13 through 17 from them were selected for this study. The selected data was analyzed using SPSS. The findings showed group differences in emotional and behavior symptoms between young people in step and non-stepfamilies: Young people from stepfamilies were more emotional and have behavioral disturbances than those from nonstepfamilies. The result also confirmed the different risk factors associated with emotional behavior problems. The study supports that professionals need to develop effective treatment and preventive approaches designed for young people in stepfamilies who may have different risk factors different from those in non-stepfamilies.

  • Purpose: To examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and differentiate factors associated with them in urban and rural areas by applying the Ecological Models of Health Behavior. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional design and convenience sample of 460 female adolescents. The instruments included the Adolescent Mental-Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire (AMPQ-II) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: Depressive symptoms were confirmed in 15.7% of urban adolescents and 22.9% of rural adolescents (p<.05). In the urban group, perception of health and stress associated with school performance were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. In the rural group, academic/internet related problems and rule violations were significantly associated with depressive symptoms (p<.05). General life happiness, worry/anxiety, and mood/suicidal ideation were common factors in both urban and rural areas (p<.05). Conclusion: Multiple factors were associated with depressive symptoms, and those significant factors differed between urban and rural female youths. Accordingly, tailored approaches are required considering urban and rural differences. The approaches should include intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational levels of interventions.

The collected data were processed using the SPSS-X computer program and statistically analyzed by the Chi-square method and. percentage. Results of the study were as follows: Among the 370 adolescents, 32.4% of students experienced cigarette smoking in their life, adolescents who experienced alcohol drinking were 46.8%, 0.5% of the students ever used marihuana; cocaine 0.3%, stimulant 3.2%, hallucinogen and inhalants 0.5%, tranquilizer 1.4%, analgesics 31:6%, antitussives 6.5%, antihistamines 1.9%. And all students never experienced the amphetamines and narcotics. The rates of drug use except stimulant and antitussive were higher in the male than in the female students. For the analysis of personal identifying datum, the rates of experienced smokers increased among groups of buddhist and the rates of experienced alconoi drinking increased among groups of no religion. Drug abuser increased among the group lower socio-economic status student, the adolescents whose parents have traditional education point of view. And it was also higher in those who were living only one than in those who were living together. Most students tended to use drugs after 17 or 18 years old. Drug users were more inclined to commit other problem behaviors when compared non-drug users. In the conclusion of the above results, it will be necessary to investigate the drug problem of adolescent. Drug abuse of students must be seen in an environmental context including family, school, peer group and society and not solely as the characteristics of an individual adolescent. And their parents and teachers must be on the alert for the behavior changes of their children such as changes of school performance, neglecting homework, tardiness or truancy from school, runaway from home, and mingled with bad companions, etc. We must recognize that drug abuse is frequently symptomatic of problems in the adolescent's environment.

Methods:We used the data from the web-based survey of the National Korean Youth Risk Behavior of Korean Center for Disease Control in 2016. The study subjects were 65,528 adolescents from middle- and high schools. Data were analyzed by SPSS Ver. 19.0. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the factors related to gingival symptoms. Results: We observed 1.52 of odds ratio (OR) for gingival symptoms for those who smoked only without drinking in middle schools. In addition, we had ORs of 1.29 or 1.69 for those who drank only without smoking, or who smoked and drank in the middle schools, respectively, compared to nonsmoking nondrinkers. Risk of gingival symptoms for those who drank only or who smoked and drank in high schools were 1.18 or 1.17 times higher than nonsmoking nondrinkers. Conclusions: Smoking and drinking status among the adolescents are the risk factors to develop gingival symptoms. The problem of smoking and drinking in the adolescents should be considered when establishing the policies and institutions to improve oral health targeting the adolescents.
