  • High sodium dietary habits may cause various diseases, thereby threatening the public health. Various efforts have been made to control high sodium use in diets, but few studies have been conducted on health communication efforts to modify such habits. This study looks for suggestions for diet improvement education by examining whether or not high sodium dietary habits can be predicted by a consumer's perception on the threat and controllability of high sodium diets. In this study, a questionnaire was developed to measure the severity, vulnerability, efficiency, efficacy, and behavioral tendencies of the consumer, which were subscales of the protective motivation theory. The questionnaire was given to university students and their families in Chungnam Province. The results of a statistical analysis were as follows: First, more young people preferred high-sodium diets than older people. Second, the correlation analysis showed that older people knew that they were vulnerable to the negative effects of high sodium diets, but they would not change their dietary habits until they were confident that they could control the high-sodium diet. Third, the structural model analysis showed that the higher the coping perception was, the lower was the tendency to consume a high-sodium diet. These results suggest that in the effort to reduce high-sodium diets, it is more effective to provide viable information and improve efficacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and high intensity exercise on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in adolescents. This is a secondary data analysis study using 15th Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. Data analysis was performed by chi-square and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 22.0. As a result, there were differences in allergic diseases, high-intensity exercise, smoking experience, and drinking experience in both depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. After adjusting for smoking experience and alcohol experience, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis were influencing factor for depression symptoms(OR:1.16, 95% CI:1.07-1.26; OR:1.16, 95% CI:1.11-1.21; OR:1.17, 95% CI:1.11-1.23) and for suicidal ideation(OR:1.32, 95% CI:1.20-1.47; OR:1.22, 95% CI:1.15-1.29; OR:1.21, 95% CI:1.14-1.29). However, high intensity exercise had decreased depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation(OR:0.90, 95% CI:0.86-0.94; OR:0.85, 95% CI:0.80-0.90). As a result of this study, it was found that allergic diseases and high-intensity exercise had a great effect on mental health in adolescents, and we may use it as basic data for prevention and research related to the mental health of adolescent.

  • Objectives: Handwashing is one of the most effective methods to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. This study assessed the related factors and reasons for not practicing handwashing at school among adolescents. Methods: We analyzed data collected from 57,303 adolescents who participated in the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2019. Results: The proportions of not washing hands "before meals at school" and "after using the toilet at school" were 15.9% and 4.4%, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio for not washing hands before meals at school was significantly higher in girls (Odds Ratio [OR]=1.52, 95% Confidence Intervals [CI]=1.42-1.63), metropolitan city (OR=1.32, 95% CI=1.11-1.56), city (OR=1.29, 95% CI=1.08-1.54), higher grade, higher academic performance, lower economic status, not handwashing at home (OR=14.36, 95% CI=13.37-15.42), and without annual personal hygiene education (OR=1.41, 95% CI=1.33-1.49). Reasons for not washing hands at school among adolescents who do not wash their hands before meals at school included 'it is bothersome (52.3%)', 'there is no soap or hand sanitizer (13.8%)', and 'I do not feel the need (9.5%)'. Conclusions: Improving handwashing before meals at school among adolescents requires raising awareness of the importance of handwashing before meals and establishing a suitable environment and handwashing-encouraging culture.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the standardization of daily average smartphone use time among adolescents. The data were analyzed using the data from Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey of 2017, and the total number of students analyzed was 54,603. Frequency analysis, independent t test, Pearson correlation analysis, and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. As a result, the correlation coefficient between smartphone use time, age, and grade was very low (r =.025~.039). There was no significant difference in the usage of smartphone between middle and high school students(p>.05). Time of smartphone use was significantly higher in middle school students as the grade increased(p<.05). In high school students, second-year students had significantly more smartphone usage than first and third grade students(p<.05). The researchers described 54603 adolescents' average(minute) daily smartphone usage about sex(male, female), period of use(weekday, weekend), school(middle school, high school), and grade(first, second, third) as a 7th quartile. We suggest that the standard value of smartphone use time can be used as a basis for the physical and mental health management in adolescents. It is necessary to present a standard value that can prove the future overuse of smartphone.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown maternal betaine supplementation alleviates fetal-derived hepatic steatosis. Therefore, this study examined the anti-inflammatory effect of maternal betaine intake in offspring mice and its mechanism. MATERIALS/METHODS: Female C57BL/6J mice and their offspring were randomly divided into 3 groups according to the treatment received during gestation and lactation: control diet (CD), fatty liver disease (FLD), and fatty liver disease + 1% betaine (FLD-BET). The FLD group was given a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (HFD + STZ), and the FLD-BET group was treated with HFD + STZ + 1% betaine. After weaning, the offspring mice were given a normal diet for 5 weeks and then dissected to measure the relevant indexes. RESULTS: Compared to the CD group, the offspring mice in the FLD group revealed obvious hepatic steatosis and increased serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α; maternal betaine supplementation reversed these changes. The hepatic mRNA expression levels of IL-6, IL-18, and Caspase-1 were significantly higher in the FLD group than in the CD group. Maternal betaine supplementation reduced the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing C-terminal caspase recruitment domain (ASC). Maternal betaine supplementation also reversed the increasing protein expressions of nitric oxide dioxygenase-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), ASC, Caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 in offspring mice exposed to HFD + STZ. Maternal betaine supplementation decreased the homocysteine (Hcy) and s-adenosine homocysteine (SAH) levels significantly in the livers. Furthermore, the hepatic Hcy concentrations showed significant inverse relationships with the mRNA expression of TNF-α, NLRP3, ASC, and IL-18. The hepatic SAH concentration was inversely associated with the IL-1β mRNA expression. CONCLUSIONS: The lipotropic and anti-inflammatory effect of maternal betaine supplementation may be associated with the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome in the livers of the offspring mice.

