  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation of survival rates of seedling plants under grown orchardgrass populations and control by the difference cutting frequency. The orchardgrass populations investigated in this study have passed for 10 years after establishment. Cutting frequencies were 3, 4 and 5 times in a year. This experiment was conducted from April to October, 1989 at the experimental field of Institute of Agricultural Development, Yonsei University. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The survival rates of seedling plants decreased by the days after sowing. The final survival rates of seedling plants were 7.8%, 38.9% and 33.8% in 3, 4 and 5 cuttings, respectively. 2. Relative light intensity indicated highly possitive correlation with relative survival rates of seedling plants and negative correlation with plant length of orchardgrass populations in 4 and 5 cuttings. 3. The frequency distribution of survival seedling plants at 177 days after sowing were showed high values in seeding spots near the adjacent plants of 3 cutings, but in the middle of seeding spots between adjacent plants of 4 .and 5 cuttings, respectively. 4. The plant length of seedling became longer towards the seeding spots near the adjacent plants but the number of tillers increased slightly up to the middle of seeding spots between adjacent plants in all cutting frequencies.

  • The Bcl-2 family of proteins interacts at the mitochondria to regulate apoptosis. However, the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and $Bcl-X_L$ are not completely localized to the mitochondria. In an attempt to generate Bcl-2 and $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras that are constitutively localized to the mitochondria, we substituted their C-terminal transmembrane tail or both the C-terminal transmembrane tail and the adjacent loop with the equivalent regions from Bak or Bax mutant (BaxS184V) as these regions determine the mitochondrial localization of Bak and Bax. The effects of these substitutions on subcellular localization and their activities were assessed following expression in HeLa and CHO K1 cells. The substitution of the C-terminal tail or the C-terminal tail and the adjacent loop of Bcl-2 with the equivalent regions from Bak or the Bax mutant resulted in its association with the mitochondria. This change in subcellular localization of Bcl-2 chimeras triggered cells to undergo apoptotic-like cell death. The localization of this Bcl-2 chimera to the mitochondria may be associated with the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. Unlike Bcl-2, the loop structure adjacent to the C-terminal tail in $Bcl-X_L$ is crucial for its localization. To localize the $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras to the mitochondria, the loop structure next to the C-terminal tail in $Bcl-X_L$ protein must remain intact and cannot be substituted by the loop from Bax or Bak. The chimeric $Bcl-X_L$ with both its C-terminal tail and the loop structure replaced by the equivalent regions of Bak or Bax mutant localized throughout the entire cytosol. The $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras that are targeted to the mitochondria and the wild type $Bcl-X_L$ provided same protection against cell death under several death inducing conditions.

  • The crystal structure of a sulfur sorption complex of the dehydrated partially Co2+ exchanged zeolite A (a=12.058(2) Å) has been determined by single-crystal X-ray techniques. The crystal structure was solved and refined in cubic space group Pm3m at 21(1) ℃. Ion Exchange with aqueous 0.05 M Co(NO3)2 was done by the static method. The crystal of Na4Co4-A was dehydrated at 380 ℃ and 2 × 10-6 Torr for 2 days, followed by exposure to about 100 Torr of sulfur at 330 ℃ for 72 h. Full matrix least-squares refinement converged to R1=0.084 and Rw=0.074 with 102 reflections for which I > 3σ(I). Crystallographic analysis shows that 2.8 Co2+ ions and 4 Na+ ions per unit cell occupy 6-ring sites on the threefold axes. 1.2 Co2+ ions occupy the 8-ring sites on fourfold axes. 2.8 Co2+ ions at Co(1) are recessed 0.66 Å into the large cavity and 4 Na+ ion at Na(1) are recessed 0.77 Å into the sodalite cavity from the (111) plane of O(3)'s. Approximately 16 sulfur atoms were sorbed per unit cell. Two S8 rings, each in a butterfly form, are found in the large cavity. The bond length between S and its adjacent S is 2.27(3) Å. The distance between 6-ring Co2+ ion and its adjacent sulfur is 2.53 (2) Å and that between 8-ring Co2+ ions and its adjacent sulfur is 2.72(9) Å. The angles of S-S'-S and S'-S-S'/ in octasulfur rings are 119.0(2)°and 113.0(2)°, respectively.

  • As the construction of trans infrastructure using the underground tunnel have been rapidly increased, various nearby excavation of existed underground facility including subway structure has been occurred in urban tunnelling. The concern and worry relating to the safety and stability of the existed facility by nearby excavation is becoming the key issues in urban tunnelling. In this study, it was conducted for existed the subway station structure at Seoul subway line which was closely located in the new Dongbuk urban metro railway to determine the behavior characteristics of station structure according to adjacent tunnel construction. Also, it was reviewed the evaluation of the safety zone and excavation method for subway structure. And after a review of damage evaluation, track irregularities and structural calculation by using a numerical analysis, stability of the subway structure according to nearby tunnel excavation was evaluated to be secured. This study is expected to be applied as useful reference in advance if you need to review the effects of existed structure according to nearby construction in complex urban tunnelling.

