유럽인 자료로 산출된 조현병 다유전자 위험도 점수의 한국인 조현병 환자를 대상으로 한 적용 (Comparison of Polygenic Risk for Schizophrenia between European and Korean Populations)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to explore whether common genetic variants that confer the risk of schizophrenia have similar effects between Korean and European ancestries using the polygenic risk score (PRS) analysis. Methods: Study subjects included 713 Korean patients with schizophrenia and 497 healthy controls. The Korea Biobank array was used for genotyping. Summary statistics of the most recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the European population were used as baseline data to calculate PRS. Logistic regression was conducted to determine the association between calculated PRS of European patients with schizophrenia and clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia in the Korean population. Results: Schizophrenia PRS was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia than in healthy controls. The PRS at the p-value threshold of 0.5 best explained the variance of schizophrenia (R2=0.028, p=4.4×10-6). The association was significant after adjusting for age and sex (odds ratio=1.34, 95% confidence interval=1.19-1.51, p=1.1×10-6). The pattern of the association remained similar across different p-value thresholds (0.01-1). Conclusion: Schizophrenia PRS calculated using the European GWAS data showed a significant association with the clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia in the Korean population. Results suggest overlapping genetic risk variants between the two populations.

참죽 분말을 첨가한 전병의 항산화 활성 및 품질특성 (Antioxidant Activity and Quality Characteristics of Jeonbyeong added Cedrela sinensis Powder)

  • 참죽나물은 맛과 향 및 붉은 색이 조화를 이루는 귀한 산채 중의 하나로 우리나라와 중국에서만 이른 봄에 참죽나무 순을 데쳐서 나물로 먹었던 전통식품 중의 하나이다(Kim et al. 2012). 본 연구는 전통 산채인 참죽나무 잎을 분말화한 후 첨가량을 달리하여 전병반죽에 첨가하여 total phenolic content, DPPH free radical 소거활성을 측정하였으며 참죽 전병의 품질특성을 비교분석하기 위해 반죽의 수분 및 pH, 전병의 비중, 수분, 색도, 경도, 관능평가를 실시하였다. 이를 통해 참죽나무 잎의 저장성과 가공방법을 연구하고 전병에 첨가하여 기호 및 영양학적 가치를 높이고자 하였다. 참죽 전병의 total phenolic content는 참죽 분말 12%를 첨가한 첨가군이 $161.1{\pm}0.09$ mg GAE/100 g로 가장 높았다. DPPH free radical 소거활성은 $1000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ 수준에서 12% 첨가군이 가장 높은 활성을 보였다. 반면 반죽의 pH와 수분함량은 참죽 분말이 증가함에 따라 감소하였으며, 전병의 수분함량 또한 감소하였다. 전병의 색도는 L값과 b값은 참죽 분말 첨가량이 증가할수록 낮아지고, a값은 높아지는 유의적인 차이를 나타냈으며, 경도는 시료 첨가에 따라 다소 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 관능검사에서는 9% 첨가군이 모든 항목에서 가장 높은 선호도를 보였다. 이러한 결과들로 미루어 보아 참죽 분말은 뛰어난 항산화능을 보이고 있으며 가공식품의 기능성 재료로 충분한 가치가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

한국인 백내장환자의 항산화 체계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Antioxidant System in Cataract Patients)

  • Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and are characterized by increased opacity of the lens that significantly diminishes visual acuity. It has been suggested that increased risk of lens opacities are associated with age, exposure to sunlight, diabetes, smoking, and poor nutrition. Antioxidant nutrients have born demonstrated to protect the lens membrane and protein against damage due to oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant system in the blood of cataract patients. The status of the blood antioxidant system was evaluated based on the levels of antioxidant vitamins and minerals as well as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and malondialdehyde (M7A) activity in 34 patients with cataracts (17 male and 17 female) and 45 control subjects (20 male and 25 female). After adjusting for age, the results showed significantly lower levels of antioxidant vitamins such as lycopene (M : p < 0.05, F: p < 0.01), zeaxanthin (F: p < 0.01), ${\gamma}$-tocopherol (F: p < 0.01) and ascorbic arid (M: p < 0.05) in the cataract patients than in the control subjects. In contrast, the concentration of cryptoxanthin (F : p < 0.07) showed a significantly higher value in the cataract patients. The serum level of the antioxidant mineral Zn (M : p < 0.01) was found to be significantly lower in the cataract patients while the ratio of cu/zn appeared significantly higher (M : p < 0.05). Significantly higher (M : p < 0.01, F: p < 0.05) concentrations of MDA in serum was found in the cataract patients as compared to the control subjects. GSH-Px activity was significantly lower (F: p < 0.05) in 71e cataract patients. In conclusion, the antioxidant system may play an important roll in cataract creation. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying these findings and to establish preventive measures with an emphasis on antioxidant nutrition for cataract patients.

