Traditional methods of measuring corneal ulcers were difficult to present objective basis for diagnosis because of the subjective judgment of the medical staff through photographs taken with special equipment. In this paper, we propose a method to detect the ulcer area on a pixel basis in corneal ulcer images using a semantic segmentation model. In order to solve this problem, we performed the experiment to detect the ulcer area based on the DeepLab model which has the highest performance in semantic segmentation model. For the experiment, the training and test data were selected and the backbone network of DeepLab model which set as Xception and ResNet, respectively were evaluated and compared the performances. We used Dice similarity coefficient and IoU value as an indicator to evaluate the performances. Experimental results show that when 'crop & resized' images are added to the dataset, it segment the ulcer area with an average accuracy about 93% of Dice similarity coefficient on the DeepLab model with ResNet101 as the backbone network. This study shows that the semantic segmentation model used for object detection also has an ability to make significant results when classifying objects with irregular shapes such as corneal ulcers. Ultimately, we will perform the extension of datasets and experiment with adaptive learning methods through future studies so that they can be implemented in real medical diagnosis environment.
This study aims to examine how visitors in science centers interact with gesture-based exhibits from embodied cognition perspectives. Four gesture-based exhibits in two science centers were selected for this study. In addition, we interviewed a total of 14 visitor groups to examine how they perceived the property of gesture-based exhibit. We also interviewed four experts to further examine the benefits and limitations of the current gesture-based exhibits in science centers. The research results indicate that the total amount of interaction time between visitors and gesture-based exhibits was not high overall, implying that there was little of visitors' immersive engagement. Both experts and visitors expressed that the current gesture-based exhibits tend to highlight the novelty effect but little obvious impacts linking gestures and learning. Drawing from the key findings, this study suggests the following design considerations for gesture-based exhibits. First, to increate visitor's initial engagement, the purpose and usability of gesture-based exhibits should be considered from the initial phase of design. Second, to promote meaningful interaction, it is important to sustain visitors' initial engagement. For that, gesture-based exhibits should be transformed to promote intellectual curiosity beyond simple interaction. Third, from embodied cognition perspectives, exhibits design should reflect how the mappings between specific gestures and metaphors affect learning processes. Lastly, this study suggests that future gesture-based exhibits should be designed toward promoting interaction among visitors and adaptive inquiry.

This study aims to explain the key concepts and principles of text-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) that has been receiving increasing interest and utilization, focusing on its application in science education. It also highlights the potential and limitations of utilizing generative AI in science education, providing insights for its implementation and research aspects. Recent advancements in generative AI, predominantly based on transformer models consisting of encoders and decoders, have shown remarkable progress through optimization of reinforcement learning and reward models using human feedback, as well as understanding context. Particularly, it can perform various functions such as writing, summarizing, keyword extraction, evaluation, and feedback based on the ability to understand various user questions and intents. It also offers practical utility in diagnosing learners and structuring educational content based on provided examples by educators. However, it is necessary to examine the concerns regarding the limitations of generative AI, including the potential for conveying inaccurate facts or knowledge, bias resulting from overconfidence, and uncertainties regarding its impact on user attitudes or emotions. Moreover, the responses provided by generative AI are probabilistic based on response data from many individuals, which raises concerns about limiting insightful and innovative thinking that may offer different perspectives or ideas. In light of these considerations, this study provides practical suggestions for the positive utilization of AI in science education.
A high-performance robust hybrid speed controller for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive with an on-line trained neural-network model-following controller (NNMFC) is proposed. The robust hybrid controller is a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) integral plus proportional & rate feedback (I-PD) with neural-network model-following (NNMF) speed controller (2DOF I-PD NNMFC). The robust controller combines the merits of the 2DOF I-PD controller and the NNMF controller to regulate the speed of a PMSM drive. First, a systematic mathematical procedure is derived to calculate the parameters of the synchronous d-q axes PI current controllers and the 2DOF I-PD speed controller according to the required specifications for the PMSM drive system. Then, the resulting closed loop transfer function of the PMSM drive system including the current control loop is used as the reference model. In addition to the 200F I-PD controller, a neural-network model-following controller whose weights are trained on-line is designed to realize high dynamic performance in disturbance rejection and tracking characteristics. According to the model-following error between the outputs of the reference model and the PMSM drive system, the NNMFC generates an adaptive control signal which is added to the 2DOF I-PD speed controller output to attain robust model-following characteristics under different operating conditions regardless of parameter variations and load disturbances. A computer simulation is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed 200F I-PD NNMF controller. The results confirm that the proposed 2DOF I-PO NNMF speed controller produces rapid, robust performance and accurate response to the reference model regardless of load disturbances or PMSM parameter variations.

The conventional fixed gain PI controller is very sensitive to step change of command speed, parameter variation and load disturbances. The precise speed control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drive becomes a complex issue due to nonlinear coupling among its winding currents and the rotor speed as well as the nonlinear electromagnetic developed torque. Therefore, there exists a need to tune the PI controller parameters on-line to ensure optimum drive performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This paper proposes hybrid intelligent-PI(HIPI) controller of IPMSM drive using adaptive learning mechanism(ALM) and fuzzy neural network(FNN). The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed control of IPMSM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. The PI controller parameters are optimized by ALM-FNN at all possible operating condition in a closed loop vector control scheme, The validity of the proposed controller is verified by results at different dynamic operating conditions.