  • Development of underground space is actively performed globally for better life in the surface, and the scale of the space is increasing. Extreme care should be taken in the construction of the underground space in urban areas in order to avoid damage of adjacent structures and interference with existing underground space. In case of shallow tunnels, reinforcement of ground and structures is necessary to minimize the damage to structures due to excavation but any standard for optimum range of the reinforcement has not been established yet. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses have been performed for a 20 m diameter tunnel excavated underneath a structure to investigate the degree of damage of the structure according to vertical and horizontal spacing between the tunnel and structure. In addition to that, optimum range of reinforcement is presented for each case where reinforcement is required. It has been observed that the reinforcement is necessary for the ground condition adapted in the analyses as follows: (1) if horizontal spacing ($S_{H}$) approaches to 0D (D: equivalent diameter of tunnel) for vertical spacing (Sv) of 0.5D, and (2) if tunnel exists underneath the structure for vertical spacing (Sv) of 0.75D. The reinforcement is not necessary for Sv of 10 regardless of $S_{H}$. It also has been obtained that the optimum ranges of the reinforcement around structure foundation are 7 m in depth and whole width of the structure and 5 m beyond tunnel sidewall. These reinforcememt ranges have been confirmed to be enough for stability of the structure if types of reinforcement method is appropriately selected.

  • When deep excavation adjacent to an existing structure is performed, it is very important to minimize damage on the structure through the prediction of ground movement. In this paper, finite element analysis was performed to predict the ground movement, based on the data from site investigation and laboratory tests, when deep excavation close to a buried water tank was carried out in soft clay ground. The movement and stabilities of the soil-cement wall(SCW) and the adjacent structure were checked using the results of the analysis and the field measurement. The comparison between the measured and the predicted ground movements showed the significance of the excavation procedure and lowering of water level in the analytical model. In the future, it is needed to improve the prediction method for better estimation of the ground movement.

  • Recent studies of the structure of wall turbulence have lead to the development of a conceptual model that validates and integrates many elements of previous models into a relatively simple picture based on self-assembling packets of hairpin vortex eddies. By continual spawning new hairpins the packets grow longer in the streamwise direction, and by mutual induction between adjacent hairpins the hairpins are strained so that they grow taller and wider as they age. The result is a characteristic growth angle in the streamwise-wall normal plane. The spanwise growth of individual packets implies that packets must either merge or pass through each other when they come into contact. Direct numerical simulations of the growth and interaction of spanwise adjacent hairpins shows that they merge by the vortex connection mechanism originally proposed by Wark and Nagib (199). In this mechanism the quasi-streamwise legs of two hairpins annihilate each other, by virtue of having opposite vorticity, leaving a new hairpin of approximately double the width of the individuals. PIV measurements in planes parallel to the wall support this picture. DNS of multiple hairpins shows how the spanwise scale doubles when the hairpins form an array.

  • Recently, with the rapid development and demand for compactness of portable communications, the requirement for compact and low-cost filter is increasing. One of the methods for reducing size and cost is to use high dielectric constant and low loss dielectric material in filter. The other is new monoblock dielectric band-pass filter (BPF) which has holes in a single dielectric body without additional coupling elements. This structure effectively reduces the size and cost of the filters. For previous conventional coaxial type dielectric BPF, dielectric substrates were used for coupling between adjacent resonators and additional input and output ports were needed. Coupling between adjacent resonators of monoblock BPF can be otained via electrode pairs. Capacitances of electrode pair structure for coupling are intensively investigated by 3-D FEM. The BPF for PCS has been designed to have a 30 MHz pass-bandwidth with center frequency of 1855 MHz and an attenuation pole at below the passband using a commercial 3-D structure simulator.

  • Understanding soil microbial community structure in the Arctic is essential for predicting the impact of climate change on interactions between organisms living in polar environments. The hypothesis of the present study was that soil microbial communities and soil chemical characteristics would vary depending on their associated plant species and local environments in Arctic mature soils. We analyzed soil bacterial communities and soil chemical characteristics from soil without vegetation (bare soil) and rhizosphere soil of three Arctic plants (Cassiope tetragona [L.] D. Don, Dryas octopetala L. and Silene acaulis [L.] Jacq.) in different local environments (coal-mined site and seashore-adjacent site). We did not observe any clear differences in microbial community structure in samples belonging to different plant rhizospheres; however, samples from different environmental sites had distinct microbial community structure. The samples from coal-mined site had a relatively higher abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. On the other hand, Acidobacteria was more prevalent in seashore-adjacent samples. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria decreased toward higher soil pH, whereas that of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes was positively correlated with soil pH. Our results suggest that soil bacterial community dissimilarity can be driven by spatial heterogeneity in deglaciated mature soil. Furthermore, these results indicate that soil microbial composition and relative abundance are more affected by soil pH, an abiotic factor, than plant species, a biotic factor.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adjacent stand on the invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia plantations. The results were as follows. 1) Robinia pseudoacacia tended to invade into all directions regardless of the kinds of adjacent stands. But it was estimated that the invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia into adjacent stands could be very difficult, if the layer structure of adjacent stands were well developed. Whereas, it was estimated that Robinia pseudoacacia more rapidly intruded into adjacent stands, if adjacent stands were opened and bared. 2) Robinia pseudoacacia tended to invade into all aspects regardless of the kinds of vegetation units in the adjacent stands. But the dominance class of Robinia pseudoacacia in the adjacent stands showed a little differences among the vegetation units. The dominance class of Robinia pseudoacacia in Quercus aliena community and Quercus serrata community showed low level as + ~2, while the dominance class of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus rigida community, Quercus variabilis community and Quercus acutissima community represented high level as 1~4. Also the dominance class of Isodon inflexus subgroup among three subgroups of Pinus densiflora community showed the lowest level as + ~2.