Brassiere의 적합성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Wear Fitness of Brassiere)

  • The purpose of this study is to find fitness of brassiere by means of body measuring value, its variation volume, the evaluation of perceptive image, and the evaluation of the sense of wearing. The results were as follows; 1) According to comparison for body measuring value before and after wearing brassiere, bust point (B.P.) height, lower bust height, upper chest circumference, chest circumference, and bust depth are increased, and lower chest circumference, bust point breadth, shoulder middle point - B.P., B.P. -under bust, and cup horizontal girth are decreased. 2) The difference of variation volume by material is not accepted. The part above $20\%$ at variation rate is under the region of the armpit, that is, the region connected arm from the back. 3) The subjects replied that they wore the brassiere in order to compensate the breast and needed to wear it regardless of thiness and obesity. They wore the brassiere in order to dress themselves in good shape, and felt that it put pressure upon the body, while it had nothing to do with adjusting bodily temperature and gave the sense of security. 4) The estimate of the sense of wearing by material is recognized as the difference of the attention at attentive level $1\%$. The multiple factor analysis of each item in the sense of wearing showed that the items which are explained over $90\%$ by common factors are '1. Unpreasant in touch', '2. The part of edge is haggard', '15. Not to be fit'.

Effects of pH-treated Fish Sarcoplasmic Proteins on the Functional Properties of Chicken Myofibrillar Protein Gel Mediated by Microbial Transglutaminase

  • pH adjustment would be of advantage in improving the water holding capacity of muscle proteins. The objective of this study was to evaluate the addition of fish sarcoplasmic protein (SP) solution, which was adjusted to pH 3.0 or 12.0, neutralized to pH 7.0, and lyophilized to obtain the acid- and alkaline-treated SP samples, on the functional properties of the chicken myofibrillar protein induced by microbial transglutaminase (MTG). The solubility of alkaline-treated SP was higher than that of the acid counterpart; however, those values of the two pH-treated samples were lower than that of normal SP (p<0.05). All SP solutions were mixed with myofibrillar proteins (MP) extracted from chicken breast, and incubated with MTG. The shear stresses of MP with acid- and alkaline-treated SP were higher than that of normal SP. The thermal stability of MP mixture reduced upon adding SP, regardless of the pH treatment. The breaking force of MP gels with acid-treated SP increased more than those of alkaline-treated SP, while normal SP showed the highest value. The MP gel lightness increased, but cooking loss reduced, with the addition of SP. Smooth microstructure of the gel surface was observed. These results indicated that adjusting the pH of SP improved the water holding capacity of chicken myofibrillar proteins induced by MTG.

Analysis on the Measurement Results of the Focus Motor Position in MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) on KOMPSAT - II

  • The MSC is a high resolution multi-spectral camera system which is mounted on the KOMPSAT-II satellite. The electro-optic camera system has a refocusing mechanism which can be used in-orbit by ground commands. By adjusting locations of some elements in optics, the system can be focused precisely. The focus mechanism in MSC is implemented with stepper motor and potentiometer. By reading the value of the potentiometer, rough position of the motor can be understood. The exact location of the motor can not be acquired because the information from the potentiometer can not be so accurate. However, before and after certain events of the satellite, like a satellite launch, the direction of the movement or order of the magnitude of the movement can be understood. In this paper, the trend analysis of the focus motor position during the ground test phase is introduced. This result can be used as basic information for the focus calibration after launch. By studying the long term trend, deviation from the best focal point can be understood. The positions of the focus motors after launch are also compared.

Sequential Separation of Main Components from Chicken Egg Yolk

  • A study was conducted to develop optimal conditions for a large-scale, sequential separation method for value-added components from egg yolk. Starting with liquid egg yolk, immunoglobulin Y (IgY), phospholipids, and neutral lipids were extracted sequentially using water, ethanol, and n-hexane. The remainder was yolk proteins. Adjusting the pH of diluted egg yolk to pH 5.0-5.2 decreased phospholipids content in the supernatant after centrifugation, which was very important for preventing clogging problem of ultrafiltration filters during the subsequent concentration step for IgY separation. Extraction of precipitants after centrifugation with four volumes of 100% ethanol once removed most of the phospholipids and the purity of phospholipids was more than 85% (wt.) after drying. The subsequent extraction of precipitant from ethanol extraction with four volumes of hexane 3 times removed neutral lipids almost completely and resulted in a high protein product with minimal lipids. The sequential separation method is considered to be advantageous for large-scale separations of many valuable components from egg yolk.

