Using computational modeling, we design a pair of biomimetic microcapsules that exploit chemical mechanisms to communicate and alter their local environment. As a result, these synthetic objects can undergo autonomous, directed motion. In the simulations, signaling microcapsules release "agonist" particles, while target microcapsules release "antagonist" particles and the permeabilities of both capsule types depend on the local particle concentration in the surrounding solution. Additionally, the released nanoscopic particles can bind to the underlying substrate and thereby create adhesion gradients that propel the microcapsules to move. Hydrodynamic interactions and the feedback mechanism provided by the dissolved particles are both necessary to achieve the cooperative behavior exhibited by these microcapsules. Our model provides a platform for integrating both the spatial and temporal behavior of assemblies of "artificial cells", and allows us to design a rich variety of structures capable of exhibiting complex dynamics. Due to the cell-like attributes of polymeric microcapsules and polymersomes, material systems are available for realizing our predictions.
In order to develop an intelligent delivery system for cosmetic active agents (e.g., arbutin, ascorbic acid, and adenosine), pH-responsive P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles having an average size of approx. $2{\mu}m$ and spherical shape were synthesized via dispersion photopolymerization. There was a drastic change in the swelling ratio of P (MAA-co-PEGMA) hydro gels at a pH 5, which is the $pK_a$ of the hydrogel. To determine the factors that have an effect on the loading of cosmetic active agents into the hydrogel, the loading efficiency of the active agents was investigated at various MAA and EG compositions of the hydrogel and the loading pH conditions. When the MAA contents in the hydrogel decreased, the loading efficiency of the active agents increased. In loading experiments with different pH conditions, the active agents showed higher loading efficiency into the hydrogel at the pH where the hydrogel was at the swollen state than at the pH where the electrostatic repulsion was minimized.
The particle which has two different characteristics on both sides is called Janus particle which is emerging as a key material in microscale transport systems. For example, if one hemisphere has polarity and the other does not, then nonpolar sides would attract each other so that a complex cluster is formed. Thus, this fascinating material can be used as an element of twisting ball panel display, complex micro-scale clusters, drug delivery unit, and active detecting beads. The keywords in developing Janus particle are size and uniformity. Former researches solved uniformity but downsizing still remains a problem. There are three methods to generate small size particles in microchannels: co-flowing, cross-flowing, and elongational flows. In this research, we generate Janus particles smaller than 10-${\mu}$m in diameter using elongational flow in microchannels. And we use UV initiator with Hydrogen UV source to solidify micro size particles. One hemisphere of the particle is coated with rhodamin for visualization.
The phagocytic activity of murine peritoneal macrophages was determined by lucigenin chemiluminescence with luminometer and engulfment of fluorescein-conjugated E. coli particles. 70% MeOH extract of Lithospermi Radix was fractionated successively with hexane, methylene chloride, n-BuOH and water. The water fraction (m.w. 500 to 1,000) enhanced the lucigenin chemiluminescence and the engulfment of fluorescein-conjugated E. coli particles in murine peritoneal macrophages. The water fraction suppressed the production of nitric oxide in the macrophages. These results suggest that an active fraction of phagocytosis in Lithos-permi Radix is the water fraction and the molecular weight is 500 to 1,000.
The milling and particulate characteristics of Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures for a reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) process were studied. A commercially available prealloyed Al powder with Zn, Mg, Cu and Cr alloying elements (7475 series) was mixed with a calcined sinter-active $Al_2O_3$ powder and then milled in centrifugal milling equipment for ~48 hrs. The Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures after milling were characterized and evaluated in various ways to reveal their particulate characteristics during milling. The milling efficiency of the Al alloy increased with a longer milling time. Comminution of the Al alloy particles started with its elongation, showing a high aspect ratio. With a longer milling time, the elongated Al alloy particle changed in terms of its shape and size, becoming equiaxially fine particles. Regardless of the milling efficiency of the Al alloy particles, all of the Al alloy particles repeatedly experienced strong plastic deformation during milling, giving rise to higher density of surface defects, such as microcracks, and leading to higher residual microstress within the Al alloy particles. The chemical reactions, oxidation behavior and hydration behavior of the Al alloy particles and the hydrolysis characteristics of their reaction with the environment were also observed during the milling process and during the subsequent powder handling steps.
