  • Objective : Epidural fibrosis and adhesion are the main reasons for post-laminectomy sustained pain and functional disability. In this study, the authors investigate the effect of irradiated freeze-dried human amniotic membrane on reducing epidural adhesion after laminectomy on a rat model. Methods : A total of 20 rats were divided into two groups. The group A did not receive human amniotic membrane implantation after laminectomy and group B underwent human amniotic membrane implantation after laminectomy. Gross and microscopic findings were evaluated and compared at postoperative 1, 3 and 8 weeks. Results : The amount of scar tissue and tenacity were reduced grossly in group of rats with human amniotic membrane implantation (group B). On a microscopic evaluation, there were less inflammatory cell infiltration and fibroblast proliferation in group B. Conclusion : This experimental study shows that implantation of irradiated freeze-dried human amniotic membrane reduce epidural fibrosis and adhesion after spinal laminectomy in a rat model.

  • In the process of ice-slurry making, the phenomenon of ice adhesion influences extremely to ice making system. In this study, the effect on the ice adhesion by thermal storage material with additives is investigated quantitatively. Various solutions of 300 g in a stainless vessel were frozen under stirring. Through the experiment the ice adhesion between cooling wall and ice-slurry was compared with each other by measuring the stirring power. From the experiment, the stirring power in EG, SCA solution was smaller than those in the solution containing functional materials, such as poly-vinyl-alcohol or kitchen detergent.

  • Adhesion property of epoxy adhesive was evaluated with different surface roughness of glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRC) and optimized condition of surface roughness was confirmed. Different sizes of alumina (Al2O3) particles were blasted to GFRC to control surface roughness of GFRC using sand blasting method. The surface roughness was measured and quantified via surface roughness tester. Contact angle was measured using four types of different solvents. Surface energies and work of adhesion between epoxy adhesive and GFRCs were calculated with different surface roughness of GFRC. Adhesion property between epoxy adhesive and GFRCs was evaluated using single lap shear test and adhesion property increased with surface roughness of GFRC. The fracture surface of GFRCs was observed to evaluate adhesion property. Finally, the optimized roughness condition of GFRCs was confirmed.

  • Ice accumulation on Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced(ACSR) cable during winter is an important matter in terms of safety, economy, and efficient power supply. In this work, the ice adhesion strengths of ACSR cable oxidized during different periods(7 years oxidized and 15 years oxidized) are evaluated. At first, a plate type dry oxidation standard specimen, whose surface characteristics are similar to those of ACSR cable, is prepared. Dry oxidation standard specimens are heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 20, 60, and 120 minutes in order to obtain different degrees of oxidation. After the dry oxidation, surface properties are analyzed using contact angle analyzer, atomic force microscopy, spectrophotometer, and gloss meter. The ice adhesion strengths are measured using an ice pull-off tester. Correlations between the surface properties and the ice adhesion strength are obtained through a regression analysis indicating a Boltzmann equation. It is revealed that the ice adhesion strength of 15-year oxidized ACSR cable is approximately 8 times higher than that of ACSR-bare.

  • The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively investigate aging state of epoxy coating on containment structure at nuclear power plant. In order to evaluate an physical bonding of the epoxy coating, adhesion test was performed on a degraded epoxy coating on concrete specimens fabricated by accelerated aging experiment. In addition, impedance data by ultrasonic test were measured to compare with adhesion data. From almost 50 % of the specimens, aging phenomena of epoxy coating such as pin hole, blistering was discovered. To improve reliability on quality degradation of epoxy, co-relation between two kinds of different data was analyzed. By tracing co-related these data, it was possible to figure out physical state of as-built epoxy coating. The possibility to develop new methodology of time - dependent aging state on epoxy coating was found and discussed.

  • This work presents an experiment study to evaluate the nanoparticle adhesion and surface hydrophobicity characteristics of Teflon-polyurethane top coat depending on the number of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coatings, which is a carbon-based hydrophobic particle. In order to measure the adhesion between the nanoparticles and the top coat, adhesion pull-off test was performed with different MWCNT oxidation times. Static contact angle and roughness measurements were carried out to characterize the surface hydrophobic behavior. Through the roughness evaluation, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotubes were wetted in the Teflon-polyurethane top coat, and the degree carbon nanotube wetting was confirmed through a USB-microscope. As a result, it was found that the larger the degree of wetting, the better the adhesion. From the experimental results, as the hydrophobicity of Teflon-polyurethane increased, the adhesive propertydecreased with the number of coatings. It was possible to improve the adhesive force and determine the number of coatings of carbon nanotubes with optimized hydrophobicity.

  • PURPOSE. Bacterial adhesion on provisional crown materials retained for a long time can influence the duration for which permanent prosthetic restorations can be healthily worn in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to compare seven different commonly used provisional crown materials with regard to Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans surface adhesion. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For each group, twenty specimens of the provisional fixed prosthodontic materials TemDent ($Sch{\ddot{u}}tz$), Imident (Imicryl), Tab 2000 (Kerr), Structur Premium (Voco), Systemp (Ivoclar Vivadent), Acrytemp (Zhermack), and Takilon-BBF (Takilon) were prepared (diameter, 10.0 mm; height, 2.0 mm). Surface roughness was assessed by atomic force microscopy. Each group was then divided into 2 subgroups (n=10) according to the microbial suspensions used: S. mutans and C. albicans. The specimens were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ with S. mutans or C. albicans for seven days. Bacterial adherence on surfaces was assessed using the 2,3-bis[2-methyloxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) assay. RESULTS. S. mutans showed maximum adhesion to Structur, followed by Systemp, Acrytemp, Takilon, Tab 2000, Imident, and TemDent (P<.05). The highest vital C. albicans adhesion was noted on Takilon, followed by Imident and Tab 2000; the lowest adhesion was noted on Systemp (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The materials showed significant differences in the degree of bacterial adhesion. C. albicans showed higher surface adhesion than S. mutans on provisional crown and fixed partial denture denture materials.