산화마그네슘을 코팅한 마이카의 헤이즈 특성 (Haze Characteristics of Mica Coated with Magnesium Oxide)

  • 무기 복합 입자는 독특한 물리 화학적 특성에 따라 다양한 산업 분야에 응용된다. 최근 마이카와 같은 판상 기질에 유 무기 물질을 코팅하여 광 산란, 굴절 및 투과 특성 등의 광학적 특성을 이용하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 마이카는 높은 화학적 안정성, 내후성 및 무독성의 입자로 안료, 플라스틱, 페인트, 세라믹 등에 널리 적용되고 있다. 산화마그네슘은 높은 빛 투과율, 내식성, 무독성을 갖고 있어, 광학재료 및 고분자 첨가제 등으로 이용되고 있다. 마이카와 산화마그네슘의 광학적 특성을 이용하기 위하여 수산화마그네슘을 용해 재결정하여 마이카 표면에 코팅하였다. 전구체의 농도, pH 변화 등의 공정 변수를 조절하여 적합한 헤이즈 값을 갖는 입자를 합성하였다. 결과적으로 마이카 표면에 수산화마그네슘 층이 형성되고, 4시간 동안 $400^{\circ}C$에서 소성하면 산화마그네슘으로 변환된다. 본 연구에서는 pH와 수산화마그네슘의 첨가량 조절로 헤이즈 값을 쉽게 제어 할 수 있는 것을 보여주었다. 제조된 분체의 광학적 특성은 탁도계(Hazemeter)를 이용해 측정하였고, pH 9에서 가장 높은 값인 85.92%를 얻었다. 복합분체의 물리 화학적 특성은 XRD, SEM, EDS 및 PSA를 통해 확인하였다.

Clinicopathological Features and Survival of Patients with Gastric Cancer with a Family History: a Large Analysis of 2,736 Patients with Gastric Cancer

  • Purpose: Previous studies indicated conflicting results regarding the prognosis of gastric cancer with a family history (FHX). This study aimed to determine the clinicopathological features and survival of patients with gastric cancer with a FHX. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 2,736 patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery between 2003 and 2009. The prognostic value of a FHX was determined in the multivariate model after adjusting for variables in the Asian and internationally validated prognostic models. Results: Of the patients, 413 (15.1%) had a FHX of gastric cancer. The patients with a FHX were younger (58.1 vs. 60.4 years; P<0.001) than the patients without a FHX. There were no significant differences in the histopathological characteristics between the 2 groups. A FHX was associated with a better overall survival (OS) rate only in the stage I group (5-year survival rate, 95% vs. 92%; P=0.006). However, the disease-specific survival (DSS) rate was not significantly different between the 2 groups in all stages. The multivariate model adjusted for the variables in the Asian and internationally validated prognostic models revealed that FHX has no significant prognostic value for OS and DSS. Conclusions: The clinicopathological features and survival of the patients with gastric cancer with a FHX did not significantly differ from those of the patients without a FHX.

Predictive value of sperm motility before and after preparation for the pregnancy outcomes of intrauterine insemination

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate sperm motility and its changes after preparation as predictors of pregnancy in intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles. Methods: In total, 297 IUI cycles from January 2012 to December 2017 at a single tertiary hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Patient and cycle characteristics, and sperm motility characteristics before and after processing were compared according to clinical pregnancy or live birth as outcomes. Results: The overall clinical pregnancy rate per cycle was 14.5% (43/297) and the live birth rate was 10.4% (30/289). Patient and cycle characteristics were similar between pregnant and non-pregnant groups. Sperm motility after preparation and the total motile sperm count before and after processing were comparable in terms of pregnancy outcomes. Pre-preparation sperm motility was significantly higher in groups with clinical pregnancy and live birth than in cycles not resulting in pregnancy (71.4%±10.9% vs. 67.2%±11.7%, p=0.020 and 71.6% ±12.6% vs. 67.3%±11.7%, p=0.030, respectively). The change in sperm motility after processing was significantly fewer in the non-pregnant cycles, both when the comparison was conducted by subtraction (post-pre) and division (post/pre). These relationships remained significant after adjusting for the female partner's age, anti-Müllerian hormone level, and number of pre-ovulatory follicles. According to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, an initial sperm motility of ≥72.5% was the optimal threshold value for predicting live birth after IUI. Conclusion: Initial sperm motility, rather than the motility of processed sperm or the degree of change after preparation, predicted live birth after IUI procedures.