  • Purpose: To date, there is no region-specific guideline for pediatric endoscopy training. This study aimed to illustrate the current status of pediatric endoscopy training in Asia-Pacific region and identify opportunities for improvement. Methods: A cross-sectional survey, using a standardized electronic questionnaire, was conducted among medical schools in the Asia-Pacific region in January 2024. Results: A total of 57 medical centers in 12 countries offering formal Pediatric Gastroenterology training programs participated in this regional survey. More than 75% of the centers had an average case load of <10 cases per week for both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies. Only 36% of the study programs employed competency-based outcomes for program development, whereas nearly half (48%) used volume-based curricula. Foreign body retrieval, polypectomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, and esophageal variceal hemostasis, that is, sclerotherapy or band ligation (endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy and endoscopic variceal ligation), comprised the top four priorities that the trainees should acquire in the autonomous stage (unconscious) of competence. Regarding the learning environment, only 31.5% provided formal hands-on workshops/simulation training. The direct observation of procedural skills was the most commonly used assessment method. The application of a quality assurance (QA) system in both educational and patient care (Pediatric Endoscopy Quality Improvement Network) aspects was present in only 28% and 17% of the centers, respectively. Conclusion: Compared with Western academic societies, the limited availability of cases remains a major concern. To close this gap, simulation and adult endoscopy training are essential. The implementation of reliable and valid assessment tools and QA systems can lead to significant development in future programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relevance of mental health and nutritional intake according to the sleep duration of Korean adolescents. This study was based on data from the 2007-2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHNES), including 5,489 total subjects (2,795 middle school students, 2,694 high school students). The association between sleep duration and mental health was analyzed using a logistic regression analysis, and the link between sleep duration and nutritional intake was analyzed via a generalized linear model. An analysis of sleep duration showed that middle school students had a higher average sleep duration than high school students (P<0.0001). An analysis of the relationship between sleep duration and mental health showed that middle school students had lower rates of stress perception (P<0.0001) and suicidal ideation (P=0.0005) as their sleep duration increased. High school students had 53% less suicidal ideation in the group getting 6-7 hours compared to the group getting less than 6 hours, and 37% less suicidal ideation than the group getting 7-8 hours. The link between sleep duration and stress perception was statistically significant among both middle and high school students (P for interaction=0.02). An analysis of the daily intake of major nutrients according to sleep hours found high intake of vitamin C in groups where high school students slept more than nine hours (P=0.003). The state of nutritional intake according to higher sleep duration showed statistically significant differences between higher intake of phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C in Nutrient Adequacy Ratio for high school students. In conclusion, adolescents' sleep duration is associated with stress perception, suicidal ideation and nutritional intake. Therefore, this study emphasizes the mental importance of adolescent sleep and can be used as a basis for nutrition education.

  • The decrease of bone mineral density gives rise to the outbreak of osteopenia and makes the possibility of a bone fracture. It makes health problems in society. It's very important to prevent osteopenia in advance. Also it's critical to prevent and take care of it in adolescent because it's the most developing period comparing to middle ages because that bone mineral density decreases. There are genetic, physical and enviromental factors that affect bone mineral density. Recently, a lifestyle and eating habits are also changing as the society atmosphere is gradually doing. This study have shown that 134 women and 75 men was chosen and responded to the survey of measuring bone mineral density and investigating a lifestyle. The measure of bone mineral density is to use Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) and check femoral neck and lumbar spine. Also questionaries was required to pre-made survey about their lifestyles. Analysis of data was done with SPSS program. Multiple regression analysis was used for the relation of bone mineral density, the heigths and BMI. The sample of Groups are checked for drinking, smoking or excercising about differences by t-test. The results of the experiments were; first, there is statistically significant differences in the comparisons between BMD and BMD. But there isn't any special correlation between drinking, smoking and BMD. Secondly, bone mineral density becomes low related to an intake of caffeine. Particularly, this is statically significant on women. Also there is statically significant correlation between femoral neck and quantity of motion for both men and women. Third, there is significant relation between eating habits and bone mineral density on women's lumbar spine. However, there is no significant relation between men's lumbar spine and women's one. Therefore, to prevent osteopenia, it's good to abstain from intaking caffeine within an hour after a meal. In addition, it's helpful to walk or run regularly and have a balanced meal.
