Metallic shape memory alloys present fascinating physical properties such as their super-elastic behavior in austenite phase, which can be exploited for providing a structure with both a self-centering capability and an increased ductility. More or less accurate numerical models have been introduced to model their behavior along the last 25 years. This is the reason for which the literature is rich of suggestions/proposals on how to implement this material in devices for passive and semi-active control. Nevertheless, the thermo-mechanical coupling characterizing the first-order martensite phase transformation process results in several macroscopic features affecting the alloy performance. In particular, the effects of day-night and winter-summer temperature excursions require special attention. This aspect might imply that the deployment of some devices should be restricted to indoor solutions. A further aspect is the dependence of the behavior from the geometry one adopts. Two fundamental lacks of symmetry should also be carefully considered when implementing a SMA-based application: the behavior in tension is different from that in compression, and the heating is easy and fast whereas the cooling is not. This manuscript focuses on the passive devices recently proposed in the literature for civil engineering applications. Based on the challenges above identified, their actual feasibility is investigated in detail and their long term performance is discussed with reference to their fatigue life. A few available semi-active solutions are also considered.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the shape control of plates via embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. An extensive body of literature proposes the use of SMA wires to actively modify the shape or stiffness of a structure; in most cases, however, the study focuses on modeling and little experimental data is available. In this work, a simple proof of concept specimen was built by attaching four prestrained SMA wires to one side of a carbon fiber laminate plate strip. The specimen was clamped at one end and tested in an environmental chamber, measuring the tip displacement and the SMA temperature. At heating, actuation of the SMA wires bends the plate; at cooling deformation is partially recovered. The specimen was actuated a few times between two fixed temperatures $T_c$ and $T_h$, whereas in the last actuation a temperature $T_f$ > $T_h$ was reached. Contrary to most model predictions, in the first actuation the transformation temperatures are significantly higher than in the following cycles, which are stable. Moreover, if the temperature $T_h$ is exceeded, two separate actuations occur during heating: the first follows the path of the stable cycles; the second, starting at $T_h$, is similar to the first cycle. An interpretation of the phenomenon is given using some differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The observed behavior emphasizes the need to build a more comprehensive constitutive model able to include these effects.
Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been installed in many high-rise buildings, to improve their resiliency under dynamic loads. However, high-rise buildings may experience natural frequency changes under ambient temperature fluctuations, extreme wind loads and relative humidity variations. This makes the design of a TMD challenging and may lead to a detuned scenario, which can reduce significantly the performance. To alleviate this problem, the current paper presents a proposed approach for the design of a robust and efficient TMD. The approach accounts for the uncertain natural frequency, the optimization objective and the input excitation. The study shows that robust design parameters can be different from the optimal parameters. Nevertheless, predetermined optimal parameters are useful to attain design robustness. A case study of a high-rise building is executed. The TMD designed with the proposed approach showed its robustness and effectiveness in reducing the responses of high-rise buildings under multidirectional wind. The case study represents an engineered design that is instructive. The results show that shear buildings may be controlled with less effort than cantilever buildings. Structural control performance in high-rise buildings may depend on the shape of the building, hence the flow patterns, as well as the wind direction angle. To further increase the performance of the robust TMD in one lateral direction, active control using LQG and fuzzy logic controllers was carried out. The performance of the controllers is remarkable in enhancing the response reduction. In addition, the fuzzy logic controller may be more robust than the LQG controller.
Vibrational problems in the domestic Small Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (SHAWT) are due to flap wise vibrations caused by varying wind velocities acting perpendicular to its blade surface. It has been reported that monitoring the structural health of the turbine blades requires special attention as they are key elements of a wind power generation, and account for 15-20% of the total turbine cost. If this vibration problem is taken care, the SHAWT can be made as commercial success. In this work, Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires made of Nitinol (Ni-Ti) alloys are embedded into the Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) wind turbine blade in order to reduce the flapwise vibrations. Experimental study of Nitinol (Ni-Ti) wire characteristics has been done and relationship between different parameters like current, displacement, time and temperature has been established. When the wind turbine blades are subjected to varying wind velocity, flapwise vibration occurs which has to be controlled continuously, otherwise the blade will be damaged due to the resonance. Therefore, in order to control these flapwise vibrations actively, a non-linear current controller unit was developed and fabricated, which provides actuation force required for active vibration control in smart blade. Experimental analysis was performed on conventional GFRP and smart blade, depicted a 20% increase in natural frequency and 20% reduction in amplitude of vibration. With addition of active vibration control unit, the smart blade showed 61% reduction in amplitude of vibration.