Reliability assessment of complex structures using simulation methods is time-consuming. Thus, surrogate models are usually employed to reduce computational cost. AK-MCS is a surrogate-based Active learning method combining Kriging and Monte-Carlo Simulation for structural reliability analysis. This paper proposes three modifications of the AK-MCS method to reduce the number of calls to the performance function. The first modification is related to the definition of an initial Design of Experiments (DoE). In the original AK-MCS method, an initial DoE is created by a random selection of samples among the Monte Carlo population. Therefore, samples in the failure region have fewer chances to be selected, because a small number of samples are usually located in the failure region compared to the safe region. The proposed method in this paper is based on a uniform selection of samples in the predefined domain, so more samples may be selected from the failure region. Another important parameter in the AK-MCS method is the size of the initial DoE. The algorithm may not predict the exact limit state surface with an insufficient number of initial samples. Thus, the second modification of the AK-MCS method is proposed to overcome this problem. The third modification is relevant to the type of regression trend in the AK-MCS method. The original AK-MCS method uses an ordinary Kriging model, so the regression part of Kriging model is an unknown constant value. In this paper, the effect of regression trend in the AK-MCS method is investigated for a benchmark problem, and it is shown that the appropriate choice of regression type could reduce the number of calls to the performance function. A stepwise approach is also presented to select a suitable trend of the Kriging model. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed modifications.
A fuzzy-ART(adaptive resonance theory) network for the PVC(premature ventricular contraction) classification using wavelet coefficient is designed. This network consists of the feature extraction and learning of the fuzzy-ART network. In the first step, we have detected the QRS from the ECG signal in order to set the threshold range for feature extraction and the detected QRS was divided into several frequency bands by wavelet transformation using Haar wavelet. Among the low-frequency bands, only the 6th coefficient(D6) are selected as the input feature. After that, the fuzzy-ART network for classification of the PVC is learned by using input feature which comprises of binary data converted by applying threshold to D6. The MIT/BIH database including the PVC is used for the evaluation. The designed fuzzy-ART network showed the PVC classification ratio of 96.52%.

This paper proposes improved detection schemes for concealed micro-electronic devices using clustering and classification of radio frequency harmonics in order to protect intellectual property rights. In general, if a radio wave with a specific fundamental frequency is propagated from the transmitter of a classifier to a concealed object, the second and the third harmonics will be returned as the radio wave is reflected. Using this principle, we exploit the fuzzy c-means clustering and the ${\kappa}$-nearest neighbor classification for detecting diverse concealed objects. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can detect electronic devices and metal devices in various learning environments by efficient classification. Thus, the proposed schemes can be utilized as an effective detection method for concealed micro-electronic device to protect intellectual property rights.

In pattern recognition and machine learning society, classification has been a classical problem and the most widely researched area. Adaptive boosting also known as Adaboost has been successfully applied to binary classification problems. It is a kind of boosting algorithm capable of constructing a strong classifier through a weighted combination of weak classifiers. On the other hand, the PCA and LDA algorithms are the most popular linear feature extraction methods used mainly for dimensionality reduction. In this paper, the combination of Adaboost and feature extraction methods is proposed for efficient classification of two class data. Conventionally, in classification problems, the roles of feature extraction and classification have been distinct, i.e., a feature extraction method and a classifier are applied sequentially to classify input variable into several categories. In this paper, these two steps are combined into one resulting in a good classification performance. More specifically, each projection vector is treated as a weak classifier in Adaboost algorithm to constitute a strong classifier for binary classification problems. The proposed algorithm is applied to UCI dataset and FRGC dataset and showed better recognition rates than sequential application of feature extraction and classification methods.
Freshwater macrophytes improve the structural heterogeneity of microhabitats in water, often providing an important habitat for zooplankton. Some studies have focused on the overall influence of macrophytes on zooplankton, but the effects of macrophyte in relation to different habitat characteristics of zooplankton (e.g., epiphytic and pelagic) have not been intensively studied. We hypothesized that different habitat structures (i.e., macrophyte habitat) would strongly affect zooplankton distribution. We investigated zooplankton density and diversity, macrophyte characteristics (dry weight and species number), and environmental parameters in 40 shallow wetlands in South Korea. Patterns in the data were analyzed using a self-organizing map (SOM), which extracts information through competitive and adaptive properties. A total of 20 variables (11 environmental parameters and 9 zooplankton groups) were patterned onto the SOM. Based on a U-matrix, 3 clusters were identified from the model. Zooplankton assemblages were positively related to macrophyte characteristics (i.e., dry weight and species number). In particular, epiphytic species (i.e., epiphytic rotifers and cladocerans) exhibited a clear relationship with macrophyte characteristics, while large biomass and greater numbers of macrophyte species supported high zooplankton assemblages. Consequently, habitat heterogeneity in the macrophyte bed was recognized as an important factor to determine zooplankton distribution, particularly in epiphytic species. The results indicate that macrophytes are critical for heterogeneity in lentic freshwater ecosystems, and the inclusion of diverse plant species in wetland construction or restoration schemes is expected to generate ecologically healthy food webs.
