  • Application of polar codes to rate-adaptive asymmetric Slepian-Wolf coding is considered. We propose a method of constructing polar codes which supports rate adaptivity. The proposed polar distributed source coding with successive cancellation list decoding performs closer to the Slepian-Wolf bound than the low density parity check accumulate (LDPCA) codes in the same framework.

  • In this paper polarization adaptivity on transmit has been used to enhance the received signals directed to a pre-selected receiver in a near-field multi-input multi-output (MIMO) environment. The objective here is to select a set of weights on the transmitting antennas adapted to individual receivers based on the principles of reciprocity. Using the polarization properties, when the number of receiving antennas is greater than the number of transmitting antennas, the transmitted signal may be directed more to a particular receiver location while simultaneously minimizing the reception signal strength at other receivers. Numerical simulations have been made to illustrate the novelty of the proposed approach.

  • This paper proposes a compliance robot control algorithm using fuzzy adaptive controller and fuzzy compliance vector generator. In the compliance robot control, we need more adaptivity because the linear modeling in robot dynamics is getting more difficult by contact with external environment. Existing adapitive controllers have difficulty in realtime processing. So in order to overcome it, We adopt fuzzy adaptive controller and propose fuzzy compliance vector generator for flexible compliant motion. We analyze and confirm the proposed algorithm by surface processing experiment with a control system implemented by VME system.

  • In this paper we propose a Genetic Algorithm for the path planning of an autonomous mobile robot. Genetic Algorithms(GAs) have advantages of the adaptivity such as GAs work even if an environment is time-varying or unknown. Therefore, we propose the path planning algorithms using the GAs-based approach and show more adaptive and optimal performance by simulation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to maximize the efficiency of a content-based image retrieval for various kinds of images. This paper discuss the self-adaptivity for the change of image domain and the self-selection of optimal features for query image, and present the efficient method to maximize content-based retrieval for various kinds of images. In this method, a content-based retrieval system is adopted to select automatically distinctive feature patterns which have a maximum efficiency of image retrieval in various kinds of images. Experimental results show that the Proposed method is improved 3% than the method using individual features.

  • Disordered streams may cause inaccurate or delayed results in window-based queries. Existing approaches usually leverage buffers to hand]e the streams. However, most of the approaches estimate the buffer size simply based on the maximum network delay in the streams, which tends to over-estimate the buffer size and result in high latency. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic approach to estimate the buffer size adaptively according to the fluctuated network delays. We first assume that intervals of tuple generations follow an exponential distribution and network delays have a normal distribution. Then, we derive an estimation function from the assumptions. The function takes a drop ratio as an input parameter, which denotes a percentage of tuple drops permissible during query execution. By describing the drop ratio in a query specification, users can control the quality of query results such as accuracy or latency according to application requirements. Our experimental results show that the proposed function has better adaptivity than the existing function based on the maximum network delay.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between nurses' self-leadership and individual work role performance and correlations between self-leadership in nursing units and team members' work role performance. Methods: Participants were 202 conveniently selected general nurses from 5 general hospitals in Korea. The study was carried out on 35 nursing units. Data were collected during February 2015 with self-report questionnaires. Results: For factors affecting individual work role performance, self-expectation, self-goal setting, constructive thought, clinical career in the present nursing unit and marital status accounted for 44.0% of proficiency, while self-expectation, self-goal setting, constructive thought, and marital status accounted for 42.3% of adaptivity. Self-expectation, self-goal setting, constructive thought, self-reward, clinical career in the present nursing unit and position accounted for 26.4% of proactivity. In terms of team members' work role performance, self-reward and self-expectation in nursing units explained 29.0% of team members' proficiency. Self-reward and self-expectation in nursing units explained 31.6% of team members' adaptivity, and self-reward in nursing units explained 16.8% of team members' proactivity. Conclusion: The results confirm that nurses' self-leadership affects not only individual self-leadership but also team members' work role performance. Accordingly, to improve nurses' work role performance in nursing units of nursing organizations, improvement in nursing environment based on self-leadership education is necessary and nurses' tasks rearranged so they can appreciate work-autonomy and challenges of work.

  • The performance of Motion Compensated Discrete Cosine Transform (MC-DCT) video coding is improved by using the region adaptive subband image coding [18]. On the assumption that the video is acquired from the camera on a moving platform and the distance between the camera and the scene is large enough, both the motion of camera and the motion of moving objects in a frame are compensated. For the compensation of camera motion, a feature matching algorithm is employed. Several feature points extracted using a Sobel operator are used to compensate the camera motion of translation, rotation, and zoom. The illumination change between frames is also compensated. Motion compensated frame differences are divided into three regions called stationary background, moving objects, and newly emerging areas each of which is arbitrarily shaped. Different quantizers are used for different regions. Compared to the conventional MC-DCT video coding using block matching algorithm, our video coding scheme shows about 1.0-dB improvements on average for the experimental video samples.
