  • A 3-D finite element model combined with a volume tracking method is presented in this work to simulate the mold filling for casting processes. Especially, the analysis involves an adaptive grid method that is created under a criterion of element categorization of filling states and locations in the total region at each time step. By using an adaptive grid wherein the elements, finer than those in internal and external regions, are distributed at the surface region through refinement and coarsening procedures, a more efficient analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface is achieved. Adaptive grid based on VOF method is developed in tetrahedral element system. Through a 3-D analysis of the benchmark test of the casting process, the efficiency of the proposed adaptive grid method is verified. Developed FE code is applied to a typical industrial part of the casting process such as aluminum road wheel.

  • In this paper, we address the channel zapping time problem of video streaming services based on HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) on smart Over-The-Top Set-Top Boxes (OTT STBs). Experimental analysis of the channel zapping time, show that smart OTT STBs inevitably suffer from the accumulated zapping time through channel change request, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) leave/join, synchronization delay, video buffer delay, and STB processing delay when providing HLS services. As a practical solution for the zapping time reduction, an adaptive buffering method is proposed. The proposed method exploits two adaptive buffers added to the basic HLS player. These two adaptive buffers are responsible for constantly buffering previous and next channels relative to the current channel. Implementation and test results show that a stable zapping time less than one second can be achieved even under diverse video bitrate changes and varying network conditions by the proposed adaptive buffering method.

By applying these modules to e-learning and offline learning, they motivate learners and improve the quality of learning progress and effective learning outcomes can be achieved for immersive self-directed learning Research design, data, and methodology - EEG data were collected simultaneously as the English test was given to the experimenters, and the correlation between the correct answer result and the EEG data was learned with a machine learning algorithm and the predictive model was evaluated.. Result - In model performance evaluation, both artificial neural networks(ANNs) and support vector machines(SVMs) showed high accuracy of more than 91%. Conclusion - This research provides some modules of personalized adaptive learning systems that can more efficiently complete by designing a PEF system for real-time learning achievement prediction and learning motivation through an adaptive learning system based on real-time EEG analysis of learners. The implication of this initial research is to verify hypothetical situations for the development of an adaptive learning system through EEG analysis-based learning achievement prediction.

  • To improve the detection performance of surveillance radars with polarization diversity, we developed an adaptive polarimetric processor and compared it with other polarimetric processors. We derived our adaptive polarimetric processor, called the polarization discontinuity detector (PDD), from the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) test principle for the unspecified target component. We derived closed-form expressions of its probabilities of detection and false alarm, and compared its performance to that of the adaptive polarization canceller (APC) and Kelly's GLR processor. The PDD had a performance similar to Kelly's GLR in Gaussian clutter, and both the PDD and Kelly's GLR, which have embedded constant false alarm rates (CFARs), outperformed the APC, especially when the target polarization state was close to the clutter's polarization state. The important difference is that the PDD is much simpler than Kelly's GLR for hardware/software implementation, because the PDD does not require a costly two-parameter filter bank to cover the unknown target polarization state as Kelly's GLR does.

  • The phased array antenna has the ability to perform adaptive sampling by directing the radar beam without inertia in any direction. The adaptive sampling capability of the phased array antenna allows each sampling time interval to be varied for each target, depending on the acceleration of each target at any time. In this paper we design a three-dimensional adaptive tracking algorithm for the phased array radar system with a given set of measurement parameters. The tracking algorithm avoids taking unnecessarily frequent samples, while keeping the angular prediction error within a fraction of antenna beamwidth so that the probability of detection will not be degraded during a track update illuminations. In our algorithm, the target model and the sampling rate are selected depending on the target range and the target maneuver status which is determined by a maneuver detector. A detailed simulation is conducted to test the validity of our tracking algorithm for encounter geometries under various conditions of maneuver.

  • Adaptive bang-bang control algorithm has been proposed by the authors to improve peak response reduction of building structures under unexpected large earthquake. At the previous research, control performance of the proposed algorithm was experimentally confirmed by using a I-DOF test structure. As an extended research, performance tests on a multi-DOF model structure have been conducted to prove the usefulness of the adaptive bang-bang control algorithm using a hydraulic AMD. It is confirmed that the proposed adaptive bang-bang algorithm is applicable to suppress the vibration of multi-DOF structures subject to severe external excitations.

  • A combined procedure for two-dimensional Delaunay mesh generation algorithm and an adaptive remeshing technique with higher-order compressible flow solver is presented. A pseudo-code procedure is described for the adaptive remeshing technique. The flux-difference splitting scheme with a modified multidimensional dissipation for high-speed compressible flow analysis on unstructured meshes is proposed. The scheme eliminates nonphysical flow solutions such as the spurious bump of the carbuncle phenomenon observed from the bow shock of the flow over a blunt body and the oscillation in the odd-even grid perturbation in a straight duct for the Quirk's odd-even decoupling test. The proposed scheme is further extended to achieve higher-order spatial and temporal solution accuracy. The performance of the combined procedure is evaluated on unstructured triangular meshes by solving several steady-state and transient high-speed compressible flow problems.

  • In this paper, we propose a noise estimation method for noise reduction. It is based on block and pixel-based noise estimation. We assume that an input image is contaminated by the additive white Gaussian noise. Thus, we use an adaptive Gaussian filter and estimate the amount of noise. It computes the standard deviation of each block and estimation is performed on pixel-based operation. The proposed algorithm divides an input image into blocks. This method calculates the standard deviation of each block and finds the minimum standard deviation block. The block in flat region shows well noise and filtering effects. Blocks which have similar standard deviation are selected as test blocks. These pixels are filtered by adaptive Gaussian filtering. Then, the amount of noise is calculated by the standard deviation of the differences between noisy and filtered blocks. Experimental results show that our proposed estimation method has better results than those by existing estimation methods.

  • A vehicle adaptive cruise control strategy based on human drivers' driving characteristics has been investigated. Human drivers driving characteristics have been analyzed using vehicle test data obtained from 125 participants. The control algorithm has been designed to incorporate the driving characteristics of the human drivers and to achieve natural vehicle behavior of the controlled vehicle that would reduce the workload of the human driver. Vehicle following characteristics of the cruise controlled vehicle have been compared to real-world driving radar sensor data of human drivers using a validated vehicle simulator. and compare nominal cruise control and adaptive cruise control.

  • The video transmission for real-time viewing over the Internet is a core operation for the multimedia services. However, its realization is very difficult because the Internet has two major problems, namely, very narrow endpoint-bandwidth and the network jitter. We already proposed a scalable video transmission method in [8] which used MPEG-4 video VM(Verification Model) 2.0[3] for very low bit rate coding and an adaptive temporal rate control of video objects to overcome the network jitter problem. In this paper, we present the improved adaptive temporal rate control scheme for the scalable transmission. Experimental results for three test video sequences show that the adaptive temporal rate control can transfer the video bitstream at source frame rate under variable network condition.
