This paper presents a systematic method measuring a velocity disturbance to design the robust seek loop system of optical disk drives. The velocity disturbance caused by the rotation of a disk has a greater influence on the performance of the seek control loop as the rotational speed increases. Thus, it needs to measure the extent of the velocity disturbance and design the seek control loop based on the measured data. The measurement method of the velocity disturbance is a real-time . method using a measurable velocity and a velocity controller output and is a robust method considering actuator uncertainties. The loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to compensate for the actuator uncertainties. The proposed method is implemented by an experimental digital system and is evaluated through an experiment.
As track density increases, the effects of nonlinearity in pivot bearing of hard disk drive on the servo performance are becoming more important in considering the range of inertia force and the input torque during settling and tracking mode. Recently, an increasing attention is given to more precise experimental observations and modelings of pivot nonlinearity for achieving higher performance of servo control. In this paper, we propose a new model that shows an improved prediction of the pivot nonlinearity than existing preload-plus-two-slope model at matching simulations and experimental results in both time and frequency domains. Experimental measurements are carried out to validate and identify the specific nonlinearity presents in the pivot bearing when its in fine motion. Using the experimental results new model along with the existing one are characterized and compared for relevancies.
A Precise actuator in the pick-up of a DVDR/P(Digital Video Disk Recorder/Player) is required to control position accurately. Therefore, in order to develop a reliable actuator, dynamic characteristics of each part in an actuator should be examined closely. This paper presents systematic design process of an actuator using various analysis methods to confirm fundamental capability and solve performance problems related to dynamic characteristics of an actuator beforehand. Particularly, sensitivity analysis is presented through the program using mass moment of inertia and general equations of rigid body. Through the result of sensitivity analysis, important inferiority causes of actuator are selected and reduced. In the end, dynamic characteristics of manufactured actuators are improved considerably.
Ultra small optical drive or PCMCIA type needs a focusing actuator because or applying Blue Laser and enhancing compatibility according to disk physical specification. Based on this need, this paper presents a novel focusing actuator adapted for ultra small optical drive of PCMCIA type. The focusing actuator using Lorenz force generated consists of coil, magnets and plate springs of pivoting. The design issues of the focusing actuator are the flexibility to focus direction, the rigidity to track direction and the higher natural mode of the moving part. For settling these Issues, this paper present mechanical design, computer simulations and test results of the realized focusing actuator. Finally, suitability and usefulness of the focusing actuator was demonstrated by the comparison of simulations and test results in a view of the possibility adapted for ultra small optical drive.
We propose a novel adaptive feed forward controller (AFC) design method for rejecting the effect of micro actuator resonance in the design of dual-stage actuator servo systems for disk drives. Microactuator's resonance is one of important issues in dual-stage actuator servo, which varies up to ${\pm}10%$ per product and even during operation. We derive an adaptive algorithm for the proposed AFC design, which turns out to be identical to the delayed-x LMS algorithm which is a special form of the filtered-x LMS algorithm. In the algorithm, coefficients of the AFC are adapted by the residuals of constrained structure defined in such a way that the coefficients become time invariant. Contrary to the conventional AFC, it considers the phase delay of closed-loop transfer function at resonance frequency for system stability. We also apply an adaptive algorithm with frequency tracking capability. The frequency tracking algorithm is induced by the orthogonality of AFC coefficients. Computer simulations are carried out to demonstrate effect of the proposed AFCs.
A number of dust particles are intruded into ODD(Optical disk drive) due to the flow caused by disk rotation and are adhered to a lens or disk surface. The space between the disk and the lens is being reduced. Someone indicates the problems of this drive that are relatively small data storing capacity and slow access time. In recent, the problems of this optical disk drive mentioned above are being solved by adding the speed of the disk's revolution, making the actuator high-speed or light, and making the beam spot size smaller than making the space narrow between disk and lens. These particle contamination affects seriously RF Signal, readout signal in an ODD. Especially, the affected parts by a particle contamination in an ODD's readout signal are objective lens and media.
This paper proposes a small VCM (Voice coil motor) type actuator using curved suspensions for auto-focusing and zoom motions for mobile information devices. 1'he proposed focusing actuator adopts a nontraditional type of suspension using curved beams in order to extend output displacement within small height restriction. The curved beam is similar to the leaf spring type which is usually used in optical disk drives. In addition, three different materials are considered for the curved suspension model, and Aluminum shows the best dynamic characteristics. The proposed zoom actuator does not use a suspension supporting bobbin but a moving rail and a sloper mechanism by generating rotational force at lens holder. The sensitivity of design parameters on output performance is studied using ANSYS (3D FEM tool). Experiments using a prototype of the proposed actuator model verified the analytical prediction and performance.
The suspension of the optical pickup actuator is damped by the presence of silicone rubber damper bond at its termination. In spite of the presence of it, the actuator still exhibits a strong mechanical resonance which affects its settling time and vibrational characteristics. This resonance can cause errors in reading information from the disk, particularly in high speed CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Ferrofluids are stable colloidal suspensions of sub-micron sized magnetic particles in a carrier liquid. In the actuator design, ferrofluid is applied to the surface of the magnets until the quantity is sufficient to maintain intimate contact with the bobbin/carrier assembly. The fluid is retained in the magnetic field and its viscosity provides the desired mechanical damping to the moving assembly, improving the actuators settling time and vibrational characteristics. Access time is also improved, particularly on warped or eccentric discs.
