STACOM will be utilized to control substation voltage in the near future. Although STACOM shows good voltage regulation performance owing to its rapid and continuous response, it needs additional reactive power compensation device to keep control margin for emergency such as fault. ULTC transformer is one of good candidates. This paper presents a Kohonen Neural Network (KNN) based coordination control scheme of ULTC transformer and STACOM. In this paper, the objective function of the coordination control is minimization of both STACOM output and the number of switchings of ULTC transformer while maintaining substation voltage magnitude to the predefined constant value. This coordination, control is performed based on reactive load trend of the substation and KNN which offers optimal tap position in view of STACOM output minimization. The input variables of KNN are active and reactive power of the substation, current tap position, and current STACOM output. The KNN is trained by effective Iterative Condensed Nearest Neighbor (ICNN) rule. This coordination control applied to IEEE 14 bus system and shows satisfactory results.
This paper investigates an economic and highly efficient power converter topology and its modulation scheme for 60kW rapid EV charger system. The target system consists of three-phase three-switch buck-type rectifier topology. A new Carrier Based PWM scheme along with its simple implementation using logic gates is introduced in this paper. This PWM scheme replaces the diode rectifier equivalent switching state with an active switching state producing the effectively same current flowing path. As a result, the distortion of input current during the polarity reversal of capacitor line voltage can be mitigated. The proposed modulation technique is confirmed through simulation verification. The proposed modulation technique and its implementation scheme can expand the operation range of the three-phase three-switch buck-type rectifier having ac input and capacitor ripple current of high quality.

The aim of this research is to develop a new method to use magnetorheological (MR) damper for vibration control. It is a new way to achieve the MR damper response without the need to have detailed constant parameters estimations. The methodology adopted in designing the control structure in this work is based on the experimental results. In order to investigate and understand the behaviour of an MR damper, an experiment is first conducted. Force-displacement and force-velocity responses with varying current have been established to model the MR damper. The force for upward and downward motions of the damper piston is found to be increasing with current and velocity. In cyclic motion, which is the combination of upward and downward motions of the piston, the force with hysteresis behaviour is seen to be increasing with current. In addition, the energy dissipated is also found to be linear with current. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, based on the established characteristics for a quarter car suspension model, has been adapted in this study. A fuzzy rule based PID controller (F-PID) is opted to achieve better response for a varying frequency input. The outcome of this study can be used in the modelling of MR damper and applied to control engineering. Moreover, the identified behaviour can help in further development of the MR damper technology.
In this paper, we designed Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) for large scale Superconductor Flywheel Energy Storage System (SFESS) and PD controller for AMB. And we experimentally evaluated SFESS including hybrid type AMB. The radial AMB was designed to provide force slew rate that was sufficient for the unbalance disturbances at the maximum operating speed. The thrust AMB is a hybrid type where a permanent magnet carries the weight of the flywheel and an electromagnetic actuator generates the dynamic control force. We evaluated the design performance of the manufactured AMB through comparison of FEM analysis and the results of experimental force measurement. In order to obtain gains of PD controller and design a notch filter, the system identification was performed through measuring frequency response including dynamics for the AMBs, a power amp and a sensor using a sine swept test method after levitating the flywheel. Through measuring the current input of the AMBs and the orbit of a flywheel according to rotational speed, we verified excellent control performance of the AMBs with small amount current for the large scale SFESS.
A frictionless positioning device using cone-shaped active magnetic bearings(AMBs) is developed, which is driven by a brushless DC motor equipped with resolver. The cone-shaped AMB feature that the structure is simple and yet the five d.o.f. rotor motion is controlled by four magnet pairs. A linearized dynamic model, which accounts for the relationship between input voltage and output current in the cone-shaped magnet, is developed and the azimuth motion of the frictionless positioning device is modeled as the second order system. The feedback controller is designed by using linear quadratic regulator with integral action optimal control law so that the cone-shaped AMB system is stabilized and the frictionless positioning device gets the zero steady state. It is observed that the linearized dynamic model is adequate and the frictionless positioning device can achieve the tracking accuracy within the sensor resolution.
Advances in sensors, actuators, and computers and developments In information systems offer unprecedented opportunities to implement highly ambitious automation, control and decision strategies. There are also new challenges and demands for control and automation in modern industrial practices. There is a growing need for an active participation from the information systems in industrial, manufacturing and process industry environments because currently there are many control problems. This paper provides pattern recognition to the monitoring system for solvent manufacturing process and shows performance in real-time response with multiple input signals. Data is teamed by a multilayer feedforward network trained by error-backpropagation. The two kinds of test results show that the trained network has the ability to show the current system status with different input data sets.
In this paper, direct power control system for three-phase PWM AC/DC converter without the source voltage sensors is proposed. The sinusoidal input current and unity effective power factor are realised based on the estimated flux in the observer. Both active and reactive power calculated using estimated flux. The estimation of flux is performed based on the Reduced-order flux observer using the actual currents and the command control voltage. The source voltage sensors are replaced by a flux estimator. The active and reactive powers estimation are performed based on the estimated flux and Phase anble. The proposed algorithm is verified through simulation and experiment.
In this paper, a modified sensitivity control for the semi-active suspension system with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper is investigated. A 2-d.o.f quarter-car model together with a 6th order polynomial model for the MR damper is considered. For the purpose of suppressing the vertical acceleration of the sprung mass, the square of the vertical acceleration is defined as a cost function and a modified sensitivity control that updates the current input in the negative gradient of the cost function is proposed. The implementation of the proposed algorithm requires only the measurement of the relative displacement of the suspension deflection. The local stability of equilibria of the closed loop nonlinear system is proved by investigating the eigenvalues of the linearized ones. Through simulations, the passive suspension, the skyhook control, and the proposed modified sensitivity control are compared.

This paper investigates the stability and performance of model predictive controlled active-front-end (AFE) rectifiers for energy storage systems, which has been increasingly applied in power distribution sectors and in renewable energy sources to ensure an uninterruptable power supply. The model predictive control (MPC) algorithm utilizes the discrete behavior of power converters to determine appropriate switching states by defining a cost function. The stability of the MPC algorithm is analyzed with the discrete z-domain response and the nonlinear simulation model. The results confirms that the control method of the active-front-end (AFE) rectifier is stable, and that is operates with an infinite gain margin and a very fast dynamic response. Moreover, the performance of the MPC controlled AFE rectifier is verified with a 3.0 kW experimental system. This shows that the MPC controlled AFE rectifier operates with a unity power factor, an acceptable THD (4.0 %) level for the input current and a very low DC voltage ripple. Finally, an efficiency comparison is performed between the MPC and the VOC-based PWM controllers for AFE rectifiers. This comparison demonstrates the effectiveness of the MPC controller.
