Artificial intelligence technology sheds light on new ways of innovating acupuncture research. As acupoint selection is specific to target diseases, each acupoint is generally believed to have a specific indication. However, the specificity of acupoint selection may be not always same with the specificity of acupoint indication. In this review, we propose that the specificity of acupoint indication can be inferred from clinical data using reverse inference. Using forward inference, the prescribed acupoints for each disease can be quantified for the specificity of acupoint selection. Using reverse inference, targeted diseases for each acupoint can be quantified for the specificity of acupoint indication. It is noteworthy that the selection of an acupoint for a particular disease does not imply the acupoint has specific indications for that disease. Electronic medical record includes various symptoms and chosen acupoint combinations. Data mining approach can be useful to reveal the complex relationships between diseases and acupoints from clinical data. Combining the clinical information and the bodily sensation map, the spatial patterns of acupoint indication can be further estimated. Interoperable medical data should be collected for medical knowledge discovery and clinical decision support system. In the era of artificial intelligence, machine learning can reveal the associations between diseases and prescribed acupoints from large scale clinical data warehouse.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the Effect of Acupuncture Stimulation of Sohae(H3) and Sobu(H8) Acupoint on Skin Temperature of Sochung Acupint(H9, the end acupoint of Heart Meridian). Sohae and Sobu acupoint has a property of water and fire in the Five agents on Heart Meridian. Methods : Subjects were four healthy oriental medical students volunteers(male, mean age-28). One group(two subjects) received acupuncture on Sohae acupoint(H3) and the other group(two subjects) on Sobu acupoint(H8) while resting. Skin temperature was measured on Sochung acupoint(H9) before, during, and after acupunture stimulation. Each test took 15minutes. The initial 5minutes were definded as BAS(Before Acupuncture Stimulation) period, the following 5minutes as DAS(During Acupuncture Stimulation) period, the last 5minutes as AAS(After Acupuncture Stimulation) period. This test was performed twice in order to increase the statistical authenticity. Results : Our result indicates that acupuncrue stimulation of Sohae acupoint(H3) decreased and Sobu acupoint(H8) increased skin temperature on Sochung acupoint(H9) in the DAS period. The changes remained throughout the AAS period. Our conculusion are that stimulaton of the Water and Fire property-acupoint(H3, H8) on Heart changes the skin temperature on Sochung acupoint on the same Heart Meridian. However this study has no authenticity because it had no regard for many factors effecting on the result and the result of the study was the very reverse of our expectation.
Objectives : The acupoint-meridian relationship of an acupoint is one of important features of the acupoint. It has also shown evolutionary development over the history of medicine. This study analyzed the prototype kind of information on acupoint-meridian relationships in the A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(the Classic) of 2c BCE. Methods : The acupoint-meridian relationship of all the acupoints listed in the Classic was counted and reviewed in comparison with the information in the contemporary standard texts. Results : In comparison with the contemporary standard of 361 meridian points, the Classic listed 349(97%) acupoints. Of contemporary standard 361 points, 287(81%) acupoints still maintain the same acupoint-meridian relationship as in the Classic. Conclusions : Acupoint-meridian relationship in the Classic has largely been maintained throughout the history and still comprises a major proportion of the contemporary body of knowledge on acupoint-meridian relationship.
Objective : The objective of this study is to enlarge the range of treating which understanding taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can be applied to by inspecting and analyzing documentary records about taech'u acupoint(GVl4). One is a position in which a patient lies on his/her face. The other is a position in which a patient sits up straight with his/her head bent. 3. The depth of acupuncturing can be varied from 3 puns to 2 chons. 4. The amount of moxa can be varied from 3 jangs to 60 jangs. 5. To treat throush taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can lower fever, relieve a state of oversensitiveness, and let vitality flown. Conclusions : The range of treating through taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can be chronic wasting diseases, neuropsychotic diseases, feverish diseases, respiratory diseases, and diseases which can be around taech'u acupoint(GVl4).
Objectives : The objective of this study was to examine the acupoint location of Sameumgyo (SP6) from classic literatures. Methods : A review of SP6 acupoint location on 13 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion was performed. Results : Differences of SP6 acupoint location were found by classics of acupuncture and moxibustion. 9 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion said the acupoint of SP6 was located on 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus, however acupoint location of SP6 was described on 8 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus by 4 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion. Conclusions : Through a classic literature review, it was possible for the explanation that the location of SP6 was 8 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus, but it was not intended to overturn the theory of 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus regarding location of SP6. This study may be the starting point for future experimental or clinical studies for exploring new acupoint, and is expected to follow up.
In this paper, we studied Dongssi' acupuncture therapy via the consideration of development process of Oriental medicine in history. We investigated the distribution chart and naming of Dongssi' acupuncture point in human body, artificial selection principle of Dongssi' acupuncture point to therapy (選穴原則) on the various diseases, the therapy of pyo-bon (標本理論) and the therapy of Geun-Gyeal (根結理論) and compared GeoZa-principle (巨刺法) and MuZa-principle (繆刺法) with artificial selection principle of Dongssi' acupuncture point. And we also studied the acupuncture therapy of DongGi (動氣鍼法), DoMa (倒馬鍼法) and SaeIn (索引鍼法), which is the unique principle in Dongssi' acupuncture theraphy, to consider with the other Oriental medicine theory which is the theory of ZangSang (臟象學說) and BiWi (脾胃學說) etc. Our desire in this study is the giving aid to treatment diseases with the acupuncture therapy in Oriental medicine.
Objectives : Accurate location of acupoints is a prerequisite for both practice and research into acupoint specificity. Given that accurate location of acupoints is one of the most important issues in meridianology education, this study aimed at evaluating if the elastic ruler method for locating acupoints is suitable for meridianology practice class. Methods : Fifty-six students who took meridianology practice class participated in the experiment. Firstly, they were asked to locate PC6, CV12 and ST36 without any assisting tools and the distance between standard acupoint and their acupoint location was measured. Secondly, they were again asked to locate the same points this time with an elastic ruler. Then the first and second measurements were compared using a paired t-test. Results : Analysis of the results found using an elastic ruler significantly improved the difference between the student's acupoint location and the standard acupoint: there was a significant difference between 1st and 2nd measurements for PC6 (1.87${\pm}$0.29mm vs. 1.28${\pm}$0.19mm, P=0.037) and for ST36 (2.70${\pm}$0.22mm vs. 1.38${\pm}$0.15mm, P<0.0001). Conclusions : Using an elastic ruler as an assisting tool for locating acupoints in meridianology practice class should be considered for improving accuracy in acupoint location.

Objectives: The warm needling technique is a method which combines the effects of acupuncture with those of moxibustion. The purpose of this study was to find the stimulus effects of a high frequency warm needling device when stimulating acupoint $LI_4$ on the carrageenan-induced arthritis. Methods: This study was to observe the effects to edema reaction, WBF(weight bearing force), NO concentration, nNOS expression after the electro high frequency stimulus of high frequency warm needling device on LI4 with insulated acupuncture needle. Results: The effect of the high frequency warm needling device is to rise up the temperature in proportion to the current intensity. After stimulating on the acupoint $LI_4$ of the carrageenan-induced arthritis in rats with the high frequency warm needling device, it significantly reduced edema in the rat's foot. In addition, WBF, NO concentration of spinal cord (nmol/mg), and nNOS relative expression were reduced. Conclusions: The above results support the idea that stimulus by the high frequency warm needling device on $LI_4$ produces a potent analgesic effect in the arthritis pain model of the rat. Moreover, stimulus by the high frequency warm needling device modulates endogenous NO through the suppression of nNOS protein expression.