Silver nanoparticles coated with silica can be obtained by the reduction of $AgNO_3$ with hydrazine in the presence of NaOH-stabilized, active silicic acid (polysilicic acid). The size of the silver nanoparticles and the silica shell thicknesses were affected by varying the hydrazine content, the active silicic acid content and the experimental method (e.g. hydrothermal method). Typically, silver nanoparticles sized around 40 nm were aggregated, connected by silica. The presence of peaks centered around 400 nm in UV-vis spectra corresponds to the surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles. The size of the aggregated silver nanoparticles increased with increasing hydrazine concentration. Under hydrothermal conditions at $150^{\circ}C$ the formation of individual silica particles was observed and the sizes of the silver nanoparticles were reduced. The hydrothermal treatment of silver nanoparticles at $180^{\circ}C$ gives a well-defined Ag@$SiO_2$ core-shell in aggregated silica sol particles. The absorption band observed at around 412 nm were red-shifted with respect to the uncoated silver nanoparticles (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 399 nm) due to the larger refractive index of silica compared to that of water. The formation of silver nanoparticles coated with silica is confirmed by UV-visible absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) data.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the chemicals used in monomer epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method is precise for identifying biological materials and chemicals at considerably low concentrations. In the present article, the substrates coated with gold nanoparticles have been studied to identify BPA and control the diseases caused by this chemical. Gold nanoparticles were made by a simple chemical method and by applying gold salt and trisodium citrate dihydrate reductant and were coated on glass substrates by a spin-coat approach. Finally, using these SERS substrates as plasmonic sensors and Raman spectroscopy, the Raman signal enhancement of molecular vibrations of BPA was investigated. Then, the molecular vibrations of BPA in some consumer goods were identified by applying SERS substrates as plasmonic sensors and Raman spectroscopy. The fabricated gold nanoparticles are spherical and quasi-spherical nanoparticles that confirm the formation of gold nanoparticles by observing the plasmon resonance peak at 517 nm. Active SERS substrates have been coated with nanoparticles, which improve the Raman signal. The enhancement of the Raman signal is due to the resonance of the surface plasmons of the nanoparticles. Active SERS substrates, gold nanoparticles deposited on a glass substrate, were fabricated for the detection of BPA; a detection limit of 10-9 M and a relative standard deviation (RSD) equal to 4.17% were obtained for ten repeated measurements in the concentration of 10-9 M. Hence, the Raman results indicate that the active SERS substrates, gold nanoparticles for the detection of BPA along with the developed methods, show promising results for SERS-based studies and can lead to the development of microsensors. In Raman spectroscopy, SERS active substrate coated with gold nanoparticles are of interest, which is larger than gold particles due to the resonance of the surface plasmons of gold nanoparticles and the scattering of light from gold particles since the Raman signal amplifies the molecular vibrations of BPA. By decreasing the concentration of BPA deposited on the active SERS substrates, the Raman signal is also weakened due to the reduction of molecular vibrations. By increasing the surface roughness of the active SERS substrates, the Raman signal can be enhanced due to increased light scattering from rough centers, which are the same as the larger particles created throughout the deposition by the spin-coat method, and as a result, they enhance the signal by increasing the scattering of light. Then, the molecular vibrations of BPA were identified in some consumer goods by SERS substrates as plasmonic sensors and Raman spectroscopy.
For natural human-robot interaction, we need to know location and shape of facial feature in real environment. In order to track facial feature robustly, we can use the method combining particle filter and active appearance model. However, processing speed of this method is too slow. In this paper, we propose two ideas to improve efficiency of this method. The first idea is changing the number of particles situationally. And the second idea is switching the prediction model situationally. Experimental results is presented to show that the proposed method is about three times faster than the method combining particle filter and active appearance model, whereas the performance of the proposed method is maintained.

Optically active nanostructures such as subwavelength moth-eye antireflective structures or surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active structures have been demonstrated to provide the effective suppression of unwanted reflections as in subwavelength structure (SWS) or effective enhancement of selective signals as in SERS. While various nanopatterning techniques such as photolithography, electron-beam lithography, wafer level nanoimprinting lithography, and interference lithography can be employed to fabricate these nanostructures, roll-to-roll (R2R) nanoimprinting is gaining interests due to its low cost, continuous, and scalable process. R2R nanoimprinting requires a master to produce a stamp that can be wrapped around a quartz roller for repeated nanoimprinting process. Among many possibilities, two different types of mask can be employed to fabricate optically active nanostructures. One is self-assembled Au nanoparticles on Si substrate by depositing Au film with sputtering followed by annealing process. The other is monolayer silica particles dissolved in ethanol spread on the wafer by spin-coating method. The process is optimized by considering the density of Au and silica nano particles, depth and shape of the patterns. The depth of the pattern can be controlled with dry etch process using reactive ion etching (RIE) with the mixture of SF6 and CHF3. The resultant nanostructures are characterized for their reflectance using UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer (Agilent technology, Cary 5000) and for surface morphology using scanning electron microscope (SEM, JEOL JSM-7100F). Once optimized, these optically active nanostructures can be used to replicate with roll-to-roll process or soft lithography for various applications including displays, solar cells, and biosensors.

Poly Si TFTs (poly silicon thin film transistors) with p channel those are annealed HT (high temperature) with gate poly crystalline silicon and LT (low temperature) with metal gate electrode were fabricated on quartz substrate using the analyzed data and compared according to the activated grade silicon thin films and the size of device channel. The electrical characteristics of HT poly-Si TFTs increased those are the on current, electron mobility and decrease threshold voltage by the quality of particles of active thin films annealed at high temperature. But the on/off current ratio reduced by increase of the off current depend on the hot carrier applied to high gate voltage. Even though the size of the particles annealed at low temperature are bigger than HT poly-Si TFTs due to defect in the activated grade poly crystal silicon and the grain boundary, the characteristics of LT poly-Si TFTs were investigated deterioration phenomena those are decrease the electric off current, electron mobility and increase threshold voltage. The results of transconductance show that slope depend on the quality of particles and the amplitude depend on the size of the active silicon particles.
