  • An optical flow-based motion estimation algorithm is proposed for video coding. The algorithm uses block-matching motion estimation with an adaptive search region. The search region is computed from motion fields that are estimated based on the optical flow. The algorithm is based on the fact that true block-motion vectors have similar characteristics to optical flow vectors. Thereafter, the search region is computed using these optical flow vectors that include spatial relationships. In conventional block matching, the search region is fixed. In contrast, in the new method, the appropriate size and location of the search region are both decided by the proposed algorithm. The results obtained using test images show that the proposed algorithm can produce a significant improvement compared with previous block-matching algorithms.

  • An adaptive hexagon based search(AHBS) algorithm is proposed in this paper to perform block motion estimation in video coding. The AHBS evaluates the value of a given objective function starting from a diamond-shaped checking block and then continues its process using two hexagon-shaped checking blocks until the minimum value is found at the center of checking blocks. Also, the determination of which checking block is used depends on the position of minimum value occurred in previous searching step. The AHBS is compared with other fast searching algorithms including full search(FS). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides competitive performance with slightly reduced computational complexity.

  • In video coding, motion estimation is a process to estimate the pixel of the current frame from the reference frame, which affects directly the predictive quality and the encoding time. This paper is related to AHHS(Adaptive Hierarchical Hexagon Search) using spatio-temporal motion activity for fast motion estimation. The proposed method defines the spatio-temporal motion activity of the current macroblock using the motion vectors of its spatio-temporally adjacent macroblocks, and then conventional AHS(Adaptive Hexagon Search) is performed if the spatio-temporal motion activity is lower, otherwise, hierarchical hexagon search is performed on a multi-layered hierarchical space constructed by multiple sub-images with low frequency in wavelet transform. In the paper, based on computer simulation results for multiple video sequences with different motion characteristics, the performance of the proposed method was analysed and assessed in terms of the predictive quality and the computational time. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is both suitable for (quasi-) stationary and large motion searches. The proposed method could keep the merit of the adaptive hexagon search capable of fast estimating motion vectors and also adaptively reduce the local minima occurred in the video sequences with higher spatio-temporal motion activity.

  • This paper describes an implementation of adaptive stereo matching for DBM generation. The matching method of two stereo satellite images to find corresponding points used in this paper is area-based matching, which is usually used in the field of making DBM. Same window size and search area used as in the conventional matching methods and we propose adaptive stereo matching algorithm in this paper. We cluster three areas which are consist of mountainous areas, cultivated areas and cities, and rivers and lakes by using proposed linear feature extracting method. These classified areas are matched by adaptive window size and search area, but rivers and lakes is excluded in this experiment. The matching time is three times faster than conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a frame rate conversion algorithm using adaptive search-based motion estimation (ME). The proposed ME method uses recursive search, 3-step search, and single predicted search as candidates for search strategy. The best method among the three candidates is adaptively selected on a block basis according to the predicted motion type. The adaptation of the search method improves the accuracy of the estimated motion vectors while curbing the increase of computational load. To support the proposed ME method, an entire image is divided into three regions with different motion types. Experimental results show that the proposed FRC method achieves better image quality than existing algorithms in both subjective and objective measures.

  • This paper propose the fast motion estimation algorithm with adaptive search range adjustment using motion activities of temporal and spatial neighbor blocks. The existing fast motion estimation algorithms with adaptive search range adjustment use the maximum motion vector of all blocks in the reference frame. So these algorithms may not control a optimum search range for slow moving block in current frame. The proposed algorithm use the maximum motion vector of neighbor blocks in the reference frame to control a optimum search range for slow moving block. So the proposed algorithm can reduce computation time for motion estimation. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the number of search points about 15% more than Simple Dynamic Search Range(SDSR) algorithm while maintaining almost the same bit-rate and motion estimation error.

  • The real-time characteristic of the adaptive leaning control algorithms is validated based on the applied results of the hydraulic servo system that has very strong a non-linearity. The evolutionary strategy automatically adjusts the search regions with natural competition among many individuals. The error that is generated from the dynamic system is applied to the mutation equation. Competitive individuals are reduced with automatic adjustments of the search region in accordance with the error. In this paper, the individual parents and offspring can be reduced in order to apply evolutionary algorithms in real-time. The feasibility of the newly proposed algorithm was demonstrated through the real-time test.

  • In this paper, we propose an edge dependent interpolation (EDI) method based on adaptive search range. The proposed EDI method uses the vector matching to determine the edge direction, and the vector matching process is terminated when the previous sum of absolute difference (SAD) is smaller than the next one. The adaptive search range method enables the EDI algorithm to estimate edge direction more accurately and to reduce the computational complexity. The experimental results show that the proposed method produces better performance than conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we hve compare the performance of DAR(Dynamic Adaptive Routing) with that of FSR(Flooding Search Routing) to select an adequate routing protocol in circuit-switched networs. As a performance factor, we have considered call setup time, which is the key factor of performance evaluation in circuit switched networks. We have evaluated the performance of two methods in grid topology circuit-switched networks using a commn channel signaling scheme, as application examples. As results, FSR method shows better performance than DAR method under light traffic load, when the number of links by which call has passed increases, but DAR method represents better performance than FSR method under heavy traffic load or large networks because of redundant packets.