Ondol heating, a kind of radiant floor heating, is a main method used in housing units in Korea. Building energy simulation including ondol and relevant facilities has not been performed due to its complexity. For evaluating energy consumption and indoor temperature variation, a new method should be proposed. At the present work, a dynamic simulation on ondol heating was tried by combining TRNSYS and EES. Characteristic functions for a pump, hot water coils and a gas boiler were simultaneously solved by EES, and calculated flow rates and supply temperature of hot water were provided as inputs of the active layer of TYPE 56 in TRNSYS. The results by the simulation on a typical housing unit in Korea shows a good trend in a viewpoint of actual behavior of ondol heating.
New active "intelligent" structural systems with integrated self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities can lead to a new design dimension for the next generation high-performance structures and mechanical systems. However, temperature effects to the piezoelectric transducers are not fully understood. This paper is concerned with a mathematical modeling and analysis of a laminated piezothermoelastic cylindrical shell composite exposed to mechanical, electric, and thermal fields. Generic shell equations and solution procedures are derived. Contributions of spatial and time components in the mechanical, electric, and temperature excitations are discussed, and their analytical solutions derived. A laminated cylindrical shell composite with fully distributed piezoelectric layers is used in a case study; its multi-field step and impulse responses are investigated. Analyses suggest that the fully distributed actuators are insensitive to even modes due to load averaging and cancellation. Accordingly, these even modes are filtered from the total response and only the modes that are combinations of m = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ and n = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ participating in dynamic response of the shell.
There are the stirring test and drain test in the daily performance test to determine the thermal performance of a domestic solar hot water system. The drain test is a test that measures the discharge heating rate while drain the hot water from the top of the storage tank and supply the city water to the bottom of the tank. From the perspective of the user, this drain test is more effective than the stirring test. In this study, the thermal performance were compared through the drain test for a passive type and an active type domestic solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors. At this point, a passive type was used the horizontal storage tanks, and an active type was used vertical storage tank. In the drain test, when the hot water drained up to the reference hot water temperature, an active type which have vertical storage tank represents excellent daily performance than a passive type which have horizontal storage tank regardless of weather conditions. The reason for this is because the vertical storage tank is advantageous to thermal stratification in the tank. After the drain test, the residual heat for the horizontal storage tank was much more than the vertical storage tank, but in the next day the amount of discharged heat were less than the those of vertical storage tank neither. Thus, the solar water heating system which have horizontal storage tank should be adopted preheating control method rather than separate using control method when connected with auxiliary heat source device.

Boundary element method was used to solve heat conduction problem for predicting temperature distribution in grain storage bin. Temperature of grain in storage is one of the three main abiotic factors, besides the intergranular gas composition and the grain moisture content, that determine the keeping quality and control measures used to protect grain from insects and damaging microflora. Collecting the temperature data at various points in the storage bins at different time of the day over a period of time is one way of finding the temperature distribution, this method requires a lot of time, cost and labour and less efficient. However data so collected serve useful purpose of being used to validate predicted temperature distribution using mathematical models. Mathematical models based on physical principles can potentially predict with accuracy the temperature distribution in a grain storage bin. Using the boundary element model the effect of bin wall material, ambient emperature, bin size etc. on temperature distribution can be studied. A knowledge of temperature distribution in stored grain not only helps in identifying active deterioration , but also gives an indication of potential for detection.
Clutch torque control is the key to the ride comfort improvement of a vehicle equipped with AMT (automated manual transmission). For such control, the torque transfer starting point, known as the "kiss point," should be indicated or at least estimated to compensate for the clutch torque. The kiss point changes due to wear, high temperature, and fatigue; as such, it should be estimated while the vehicle is being driven. In this study, the method of kiss point active estimation for an AMT vehicle with a dry-type clutch was devised. The kiss point is learned while the engine is in an idle state and while the transmission is at a neutral gear position. It is determined when the input shaft of the transmission starts to rotate by slowly engaging the clutch. The noise of the shaft speed signal during the slow engagement process is filtered for accurate control. The kiss point estimation at various clutch engagement speeds was analyzed via a vehicle test.

A 70 MHz temperature-compensated on-chip CMOS relaxation oscillator for mobile display driver ICs is proposed to reduce frequency variations. The proposed oscillator compensates for frequency variation with respect to temperature by adjusting the bias currents to control the change in delay of comparators with temperature. A bandgap reference (BGR) is used to stabilize the bias currents with respect to temperature and supply voltages. Additional temperature compensation for the generated frequency is achieved by optimizing the resistance in the BGR after measuring the output frequency. In addition, a trimming circuit is implemented to reduce frequency variation with respect to process. The proposed relaxation oscillator is fabricated using 45 nm CMOS technology and occupies an active area of $0.15mm^2$. The measured frequency variations with respect to temperature and supply voltages are as follows: (i) ${\pm}0.23%$ for changes in temperature from -30 to $75^{\circ}C$, (ii) ${\pm}0.14%$ for changes in $V_{DD1}$ from 2.2 to 2.8 V, and (iii) ${\pm}1.88%$ for changes in $V_{DD2}$ from 1.05 to 1.15 V.
