  • Very few studies have been reported on upper extremity replantation following traumatic amputation. This case study aimed to report the progress of a patient treated with complex Korean medicine for 1 year after elbow replantation. The patient mainly complained of forearm sensory loss, muscle weakness, and hand pain after undergoing upper limb amputation and emergency replantation. He was hospitalized for approximately 50 days and then received outpatient treatment for approximately 10 months, followed by electroacupuncture, moxibustion, Chuna, herbal medicine, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The muscle strength of the wrist joint improved to good (flexion) and fair (extension), and the forearm sensation was partially recovered approximately 10 months after the onset. To our knowledge, this is the first case report on replantation rehabilitation in Korean medicine, and it suggests that complex Korean medicine treatment might be beneficial for patients undergoing replantation after upper extremity amputation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the needling depth of five-phase acupoints and discuss the association with the depth of meridian qi. Methods : DongUiBoGam was used to determine the depth of five-phase acupoints. The depth of needling at 60 five-phase acupoints was compared between well, spring, stream, river, and sea acupoints. Results : The proximal part of the extremities had deeper needling depth than the distal part of the extremities. The targeted deqi sensation can be related to the needling depth. Conclusions : The depth of the meridian qi is related to the distinct patterns of needling depth of five-phase acupoints.

  • The degenerative spinal cord disease cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), and cervical myelopathy caused by trauma, can result in debilitating symptoms affecting quality of life. This study used acupotomy and other Korean medicine treatments (acupuncture, herbal medicine, and physical therapy) to improve the symptoms of CSM and cervical myelopathy. The visual analog scale, the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association scale (mJOA scale), the Nurick grading system, and the American Spinal Injury Association impairment scale were used as the evaluation criteria to determine the effectiveness of treatment. The functional status of both patients improved from mild to moderate, with improved gait, local sensation, and level of pain. The degree of spinal cord injury remained the same. The findings of this study suggest that combined Korean medicine treatments including acupotomy may be helpful in the treatment of CSM and cervical myelopathy.

  • The acupuncture procedures in Hwangjenaekyung (黃帝內經) was different to modern ones in many aspects. Especially, the role of pulse diagnosis in acupuncture was totally different and the pulse diagnosis was essential part in acupuncture therapy in Hwangjenaekyung era. We found four noteworthy features on the pulse diagnosis before and after acupuncture in Hwangjenaekyung : (1) Pulse diagnosis was a mandatory process in acupuncture (2) Doctors who used pulse diagnosis in 12 meridians (十二經脈遍診脈法), pulse diagnosis in 9 points of 3 body parts (三部九候脈法), and comparative pulse diagnosis between radial artery and carotid artery (人迎寸口對比脈法) followed the former rule ((1)). (3) The major pulse features to detect before and after acupuncture were conversion between the vacuous pulse (虛脈) and the replete pulse (實脈), and conversion between slippery pulse (滑脈) and rough pulse (澁脈). (4) Deukki (得氣, Deqi) was synonym of Kiji (氣至), and it referred to the changes of arterial pulse, not the sensation followed by acupuncture manipulation.
