In this thesis, a two-dimensional active phased array antenna without phase shifter is studied for two-dimensional beam scanning. A designed two-dimensional oscillator-type active array antenna, radiation elements and the oscillator circuits were combined with via-hole and coupled by slot on the opposite ground plane. The operating characteristics are analyzed and experimentally demonstrated , The two-dimensional $4\times4$ elements were designed for the proper coupling strengths and coupling phases by adjusting the width, length and offset position of slot-lines. The fabricated active phased array antenna shows the beam shift characteristics capable of scanning from $-17^{\circ}$ to $18^{\circ}$ with respect to broadside in one dimension, from $-5^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ in two dimension. The experimental results show that it is possible to use the oscillator-type active phased array antenna as a two-dimensional planar array antenna.

In this paper, we have developed a retrodirective active array operating in the 2 GHz LS band. The retrodirective array has the property of redirecting any electromagnetic wave back to the incoming direction without any priory informations. The system is integrated with phase conjugators and antenna array. Microwave phase conjugators can be implemented by microwave mixers. In this research, 2-port gate mixers using pHEMT and $1{\times}4$ monopole array have been used to achieve the retrodirectivity. The measured results have been compared with the theoretical prediction, and it has been shown that there exists a reasonable agreement between them. The monopole array can be used easily in many areas for simplicity and cost-effective property, and the retrodirective array developed in this research can be applied directly in the base station facilities for the wireless mobile communications. indoor wireless LAN and RFID transponders.
An S-band multifunction chip with a simple interface for an active phased array base station antenna for next-generation mobile communications is designed and fabricated using commercial 0.5-${\mu}m$ GaAs pHEMT technology. To reduce the cost of the module assembly and to reduce the number of chip interfaces for a compact transmit/receive module, a digital serial-to-parallel converter and an active bias circuit are integrated into the designed chip. The chip can be controlled and driven using only five interfaces. With 6-bit phase shifting and 6-bit attenuation, it provides a wideband performance employing a shunt-feedback technique for amplifiers. With a compact size of 16 $mm^2$ ($4mm{\times}4mm$), the proposed chip exhibits a gain of 26 dB, a P1dB of 12 dBm, and a noise figure of 3.5 dB over a wide frequency range of 1.8 GHz to 3.2 GHz.

In this paper, it is proposed the phase shifter array active system to receive digital satellite broadcasting for vehicle. To receive satellite broadcasting data in vehicle, it is inevitable to have active antenna system, which traces the satellite in real time. Also if it is used in vehicle, it must be thin and light structure. To develop this type of antenna system, several techniques should be integrated properly. These are the design and manufacturing technique of high gain antenna, algorithm for tracking satellite and its manufacturing technique, controller design and manufacturing technique, system integration technique and so on. The validity of the proposed AVDBS system was confirmed by simulation and experimental results.
In this paper, an accurate characterization of a fabricated X-band transmit/receive module is described with the process of generating control data to correct amplitude and phase deviations in an active electronically scanned array antenna unit. In the characterization, quantization errors (from both a digitally controlled attenuator and a phase shifter) are considered using not theoretical values (due to discrete sets of amplitude and phase states) but measured values (of which implementation errors are a part). By using the presented procedure for the characterization, each initial control bit of both the attenuator and the phase shifter is closest to the required value for each array element position. In addition, each compensated control bit for the parasitic cross effect between amplitude and phase control is decided using the same procedure. Reduction of the peak sidelobe level of an array antenna is presented as an example to validate the proposed procedure.

In this paper, we have developed a retrodirective active array operating in the 2 GHz LS band. The retrodirective array has the property of re-directing any electromagnetic wave back to the incoming direction without any priory informations. The system is consisted of frequency mixers and antenna array. The mixer is acting as a phase conjugator. In this research, 2-port gate mixers using pHEMT and 1${\times}$4 monopole array have been used. The retrodirective array developed in this research can be applied in the base station facilities for the wireless mobile communications and RFID transponders.
We propose 8.2-GHz band radar RFICs for an 8 × 8 phased-array frequency-modulated continuous-wave receiver developed using 65-nm CMOS technology. This receiver panel is constructed using a multichip solution comprising fabricated 2 × 2 low-noise amplifier phase-shifter (LNA-PS) chips and a 4ch RX front-end chip. The LNA-PS chip has a novel phase-shifter circuit for low-voltage operation, novel active single-to-differential/differential-to-single circuits, and a current-mode combiner to utilize a small area. The LNA-PS chip shows a power gain range of 5 dB to 20 dB per channel with gain control and a single-channel NF of 6.4 dB at maximum gain. The measured result of the chip shows 6-bit phase states with a 0.35° RMS phase error. The input P1 dB of the chip is approximately -27.5 dBm at high gain and is enough to cover the highest input power from the TX-to-RX leakage in the radar system. The gain range of the 4ch RX front-end chip is 9 dB to 30 dB per channel. The LNA-PS chip consumes 82 mA, and the 4ch RX front-end chip consumes 97 mA from a 1.2 V supply voltage. The chip sizes of the 2 × 2 LNA-PS and the 4ch RX front end are 2.39 mm × 1.3 mm and 2.42 mm × 1.62 mm, respectively.

In this paper, a compensation method of the amplitude and phase errors from the T/R(Transmit/Receive) modules in an active SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) system is introduced. The errors are defined and classified, and characterized by analyzing the measurement data acquired from the pilot test. To compensate these errors, a control methodology of T/R modules output is proposed. Before the compensation is applied, 16 T/R modules integrated on the active SAR antenna show the amplitude in 28.2~29.0 dBm and the phase in $101.7^{\circ}{\sim}165.2^{\circ}$. After the compensation, the amplitude and phase are distributed in 27.4~28.0 dBm and $116.1^{\circ}{\sim}120.0^{\circ}$ respectively. The antenna beam patterns generated by the array theory with the distributions are compared, and the proposed method is verified as good to apply for the active SAR system.

This paper reviews the research on silicon based phased array system operating from microwave to millimeter wave frequencies. First, the design of phase shifter using CMOS technology is presented. The passive phase shifter is applied to the transmit/receive module from one to 16 channel in a single chip. The 35 GHz 4-element T/R module consumes less than 200 mW both transmit and receive modes. The architecture can extend to 16-channel operating at 44 GHz, thereby improving transmit power and linearity. The Ku-band 2-antenna 4-element receiver was developed using active phase shifter based on vector sum method. It is important to minimize coupling between beams because the chip contains four independent beams. The method of coupling is presented and verified.

This paper include to study DoA(Direction of Arrival) for radio collection and monitoring system. The direction finding calculated by applying the CVDF (Correlation Vector Direction Finding) algorithm for the five circular dipole antenna over V / UHF band. To improve the accuracy of direction finding by applying CVDF algorithm needs to obtain ideal phase difference each antennas. However, a circular array antenna phase difference pattern may be distorted on a specific frequency band or to particular direction. The effect of installing each array antennas circularly and the effect of the interference of center pole (located in the center of a circular array antenna mount) may make the distortion of phase pattern. If you use an active antenna instead of passive antenna to obtain good sensitivity, you would measure the more distortion. This paper propose how to change combination of antennas to measure the phase in real-time and how to use antenna beam patterns for minimizing the degradation phenomena at applying simple CVDF algorithm and increasing the direction finding capability.
