Load balancing attempts to improve the performance of a distributed computing system by transferring some of the workload of a congested site to others. A load balancing scheme that supports both the source-initiated and the server- initiated load balancing is proposed in this paper. It can model both the m/m/1 queue(no load balancing) and the m/m/n queue(perfect load balancing) as the extreme State variables are replicated into every site, and copy consistency constraints are relaxed more weakly. We propose weak copy consistency constraints which correlate the outdated state information to that of the current state. We also derive sufficient conditions under which each scheduler can guarantee the load balancing without communication Using this model, the problem of load balancing is converted to that of maintaining the consistency of states and communication overhead becomes less than that of the bidding algorithm. The scheme is simulated by event tracing, compared to the two extreme cases and the bidding algorithm. The results show that the mean response time and the number of messages are reduced by 0-35% and 40-100% respectively, compared with the bidding algorithm. Finally the effects of some system parameters are described.

Efficient bandwidth management is necessary in order to provide high quality service to users in a multimedia wireless/mobile network. In this paper, I propose an on-line load balancing algorithm with preemption. This technique is able to balance the traffic load among cells accommodating heterogeneous multimedia services while ensuring efficient bandwidth utilization. The most important features of my algorithm are its adaptability, flexibility and responsiveness to current network conditions. In addition, my online scheme to control bandwidth adaptively is a cell-oriented approach. This approach has low complexity making it practical for real cellular networks. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of my algorithm.
Cluster system provides attractive scalability in terms of compution power and memory size. With the advances in high speed computer network technology, cluster systems are becoming increasingly competitive compared to expensive MPPs (massively parallel processors). Load balancing is very important issue since an inappropriate scheduling of tasks cannot exploit the true potential of the system and can offset the gain from parallelization. In parallel processing program, it is difficult to predict the load of each task before running the program. Furthermore, tasks are interdependent each other in many ways. The dynamic load balancing algorithm, which evaluates each processor's load in runtime, partitions each task into the appropriate granularity and assigns them to processors in proportion to their performance in cluster systems. However, if the communication cost between processing nodes is expensive, it is not efficient for all nodes to attend load balancing process. In this paper, we restrict a processor that attend load balancing by the communication cost and the deviation of its load from the average. We simulate various models of the cluster system with parameters such as communication cost, node number, and range of workload value to compare existing load balancing methods with the proposed dynamic algorithms.
The transcoding is a method which converts a multimedia stream to an adaptive format, such as frame rate and resolution, that can be played in the mobile devices. Due to the heavy consumption of CPU power for transcoding, the server in charge cannot supply all streams requested from clients if it is already occupied by several streams. The load balancing among proxies is a common approach for solving such problem. In addition to collaborative works for load balancing, the mobility must be taken into account in the mobile environments. Thus, the wired-network based algorithm is not suitable for the streams service in the mobile environments. In this paper, we propose an alternative scheme for cooperative proxy architecture that considers the case in which mobile devices are moving over other zones.
New multimedia services over the cellular/WLAN overlay networks require different Quality of Service (QoS). In the cellular/WLAN overlay structure, the main issue of load balancing is to balance the available bandwidth among different networks. In this paper, we propose a new online network management scheme. Our proposed scheme is designed to improve bandwidth utilization by balancing the traffic load between the cellular network and WLANs. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of our proposed framework to strike the appropriate performance balance between contradictory QoS requirements under widely varying diverse traffic loads.

In this paper we propose a load balancing scheme for heterogeneous multiple AS's (Application Server) in IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) based network. In IMS network, to perform load balancing among multiple ASs with different registration pattern, different weight value should be set for each AS. In previous systems, there exists an inconvenience that the weight value should be set manually by the operator after monitoring the result. In this paper we propose a method to calculate optimal weight in automatic manner and to perform load balancing simultaneously. We also propose a simplified algorithm to reduce calculation in specific situation and present a way to apply our proposed scheme in adaptive manner according to the situation. Through simulation result, we verify that our proposing scheme outperforms previous schemes in load balancing and adjusts well to the change of the system in automatic manner with fast convergence.

