Purpose: To investigate the subjective health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Haenyo. Methods: Subjects were 100 elderly Haenyo in Jeju island who belonged to a fishing-village society. Main variables were activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental ADL (IADL), the HRQoL, subjective health, and depression. Subjective health and differences of HRQoL by variables were analyzed by t-test or ANOVA using IBM SPSS Statistics 23. Hierarchical multiple regression was executed to examine the effects of the major factors on the quality of life. Results: The mean age was 69.9 years, the mean period for diving career was 51.5 years, and work hours per month were 37.8. Comorbidity of diseases was 2.74, and the common health problems were osteoporosis and headache/dizziness. HRQoL was significantly different by age (F=4.52, p=.013), education (F=6.10, p=.003), muljil work years (F=3.93, p=.050), depression (t=-3.04, p=.030), subjective health state (F=30.62, p<.01), and degenerative arthritis (F=-2.38, p=.019). In the final model by hierarchical multiple regression, ADL/IADL (${\beta}=.41$, p<.001), depression (${\beta}=-.29$, p<.001), and subjective health (${\beta}=.43{\sim}.51$, p<.001) were significant and explained 63.5% of the total variance of HRQoL. Conclusion: Haenyo have specific health problems different from those of elderly women in general. ADL/IADL, depression and subjective health affected their HRQoL. It is clear that Haenyos' health problems need further study to improve their health.
Purpose: To identify the effect of breathing training on the physical function and psychological problems in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: In total, 26 patients with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group, who underwent breathing training and neurodevelopmental treatment, and the control group, who underwent neurodevelopmental treatment (13 patients per group). Physical function was evaluated using the balance and Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Psychological problems were assessed using the Depression. Balance was measured using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). ADLs were measured using the Modified Barthel Index (MBI). Depression was measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The BBS, MBI, and BDI were recorded before and after the 4-week treatment. Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the experimental and control group showed significant difference for BBS, MBI and BDI after the experiment (p<0.05). In comparison between two groups, the experimental group showed more significant difference in BBS, MBI and BDI than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that breathing training was effective improvement physical function, and psychological problems in patients with chronic stroke.

Purpose: It was necessary for developing a neonatal classification system based on nursing needs and direct care time. This study was, thus, aimed at identifying nursing activities and measuring the standard nursing practice time for developing a neonatal patient classification system in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Methods: The study was taken place in 8 general hospitals located in Seoul and Kyungi province, South Korea from Dec, 2009 to Jan, 2010. By using 'the modified Workload Management System for critical care Nurses' (WMSN), nursing categories, activities, standard time, and task frequencies were measured with direct observation. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. Results: Neonatal nursing activities were categorized into 8 areas: vital signs (manual), monitoring, activity of daily living (ADL), feeding, medication, treatment and procedure, respiratory therapy, and education-emotional support. The most frequent and time-consuming area was an ADL, unlike that of adult patients. Conclusion: The findings of the study provide a foundation for developing a neonatal patient classification system in NICU. Further research is warranted to verify the reliability and validity of the instrument.

Purpose: This study was performed to identify the association between family support, activities of daily living (ADL) and depression among hospitalized older patients with chronic diseases. Methods: This study subjects were 100 elderly patients with chronic diseases including chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus and et al. in a general hospital. The collected data were patient characteristics, family support, ADL, and depression by structured questionnaire and medical chart review. The used statistical analyses were t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlational analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean scores of family support, ADL and depression were $49.95{\pm}8.68$, $8.65{\pm}2.65$, $6.66{\pm}3.78$, respectively. The prevalence rate of depression was 64.0%. In simple analysis, the statistically significant associated factors with depression were age, spouse, economic status, social activity, subjective health status, and number of pain. Depression had statistically a significant positive correlation with ADL and a negative correlation with family support. The final result of hierarchial multiple regression analysis (Model 3), the factors related to depression were family support (b=-.135, p<.001), subjective health status (b=2.510, p=.001). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and apply the program for controlling the depression of elderly patients with health education, reinforcement of supportive systems in hospital. And, further multidisciplinary studies should be done.
Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the level of cognitive and physical function by the level of social disengagement in institutions and community dwelling elderly. Method: The study subjects were 209 people whose age ranged from 65 to 94. The data were surveyed with social disengagement index, MMSE-K, and ADL, and analysed by SPSS 11.0 using frequency, t-test, ANCOVA and ANOVA. Results: 1) The level of social disengagement was 1.67 in institution and 3.25 in community elderly, and showed statistically significant difference (F=41.07, p<.001). 2) There were statistically significant difference in MMSE-K (F=15.51, p<.000), and activity of daily living (F=9.65, p=.002) between two residence after control the age, gender, religion, allowance and number of children. 3) There were statistically significant difference in MMSE-K (F=6.55, p=.002) by social disengagement in community dwelling elderly. Conclusions: Programs for successful aging to reduce social disengagement should be developed that stimulate social activities and then improve cognitive function for the elderly. For these, establishing social policies in nation and local government is needed. Especially, these policies should be conducted among the elderly with low-income living in institutions.

