  • The researcher categorized the acupuncture methods mentioned in DongUiBoGam according to the form, and examined how to select and use the acupuncture points explained in the Acupuncture/Moxibustion prescription. By comparing the original text to the Acupuncture/Moxibustion prescriptions, it was established that the various acupuncture points in these Acupuncture/Moxibustion prescriptions all had individual meaning. Also, it showed that DongUiBoGam didn't indicate a particular acupuncture point but allowed a possibility for selection according to the patient's condition and the skill of the practitioner.

  • Objectives : Acupoints are divided into three categories: classical acupoints, extra-acupoints, and Ashi points. The aim of this study was to understand the meaning and features of Ashi points. Methods : We examined the original meaning of Ashi points from the classical medical texts, including the Beijiqianjinyaofang, the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies, and the Huangdi Neijing, the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. Results : First, the Ashi method is to locate the points for the acupuncture and moxibustion based on the patients' reactions mainly manifested by sensations of comfort and pain, which can help identify not only Ashi points but also classical and extra-acupoints. Thus, Ashi points may or may not match to classical or extra-acupoints, and we propose that Ashi points should not be classified mutually exclusive to classical or extra-acupoints. Second, there are several similarities between Ashi points and myofascial trigger points. They are located by palpation and have no fixed anatomical positions. Patients experience painful but pleasant feeling when Ashi and myofascial trigger points are pressed, and stimulation of these points have treatment effects. Conclusions : We suggest that Ashi method be used to identify the acupoints based on how patients react when these points are pressed. Ashi points may or may not correspond to classical or extra-acupoints, and share traits with myofascial trigger points.

  • Objective: To review the theoretic basis of the Sa-Ahm 5 Element acupuncture devised about 360 years ago, papers and books were researched. Methods: Total of 59 books and papers ranging from ancient Huang Di nei jing to modern Bio Medical Acupuncture for Pain Management were researched to study the basic theory of it in relation to the 5 Shu points, Results: Gao-mu in Chinese Ming dynasty, for the 1st time, had used 5 Shu points based on creation cycle as tonification and sedation treatment respectively and named it as 'tonification and sedation treatment of self meridian' but since then, this method, without special reasons, has been rarely used until Sa-Ahm's new doctrine that include the concept of destruction cycle was asserted. Conclusions: Sa-Ahm 5 Element acupuncture is a method which uses 5 Shu points from the viewpoints of simultaneous tonification and sedation methods which are based on promotion and control cycles. Though it is nowadays mostly-used method in accordance with practitioner's points, it needs to be set guidelines by which to effectively practice Sa-Ahm acupuncture.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of high intensity, high frequency microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation(MENS) of auricular and somatic acupuncture points and low intensity, low frequency microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation(MENS) of auricular and somatic acupuncture points on experimental pressure threshold at the elbow according to the time. Fifty healthy adults, aged 19 to 26 years, were assigned randomly to one of five groups: 1) the high intensity, high frequency somatic group(n=10) received MENS to somatic acupuncture points, 2) the high intensity, high frequency auricular group(n=10) received MENS to auricular acupuncture points, 3) the low intensity, low frequency somatic group(n=10) received MENS to somatic acupuncture points, 4) the low intensity, low frequency somatic group(n=10) receive MENS to somatic acupuncture points, and 5) the placebo group(n=10) received placebo treatment and served as controls. Pressure threshold was measured before, after, 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. Pressure threshold has increased significantly(p<.05) in the high intensity, high frequency auricular group following treatment after 5 minutes, with no statistically significant differences in pressure threshold change scores among five groups, Only the high intensity, high frequency auricular group demonstrated statistically significant change score in pressure threshold following treatment after, 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes after compared to the placebo group. The results indicated that MENS applied to the high intensity, high frequency auricular group increases pressure threshold.

  • This study was carried to identify whether acupuncture at several meridian points can affect the human anesthesia or not using the EEG mapping. We observe the change in the brain wave patterns obtained by electroencephalogram after acupuncture. 1. It is concluded that the pattern of resting computerized EEG map in intact human is normal and acupunctuation at determined meridian points induced lesser narrow field of alpha activity, more extensive field of ${\delta}$, ${\theta}$ activity, father resulted in marked shift to cerebrofrontal dominance in field of ${\delta}$, ${\theta}$ activity by t-SPM. 2. It seems likely that acupunctuation at experimental meridian points acts on slight anesthesia or hypnosis.

  • Objectives : The lower sea points of the six bowels is one of the most useful acupuncture prescription in the treatment for diseases related with six organs. There have been many studies on the effects of each acupoint, but it is difficult to find a systemic review about the whole of it. The purpose of this study is to review the lower sea points of the six bowels and investigate the background of the induction of that. Materials and Methods : 1. The authors performed systemic review about the lower sea points of the six bowels using related-literatures such as Neijing and Nanjing. 2. We investigated the background of the induction and the necessity through the meaning of the character Hop (合). We thought the clinical usefulness of that. Results and Conclusions : The lower sea points of the six bowels had been made for the supplement of the sea point of the five transport points and it might be possible to substitute the sea point of the five transport points with the lower sea points of the six bowels owing to the clinical usefulness of the lower sea points of the six bowels.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to 1. measure the skin resistance of jeong-acupuncture points using compound electrode, and 2. develop a database of skin resistance based on age and gender. Methods : The skin resistance of jeong-acupuncture points on the hands and feet of 191 healthy volunteers was measured using a specially designed compound electrode. A constant current of $5{\mu\textrm{A}}$ was applied to the measurement points and the skin resistance was obtained using amplifier, A/D converter and Acknowledge software program, Results : 1. ANOVA statistical analysis showed no significant differences between jeong-acupuncture points on hands and feet. 2. Paired samples t-test showed no significant differences between Yin-Yang meridian points, 3. When the data were sorted by gender, factor analysis showed statistically significant differences between male and female groups in all measured points except for left foot. 4. Based on the factor analysis, a significant relationship between the skin resistance and age was found in feet. However, no such relationship was found in hands. Conclusions : There are differences in skin resistance according to sex and age, Further clinical research is necessary using compound electrode method.
