  • Critically ill trauma patients generally show good nutritional status upon initial hospitalization. However, they have a high risk of malnutrition due to hyper-metabolism during the acute phase. Hence, suitable nutritional support is essential for the optimal recovery of these patients; therefore, outcomes such as preservation of fat-free mass, maintenance of immune functions, reduction in infectious complications, and prevention of malnutrition can be expected. In this report, we present the experience of a patient subjected to 40 days of nutritional interventions during postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) care. Although the patient was no malnutrition at ICU admission, enteral nutrition (EN) was delayed for > 2 weeks because of several postoperative complications. Subsequently, while receiving parenteral nutrition (PN), the patient displayed persistent hypertriglyceridemia. As a result, his prescription of PN were converted to lipid-free PN. On postoperative day (POD) #19, the patient underwent jejunostomy and started standard EN. A week later, the patient was switched to a high-protein, immune-modulating formula for postoperative wound recovery. Thereafter, PN was stopped, while EN was increased. In addition, because of defecation issues, a fiber-containing formula was administered with previous formula alternately. Despite continuous nutritional intervention, the patient experienced a significant weight loss and muscle mass depletion and was diagnosed with severe malnutrition upon discharge from the ICU. To conclude, this case report highlights the importance of nutrition interventions in critically ill trauma patients with an increased risk of malnutrition, indicating the need to promptly secure an appropriate route of feeding access for active nutritional support of patients in the ICU.

  • A phytase with high activity at low temperatures has great potential for feed applications, especially in aquaculture. Therefore, this study used a degenerate PCR and TAIL PCR to clone a phytase gene from Erwinia carotovora var. carotovota, the cause of soft rot of vegetables in the ground or during cold storage. The full-length 2.5-kb fragment included an open reading frame of 1,302 bp and encoded a putative phytase of 45.3 kDa with a 50% amino acid identity to the Klebsiella pneumoniae phytase. The phytase contained the active site RHGXRXP and HD sequence motifs that are typical of histidine acid phosphatases. The enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, and displayed the following characteristics: a high catalytic activity at low temperatures (retaining over 24% activity at $5^{\circ}C$) and remarkably thermal lability (losing >96% activity after incubation at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 min). The optimal phytase activity occurred at pH 5.5 and ${\sim}49^{\circ}C$, and the enzyme activity rapidly decreased above $40^{\circ}C$. When compared with mesophilic counterparts, the phytase not only exhibited a high activity at a low temperature, but also had a low $K_m$ and high $k_{cat}$. These temperature characteristics and kinetic parameters are consistent with low-temperature-active enzymes. To our knowledge, this would appear to be the first report of a low-temperature-active phytase and its heterogeneous expression.

  • Pyrazole, hydroxyimino, aldehyde and isoxazole derivatives exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities. With growing application on their synthesis and bioactivity, chemists and biologists in recent years have considerable attention on the research of these derivatives. In the view of potential importance of these derivatives, we have crystallized few of the derivatives and its report has been published. The present study focuses on docking studies of these derivatives against Phospholipases $A_2$ enzyme. This enzymes has implicated as potential targets for anti-inflammatory drug design. co-crystal structure (PDB ID: 1POE) of $PLA_2$ deposited in Protein Data Bank has been retrieved for docking analysis. Docking studies using Schrodinger's GLIDE reveals that these derivatives shows better binding energy and score in the defined active site. These results may provide a guiding role to design a lead molecule which may reduce inflamation.

  • Glutathione s-transferase in thought to play a key role in initiating the detoxication of potential alkylating agents, including pharmacologically active compounds. It is widely accepted that garlic contained allin which is converted to allicin by allinase. Allicin is easily degraded to diallyl disulfide and other components. This report attempted to observe the effect of diallyl disulfide on some biological activities. It was observed that the activity of serum transaminase was not changed by the treatment of diallyl disulfide. The liver cytosolic glutathione s-transferase was significantly increased. where as the microsomal glutathione s-transferase was not increased.

  • Leukocyte common antigen-related phosphatase (LAR) has been considered a promising target for the development of therapeutics for neurological diseases. Here, we report the first example for a successful application of the structure-based virtual screening to identify the novel small-molecule LAR inhibitors. Five of these inhibitors revealed micromolar inhibitory activities with the associated $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 2 to 6 ${\mu}M$. Because the newly identified inhibitors were also screened for having desirable physicochemical properties as a drug candidate, they may serve as a starting point of the structure-activity relationship study to optimize the medical efficacy. Structural features relevant to the stabilization of the new inhibitors in the active site of LAR are discussed in detail.

  • A brief description on the greenhouse gases, the greenhoue effect, sea level changes, forcing of climate, the history of Earth's changing climate based on the IPCC REPORT and the records of the recent variation of the climate in the Republic of Kore is presented here for help enhancing awareness of the issues. The climate of the Earth has the potential to be changed on all timescales by the fluctuations of the concentrations of radioactively active greenhouse gases, solar radiation, aerosols and albedo. However, the rate of the recent global warming seems to be larger and rapid than any have occurred thorughout recorded history enough to draw the world-wide attention and worry concerned with the theme of environment and development. There are still uncertainties in the predictions relating to the timing, magnitude and the pattern of the climatic change due to the current incomplete understanding of various aspects of the complex processes. Nonetheless, the scientific results avaliable is sufficient to allow for decisive precautionary measures to be taken.

  • Cervical thymic cysts are not very common. Two-thirds of the lesions are detected in the 1st decade of life, when the thymus is biggest in size and most active. The remaining one-third in the 2nd and 3rd decades. Due to its rarity, cervical thymic cyst is seldom included in the differential diagnosis of a neck mass. Approximately 90 cases have been reported thus far, and most of these cases have occurred asymptomatically in children and adults. We report a case of a 44-year old man with a cervical thymic cyst mimicking branchial cleft cyst.

  • We report the spectroscopic properties of column-III nitrifies of GaN, GaInN, and AlGaN. The column-III nitride semiconductors are promising materials to realize the current-injection-type blue-and ultraviolet (UV)-light-emitting devices with high performance. To acheive the lasing with low threshold, the devices are must constructed to double heterostructure by succesive epitaxial growth technique, and we must confine the carriers in the potential barrier and optical confinement in wave guide between barrier and active layers has different refractive index. The refractive index of column-III nitride semiconductors, however, are rarely reported. The measured refractive index was 2.9, and the observed characteristic peak near the enrgy gap was analysed using a dielectric function and may due to excitonic contribution.

  • Concrete is the most generous, universal main structural material. There is active study for processing quality, stable quality mangement. Especially, strength is basic factor of evaluating stability of concrete building. Regaining required strength and homogeneity is very important to get self-stability in building to evaluate another characteristic. Concrete strength is important to the quality management. But, result of hardened concrete's quality test is hardly reflected to works immediately. When required strength is not enough, it could bring out safe problem, economic and administrative cost. It is pointed out that problems from strength evaluation, so early evaluation of concrete quality is required. From the trend that accelerating high quality concrete development, improving the method of quality test and early evaluation measure is urgent project. Throughout this report, it is suggested the method with use of microwave to evaluate 28-days concrete strength.