This study assessed the risk and prevalence of anorexia as well as associated factors among home-dwelling elderly adults. The subjects were 419 elderly men (116) and women (303) aged 65 years and older ($76{\pm}5.6yr$) living in Korea. Data were collected by personal interviews using questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation. The prevalence of anorexia was 35.1% among participants. Male elders (74.1%) had higher proportions of anorexia than female elders (20.1%) (P<0.001). Significant differences in the appetite were observed according to type of disease, depression, and activities of daily living (ADL) index. In the poor appetite group, central nervous system diseases were the primary illness in male elders (P<0.01), whereas endocrine diseases were the primary illness in female elders (P<0.01). Elders with good appetites had less symptoms of depression (P<0.001) and greater independence in ADL (P<0.001). These results explored the high prevalence of anorexia in geriatric populations in Korea and its impact on elderly nutritional status and health. Further research should be performed to identify the causes of anorexia and establish an intervention protocol allowing the early diagnosis of anorexia.

The present paper examined the stress and ADL (activities of daily living) index in relation to the characteristics of the elderly in nursing homes. For this study, questionnaires were given to 110 seniors in the N-district of Seoul, and S-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon Province from May 1 to September 30, 2013. For data analysis, t-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSSWIN18.0 program. The analysis of actual proof was made at a significance level of 5 percent. The findings from the analyses were as follows: first, the relocation syndrome into nursing homes has a positive correlation with the stress of deficient family visits in the category of daily stresses; second, depression has a positive correlation with the stresses of deficient private time and space and deficient family visits in the category of daily stresses; third, weight control has a positive correlation only with the stress of deficient private time and space in the category of daily stresses, whereas a nutrition deficiency has positive correlation with the stress of deficient family visits in the category of daily stresses. These findings may serve as ground source data for establishing policies regarding the stresses in relation to the characteristics and ADL index of the elderly in nursing homes.
This study aims to understand the effects of a Computer - based Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy(CBCRT) evidence based on mild dementia patients' ability to activities daily living(ADL), cognitive function and measure of occupational performance and to suggest basic data for a cognitive rehabilitation therapy for dementia patients. Method : A CBCRT was applied two times a week for 5 weeks to 14 mild dementia patients who visited Yongin Center for Managing Dementia in Gyeongi-do between February and August 2009. Based on frame of reference for Visual-Perception a CBCRT was applied at home. Moreover, a one group pretest-post test design was, which is a quasi-experiment and research, also applied in order to verify the effects of the rehabilitation therapy on the subjects' ability to ADL, cognitive function and occupational performance skills. Results: A significant effect was confirmed (p<.05) from the CBCRT which Assessment of Motor and Process Skills(AMPS) processing skills and cognitive function and occupational performance skills. Neither was found any significant effect in improving motor skills from AMPS. Conclusion: It seems that a CBCRT based on evidence and has an effect on the improvement of the ability to ADL and cognitive function of mild dementia patients living in a community. The present author hopes that, in the future, more cognitive rehabilitation programs will be developed to improve the functions of mild dementia patients living in a community.
Purpose: This study was conducted to test criterion-related validity of the Critical Patients' Severity Classification System (CPSCS) developed by the Hospital Nurses' Association by examining relationships with brain injury severity measured by Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), recovery state measured by Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), and days of stay in ICU of brain injury patients. Methods: Prospective correlational research design was adopted by including 194 brain injury patients admitted to ICU of one university hospital. Results: The score of CPSCS appeared to significantly discriminate the severity of brain injury. Among nursing activities in CPSCS, Respiratory therapy, IV Infusion and Medication, Monitoring, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Treatment and Procedure were significant to discriminate the severity of brain injury. Respiratory therapy, Vital Signs, and Monitoring appeared to significantly discriminate the recovery states of 1- and 3-months. Nursing activities significantly contributed to predict the days of ICU stay were Respiratory therapy, ADL, and Teaching and Emotional Support. Conclusion: CPSCS developed by the Hospital Nurses Association appeared to be valid to discriminate or predict brain injury severity, recovery states, and days of stay in ICU for brain injury patients.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the problem on activities of daily living ; the problem which spinal cord injured patients have when they adapt in daily living ; Subjects were 113 members who used the hospital which is located in Kwangju-city from November 20, 2001 to May 20, 2002. The evaluation of the ADL was performed according to MBI and collected data were statistically analysed by SPSS PC for paired Chi-square test T-test, One way ANOVA and Duncan's post-hoc test. The result's were as follows; 1. Modified Barthel Index average mark was $63.77{\pm}33.60$ points and MBI score distribution according to characteristics of injury is as following. 1) A patient who had long duration of injury, small injury region, incomplete paralysis in paralysis degree, paraplegia in paralysis type got high MBI score as statistical and significantly(p<0.05). 2. Society adaptation state by characteristics of spinal cord injured is an following. 1) After lapse of time of disease, a patient who is injured for a long term present surrounding environmental problem, a patient who is injured for a short term shows psychological problem. In society activity, as lapse of time of disease is long, patient did many hobby activity and same private club, on the other hand as lapse of time of diseases is short, the others appeared high and significantly as statistical(p<0.01). 2) In society activity by injury region, cervical injury and thoracic injury did more hobby activity than lumbar injury and in lumbar injury same private club or religion life appeared higher than thoracic injury of cervical injury significantly as statistical(p<0.01). 3) In walk method by paralysis degree Complete paralysis had more wheelchair life than incomplete paralysis(p<0.01). 4) In serious problem by paralysis type psychological problem in quadriplegia and surrounding environmental problem in paraplegia appeared high and significantly as statistical(p<0.01). 3. In society adaptation state by MBI score difference between variables appeared but it wasn't significantly.