For very large multimedia traffic to be supported successfully in wireless network environment, it is necessary to provide Quality-of-Service(QoS) guarantees between mobile hosts(clients). In order to guarantee the Qos, we have to keep the call blocking probability below target value during handoff session. However, the QoS negotiated between the client and the network may not be guaranteed due to lack of available channels for traffic in the new cell, since mobile clients should be able to continue their on-going sessions. In this paper we propose a efficient load-balancing algorithm based on the adaptive bandwidth reservation scheme for enlarging available channels in a cell. We design a new method to predict the mobility of clients using MPT(mobility profile table). This method is then used to reserve a part of bandwidths for handoff calls to its adjacent cells and this reserved bandwidth can be used for handoff call prior to new connection requests. If the number of free channels is also under a low threshold value, our scheme use a load-balancing algorithm with a adaptive bandwidth reservation. In order to evaluate the performance of our algorithm, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of new calls and dropping probability of handoff calls, and compare with other existing schemes.
With the steady growth of mobile technology and applications, demand for more storage in mobile devices has also increased. A lightweight block-level protocol, Internet Advanced Technology Attachment (iATA), has been developed to deliver a cost-effective storage network solution for mobile devices to obtain more storage. This paper seeks to contribute to designing and implementing Load Balancing (LB), Network Monitoring (NM) and Write Replication (WR) modules to improve the protocol's scalability and data availability. LB and NM modules are invoked to collect system resources states and current network status at each associate node (server machine). A dynamic weight factor is calculated based on the collected information and sent to a referral server. The referral server is responsible to analyze and allocate the most ideal node with the least weight to serve the client. With this approach, the client can avoid connecting to a heavily loaded node that may cause delays in subsequent in-band I/O operations. Write replication is applied to the remaining nodes through a WR module by utilizing the Unison file synchronization program. A client initially connected to node IP A for write operations will have no hindrances in executing the relevant read operations at node IP B in new connections. In the worst case scenario of a node crashing, data remain recoverable from other functioning nodes. We have conducted several benchmark tests and our results are evaluated and verified in a later section.
Sort-last parallel rendering using a cluster of GPUs has been widely used as an efficient method for visualizing large- scale volume datasets. The performance of this method is constrained by load balancing when data parallelism is included. In previous works static partitioning could lead to self-balance when only task level parallelism is included. In this paper, we present a load balancing scheme that adapts to the characteristic of volume dataset when data parallelism is also employed. We effectively combine the hierarchical data structures (octree and BSP tree) in order to skip empty regions and distribute workload to corresponding rendering nodes. Moreover, we also exploit a 3D clustering method to determine visibility order and save the AGP bandwidths on each rendering node. Experimental results show that our scheme can achieve significant performance gains compared with traditional static load distribution schemes.

As network adaptive streaming technology becomes increasingly common, transport protocol also becomes important in guaranteeing the quality of multimedia streaming. At the same time, because of the appearance of high-quality video such as Ultra High Definition (UHD), preventing buffering as well as preserving high quality while deploying a streaming service becomes important. The Internet Engineering Task Force recently published Multipath TCP (MPTCP). MPTCP improves the maximum transmission rate by simultaneously transmitting data over different paths with multiple TCP subflows. However, MPTCP cannot preserve high quality, because the MPTCP subflows slowly increase the transmission rate, and upon detecting a packet loss, drastically halve the transmission rate. In this paper, we propose a new multipath congestion control scheme for high-quality multimedia streaming. The proposed scheme preserves high quality of video by adaptively adjusting the increasing parameter of subflows according to the network status. The proposed scheme also increases network efficiency by providing load balancing and stability, and by supporting fairness with single-flow congestion control schemes.
