  • ESCP Project showed an urban excavation case and introduced design method for case of Soil-Structure behavior in urban excavation. In this case, a retaining structures design to analysis the behavior of retaining wall and adjacent structures in urban excavations was applied by using a Elasto-plastic beam and limit Equilibrium analysis and soil-structure interaction analysis. Reliable design of earth retaining structures and the ground adjacent to braced wall in urban excavation are often difficult due to many variable factors. The ground settlement and the damage of adjacent structures in urban excavation has been an imprtant issue. Therefore, the stability of the adjacent structures must be secured with the excavation support and research on the protection of adjacent structure is necessary.

  • To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.

  • It comes to be an important point to judge precisely the effects of excavation on adjacent ground and structures. It is incorrect to evaluate the ground settlement by excavation without considering the adjacent structure. In this study, laboratory scale tests were carried out by varying the position of structure under the condition of different system stiffness and wall friction to evaluate the behavior of adjacent structures and ground by excavation. When the distance between the structures and the wall was less than 0.3 times of the excavation depth, the ground settlement increased by 181%. No additional effect was observed when the distance was more than 1.0H. As the embedded depth was deeper, the influence zone was smaller, and few additional settlements and angular displacement were observed when the embedded depth was more than 0.75H.

  • During deep excavation, changes in the state of stress in the ground mass around the excavation and subsequent ground losses inevitably occur. These changes in the stress and ground losses are reflected on surrounding ground in the form of ground movements, which eventually Impose strains onto nearby structures through translation, rotation, distortion, and possibly damage. A substantial portion of the cost of deep excavations in urban environments is, therefore, devoted to prevent ground movements. Prediction of ground movements and assessment of the risk of damage to adjacent structures has become an essential part of the planning, design, and construction of a deep excavation project in the urban environments. This paper presents excavation-induced ground movement characteristics as well as important issues related to excavation-induced building damage assessment.

  • Adjacent ground surface settlements by deep excavations are analyzed by field observations in the areas where excavations are performed in sandy soils or weathered soils underlain by rocks, First, the magnitude and the distribution of ground surface settlements, which are developed before main excavation activities (e. g., diaphragm wall installation and center pile installation) , are measured and analyzed. Secondly, the magnitude and the distribution of ground surface settlements by main excavation are measured and analyzed. And the results are compared with the predictions obtained by the empirical methods. Through case studies performed on the excavation sites where adjacent ground surfaces or structures are damaged by excavation activities, upper limit location of ground surface cracks are investigated.

  • When deep excavation adjacent to an existing structure is performed, it is very important to minimize damage on the structure through the prediction of ground movement. In this paper, finite element analysis was performed to predict the ground movement, based on the data from site investigation and laboratory tests, when deep excavation close to a buried water tank was carried out in soft clay ground. The movement and stabilities of the soil-cement wall(SCW) and the adjacent structure were checked using the results of the analysis and the field measurement. The comparison between the measured and the predicted ground movements showed the significance of the excavation procedure and lowering of water level in the analytical model. In the future, it is needed to improve the prediction method for better estimation of the ground movement.

  • The bracing system using screw jack is not effective for the restraining of adjacent ground displacement. since the screw jack dose not induce sufficient preloading on struts. In order to protect excessive displacement of adjacent ground at braced excavation, new preloading jack was developed in the country. In this paper, the new preloading jack and the measurement results of the lateral displacement of braced wall at three deep excavation sites in Seoul city are introduced. The measurement results showed that the maximum displacements of braced wall are smaller than 0.15% of excavation depth, therefore the wall displacements can be minimized by preloading which is acted on bracing. If the bracing system with new preloading jack is used in braced excavation, it is effective for reducing the cost and period of construction.

  • Pre-loads could be imposed on the braced wall to prevent the horizontal displacements during the ground excavation adjacent to the existing tunnel. For this purpose, new pre-loading system through which large pre-loads could be applied to the braced wall was used in the model tests. Large scale model tests were performed in the real scale test pit which was 2.0 m in width and 6.0 m in hight and 4.0 m in length. Test ground was constructed by sand. Model tunnel in 1.2 m diameter was constructed before test ground excavation. Test ground was excavated adjacent to existing tunnel and was braced. To investigate the effect of pre-loading, tests without pre-load were also performed. During the ground excavation were the behavior of braced wall, test tunnel, and ground measured. Model tests were also numerically analysed and their results were compared to that of the real scale tests. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel was greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacements of braced wall was reduced by applying pre-load larger than the design load.

  • The ground excavation in the urban area induces in general ground movement and subsequent damage on the adjacent building structures. So the essentials in the designing stage are the prediction of ground movement induced by the ground excavation and the damage risk assessment of buildings adjacent to the excavation. A propsed prediction method of the ground movement induced by the strutted excavation has been studied with due consideration of the existing ground movement prediction methods. A building damage risk assessment method based on the angular distortion and the horizontal strain derived from the green-field ground movement is also proposed. These methods have been applied successfully in the on-going deep excavation project in Singapore.

  • If the ground is excavated in a depth which is deeper than the adjacent existing tunnel, the behavior of the braced wall is known to be greatly affected by the presence of the tunnel. By the way it is expected to be also affected by the structure on the ground surface, There are not many examples of studies which are conducted on this subject. As a result, largel scale model tests and analysis were conducted, to measure the behavior of the tunnel under the building whose location on the ground surface was varied during the adjacent ground excavation. For this purpose, the location of a building load was varied in 0 m, 1D, 2D on ground surface. In this paper, the behaviors of braced wall and adjacent tunnel was studied. Model tests in 1 : 10 scale were performed in real construction sequences. The size of test pit was $2.0m(width){\times}6.0m(height){\times}4.0m(length)$ in dimension. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel under the influence of the building load on the ground surface adjacent to the braced wall.
